Arthur C. Clarke now joins Isaac Asimov in the stars of our memories. My early years were very much shaped by both of those great men. They towered over SF in a way that is now unimaginable. I love the fact that they knew in a way that they were rivals but also knew that they were colleagues and they were, of course, the greatest of friends.

Both those great men were also the nicest, kindest and most generous people it is possible to imagine.

May not just their books and memory linger on but also their philosophy on life, the world and everything.

I owe an awful lot to both.

When this thread was created, I took the responsibility to place it Stickie'd to the top of the forum. In the message to Setimods stated that I would monitor and remove the sticky at the end of a week. It has been longer than a week and now it will now fade into the pages of history.

Somehow this is Sad, it places an arbitrary value on life or ones lifes work.

I guess the Important part is Many of "Us" here at Seti recognize what Sir Arthur Clarke did for many of "Us" and Seti.

Rest In Peace

Very Respectfully

Al

Pappa,
I think we should try to compile a page here on the SETI@home website dedicated to the memory of Arthur C Clarke. I'm sure if we have the page made with some good content about Arthur C Clarke with links and pictures, then David Anderson won't mind adding the page here on the website.

It is the least we can do and it would be a fitting tribute to his contribution to SETI@home and the search for other life in the universe.

That is a good idea, a page in the form of a "Seti Users Dedication to the Memory of Sir Arthur Clarke."

As You have found the bulk of the graphics and links, If you would like to compile it we can make arrangements to get it to Seti. Any others that would like to help are welcome.

To get it approved any graphics that are used would need to be identified as to the Author/Owner and location they came from. That is just a list of credits.

Regards

Al

Pappa,
I would suggest that we do a page that is similar to Eric Korpela's or Dr. Kevin Douglas's pages on this website. These pages are just html pages and i can make them up as test pages so we can see what the page looks like before we submit it to David Anderson.

Once we are happy with the page, then we submit it and ask for it to be linked to the "About SETI@home" page here; http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_about.php

I will use the stuff already posted here in this message and i will try find some more stuff.

If anyone has anything they want to submit for the Arthur C Clarke tribute page, please post it in this message.

Johnney

Thank You, Actually as I spoke with Eric about some Seti Beta issues, and mentioned this Eric like the idea (he looked). So a flat html file is fine along with the graphics.

As it is ready let me know... I can also place them on my web site for live testing. Then the packaged zip file will make it to Eric.

The only thing left I have to say is that for the most part this has been confined to the Cafe. If you would take time to make a post to the NC forum and see what others might like to say so that they are aware. That is fine with me.

In this repsect I will resticky this thread... For another week.

Regards

Al

Arthur C Clarke test page 1; http://www.boincteams.com/testpages/arthur_c_clarke1.php

The SETI@home user bar links on the top and bottom of the page will not work properly because this is just a test page!

What would you like to see on this page?. Images, quotes by Arthur, user submitted quotes, Something about his life, Something about his contribution to SETI@home? What would you like to see added to this page?

Arthur C. Clark was one of my favorite Authors. I especially remember one of his books of short stories, "Tales of The White Hart". Truly one of the great authors.

A great loss to science and fiction. His writing bought the two together in an exciting and accessible way..even now I use his short stories in my classes to help illustrate principles from physics to my students. I hope I can ignite their enthusiasm for the subject in the way his writing helped ignite my own.

We have lost a true visionary, and I enjoy a lot of his books. But probably what impressed me the most was his publication in Wireless World, February 1945, was his proposal for Geostationary Satellite Communications.

Johnney

I have looked and like the opening graphic, something needs to be below that.

This is tough, I am not a writer however some could properly frame an opening statement.

For example:

Sir Arthur C. Clarke was one of the visionaries of our time. Through the vehicle of his research, time spent actively exciting the imagination of many people through his novels, stories and what was seen on the Big Screen. That vision is evidenced in a portion of the users here at Seti and many other BOINC Projects. Because of his belief in the chance that Seti could find that we are not alone in the universe. Sir Arthur C Clarke was chosen to represent Seti. His signing for information released from Seti to the public and other communications with other groups have provided a means that the lack of government/corporate funding should not kill a very important project. He inspired "us" as a single user here, that "we" together can make a difference.

Collectively, we have have read his books and many remember the first really visual look at the future 2001: a Space Odyssey. To an extent it set the bar for what the public expected as a viewed reality for movies and television with respect to Space and interaction with aliens.

He has touched our lives in a positive manor, we will miss that inspiration and help.

Our Greatest Respect
Seti Users

Then build from there. A page of user comments/quotes a page of references to various other material.

Al

Pappa,
I have a new updated test page with some good stuff on it.

Arthur C Clarke test page 2; http://www.boincteams.com/testpages/arthur_c_clarke2.php

I am having some issues with my html on the page so the formatting might look a bit strange. I'm still learning this html stuff. I will fix this tomorrow or when i get time.

If anyone would like to add something to the page or alter the comments, please post it in this message.

I have done a spell check but if you spot my bad spelling anywhere, do say so.
John.

{EDIT} I just checked, the html formatting issue is only if you are using Internet explorer to view the test page. If your using FireFox, the formatting looks OK. Fix this tomorrow.

Looks good to me and I appreciate your work. I presume other bodies know about this and could be persuaded to make links in return? The Foundation, for example. Forgive if I'm merely stating the obvious.

Somehow when it is published, there is someone that will make it known.

Edit:
Actually, for those that are interested you can go look at Arthur C Clarke Foundation
