What about the OP to which you're giving out advice? Does your 2 hardware and 2 software firewalls protect them if they disable their UAC?

Point taken. My comment wasn't to downplay your statement, but it appears I took it out of context.

Hey, no problem. Just trying to be conscientious of the advice given. All input is valued.

I assume that for Boinc to be authorized/approved by MS would involve paying them a fee to do so?

I don't know for certain. I haven't looked into it myself. I assume one of the BOINC developers must have by now (or are in the process of researching exactly that) since BOINC v6 is supposed to have MS approval.

Ahh....if so, that might solve a lot of these issues.

I, and a lot of other Vista users hope so. I know of three Vista users on my account that want their screen saver back, but I've opted for the service install so they don't forget to let SETI run at startup. BOINC 6 cannot come soon enough (but I don't want them to rush it out the door and have lots of bugs).

All ya gotta do is install boinc in the root directory (like "C"). If it is installed in "c\\program files\\boinc, then UAC becomes a issue. I tried installing it using the default directory and had problems. As soon as I installed it into the Root directory the problem went away and BOINC starts automaticly. I have it installed in "c\\boinc. no problems

I wonder if anyone could tell me how to set up VISTA so it will allow BOINC to start automatically whenever the computer restarts after updating. Currently it will not allow BOINC to open/run after each restart, unless I do it manually.

Thanks,

Nick

Actually, the root is also protected to some extent. However, installing in c:\\BOINC\\ will work quite nicely, and not clutter your root folder too badly.

i just installed boinc on my gf's c2d laptop, "with her permission", she runs vista home premium,, installed it as a service, told it to run only when plugged in and to only use at most 50% of her cpu(S). runs like a charm.

Hi,
if I want to install BOINC in C:/BOINC as a System Service what do I do with the current folders/files in C:/Programme Files? Copy them to the new folder or Delete them?

I'd wait until v6 fixes the Vista blocking issue but my wife and daughter usually forget to turn BOINC on when they start up the pc!

Thanks,
Kieron.

  • Stop BOINC
  • If you're already running the latest version of BOINC, uninstall it.
  • MOVE the BOINC folder to C:\\BOINC (no need to copy except for backup)
  • Install the latest version, selecting service and location for files.
  • That's it! You should be running.

I tried installing Boinc as a service on Vista and it is asking for the Administrator password. Now the thing is, my main & only account is the Administrator account (sloppy practice I know) but I have never set a password up on it. If I leave the password box blank in Boinc it errors saying the field must be completed.

Anyone any ideas?

You have to set a password for the installation to work, but you don't need to keep it after that.

Since mine are home machines and no-one else has access to them, I've used a trick which is very much frowned-upon: I've set a password, but then stored the password in the registry and told the machines to log themselves on automatically. The old trick from Win 2K and XP still works in Vista, but I didn't set it up here - I set it up when the machine was first delivered, running XP, and it inherited the setting when I did the in-place upgrade. (Note for Shirley, if he's watching: works for both Home and Pro flavours). Details available on request.

I long ago set all my Windows OS's to auto logon........
Yeah, it may be considered a security risk, but with everything OCd, and the occaisional mystery reboot is a given, I don't want one of my rigs to sit at a logon screen for hours while I am away at work.........

Besides....the kitties have my permission to cruise the net for kibble anytime they want to....LOL.

With a service install, it wouldn't actually matter if it was sitting at a logon screen - might even crunch quicker, since fewer (no!) user processes would be running. Just saves wear and tear on the fingers if you want to see what's going on on the local desktop.

Thanks Richard, much appreciated. Now BOINC is up and running as a Service, so my S@H crunching is no longer at the mercy of my wife and daughter when I'm not at home!

I also found a link on the board (sorry, can't trace it now, but thanks to whoever posted it) which had a link to a very comprehensive guide to installing BOINC as a Service under Vista: http://www.t4tcolorado.org/article/volunteer-computing-background which was very helpful.

Thanks guys and happy crunching!

I usually set-up a dummy account called either SETI or BOINC (depending on my current whim) and give it a password and limited privileges. Then I install BOINC as a service. The main user account may or may not be given a password (works fine either way).

The only drawback (as stated elsewhere) is it stops at the logon screen until a user is selected. However, the BOINC service starts up and runs immediately without logging in a user. I'm running XP Pro/XP Pro 64. With Vista YMMV.

I am under the impression that there are different versions of Vista. Some newer systems I deal with I can never get Boinc to auto startup on reboot. However, on some machines I bought right when Vista came out I have not had these same problems.

The easiest way to start BOINC manager at startup is to use the Task Scheduler function. Simply create a task that starts at logon and BOINC will start every time with no muss no fuss. And if you use the /s commandline switch it will start minimized.

If you would like detailed directions, please let me know @ del at ahlstedtnet dot net.

Regards,
Del
