World's Oldest Republic Is Born (301)

San Marino is one of the world's smallest republics and claims to be Europe's oldest existing state. According to tradition, its founder, Marino, a Christian stonecutter from Dalmatia, took refuge on Mt. Titano in the Apennines to escape religious persecution and built a church there. By the mid-5th century, a community was formed, and, in 1631, its independence was recognized by the papacy

Google, Inc. Founded (1998)

Google was created in the 1990s by two Stanford students who hypothesized that a search engine would produce better results if it analyzed the relationships between websites and prioritized those sites with the largest number of links to them. The search engine's use has become so widespread since it was introduced that the verb "google" was recently added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

V-2 Rocket Hits London (1944)

Developed by Germany during WWII, the Vergeltungswaffe 2 (V-2) rocket was the world's first modern ballistic missile and the first artificial object to achieve suborbital spaceflight. Traveling at supersonic speeds, V-2s were able to reach their targets in silence. More than 3,000 of these rockets were launched on Allied targets during the war, killing about 7,000 civilians and military personnel. Another 20,000 slave laborers died producing the weapons.

Two Plus Four Agreement Signed in Moscow (1990)
The Two Plus Four Agreement, also known as the Treaty on the Final Settlement With Respect to Germany, was the final peace treaty negotiated between the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and the four powers that occupied Germany at the end of World War II: France, the UK, the US, and the Soviet Union. The treaty paved the way for the German reunification, which took place on October 3 of that year

On this day in 1978, boxer Muhammad Ali defeats Leon Spinks at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans to win the world heavyweight boxing title for the third time in his career, the first fighter ever to do so. Following his victory, Ali retired from boxing, only to make a brief comeback two years later. Treaty of Fredrikshamn Signed (1809)

Sweden's loss in the Finnish War marked the end of its significance as a monarchical military power in the region and the beginning of constitutional reform there. As part of the terms of the ensuing treaty, the Swedish government was forced to cede about one-third of its easternmost territory to Russia. The territories in question were declared semi-autonomous, but Russian influence continued to be felt there for many years

Columbia Broadcasting System Goes on the Air (1927)

CBS was one of the three major broadcasting networks to dominate radio and television in the US before the advent of cable TV in the 1990s. CBS began broadcasting in 1927, with station affiliates scattered throughout the US. Its first television broadcasts in 1939 were largely experimental, but as television came to the forefront of American entertainment, CBS began to dominate television as it once had radio.

Churchill Proposes Creation of Council of Europe (1946)

Speaking at the University of Zurich, Winston Churchill implored European states to establish a "United States of Europe" to settle regional differences and promote understanding in the wake of World War II. His speech helped prompt the creation of the Council of Europe in 1949. Open to all European nations that accept the rule of law and guarantee human rights and freedoms to their citizens, the Council today is comprised of 47 member states

King triumphs in Battle of Sexes

On this day in 1973, in a highly publicized "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, top women's player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men's player. Riggs (1918-1995), a self-proclaimed male chauvinist, had boasted that women were inferior, that they couldn't handle the pressure of the game and that even at his age he could beat any female player. The match was a huge media event, witnessed in person by over 30,000 spectators at the Houston Astrodome and by another 50 million TV viewers worldwide. King made a Cleopatra-style entrance on a gold litter carried by men dressed as ancient slaves, while Riggs arrived in a rickshaw pulled by female models. Legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell called the match, in which King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. King's achievement not only helped legitimize women's professional tennis and female athletes, but it was seen as a victory for women's rights in general.

Empress Dowager Cixi Ends Hundred Days of Reform in China (1898)

The de facto ruler of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, Cixi ruled China for much of the period between 1861 and 1908. Following the death of Emperor Xianfeng, as well as that of his only heir, Empress Dowager Cixi violated normal succession order and named her nephew, 3-year-old Guangxu, to the throne. In 1898, after Guangxu attempted to institute political reforms against her wishes, Cixi staged a coup and effectively took political control.

Revolution in Texas (1835)

The Texas Revolution was a war fought between Mexico and the Tejas, or Texas, portion of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Much of the Mexican population, including the American settlers in Texas, revolted after President Santa Anna abolished the Constitution of 1824, which had established Mexico as a federal republic, and proclaimed a new anti-federalist constitution in its place.
