Message 704059 - Posted: 25 Jan 2008, 17:40:31 UTC - in response to Message 704042.

This guy was one of the first people I noticed on here, a few years ago. I know I do not have much credit, my account was messed up but I have been around. R.I.P. sad I did not get to talk with him. G

Welcome to the board Gordon, and thank you for your contribution to the thread. Doesn't matter about your credit, the fact that you remember him is good enough.

I was already missing him...And now i know why...I will miss Dennis (Dogbytes) and his wicked sense of humor and the echoes of his hearty laugh on Skype...He was a good friend to many of us...and an excellent comrade...Being a part of SETI was alot more fun while Dennis was around...Because his outrageousness helped make it so.

That's how i remember him too, Dan. :]]

Dennis personified loyalty. He'd do anything for a friend and also against an enemy of his friends. His laughs as well as his barbs will be greatly missed. I'll be sure to say "Yizkor", the prayer of remembrance in his religion, on the anniversary of his passing.

And let's say this about Dennis too: he lived a life. Truly he did.

LeChaim Dennis! To Life! Well done!

@Beets --- well said, my friend.
@Daniel(Mid) --- besides Beets' post, I'm bumping this thread to draw attention to your post regarding the project several of us are crunching to honor Dennis.

Here is Dennis being very serious in his role as a seti mod.

I am absolutely devastated and shocked at the news of his death....

That was probably one of my posts he was modding. :)
Glad we made amends.
The strange thing is, on Christmas morning, I kept accidentally pressing "Dogbytes" instead of "Dad" when I was trying to call my Dad on Skype. Maybe I should have let it keep ringing. We might have known sooner that something was wrong.

Don't blame yourself. There was no way you could have known what had happened.

@Gavin --- I don't blame myself ... at least, I don't think I do. But, I'm still a little haunted by this when I allow myself to think about it. Besides what I described about Christmas morning, I think I had a sense things were going downhill for Dennis. His Skype calls to me were becoming more frequent and those of us that use the Calm Chaos forums saw him a lot in FlashChat. I think I sensed, on some level, that he was doing more to surround himself with his friends from the internet in his last days. I'm tempted to say, "What if I had paid more attention to my emerging gut instinct?" By asking myself this question ... well, am I blaming myself? I don't know.

Many of you probably won't believe me when I tell you that I got to be a bit of a friend to Dennis. 2 or so years ago we were not that way. I got to speaking with him on brief occasion.

I was out of town for a while recently and also 'ahem' absent from posting here.

But if anyone could kindly refer me to an address where I might send his friends or loved ones a condolences card I would appreciate it.

Then where was his funeral. I know he could not have been entirely alone. I'll send things for his name.

Message 733387 - Posted: 1 Apr 2008, 23:58:52 UTC - in response to Message 733237.

Just to let you know, Dennis has finally been cremated.

His ashes are now with Jack Lass in Washington, which will be his final resting place.

One or two of his friends...not just in TFFE..but those he met on his travels or through the projects he crunched for have expressed a wish for some of his ashes as a remembrance to plant a tree or shrub in his name.

I hope no one is offended by this idea, knowing Dennis...he'd be having a damn good chuckle..

To quote Jack:

"I know that Dennis cared very deeply about our team and about the many members whom he met or with whom he conversed on the boards or by Email. I think that "spreading" him around the world will be a fitting tribute to someone who lived at one time or another on every continent but Antarctica. So do think about this and let me know soon. There won't be a lot of ashes --we don't turn into much when we're gone-- but a little can go a long way when planting new life."

So if anyone would like to remember Dennis in this way please send me a PM.

Cheers,

Keith

. . . Thanks for the Update Regarding Dennis - Good News Sir! It is Appreciated

Dune, thank you for the clumsy 'Bump'. I met Dennis many times here. I met him twice in the flesh with Hev and Es at the secret drinking holes in London. A more genuine and friendly spirit would be hard to find. I count myself privileged and lucky to have met him in person. He will be missed here, genuinely and sadly. We who are left are the poorer for his passing. I will never forget you my friend. Never.

In time this thread will pass, but the memories will still be there.

Now is not the time for the thread to pass. I've never met DB in person, but his gruff no nonsense way he approached life will forever stay with me. He died too soon, & left many friends to wonder "what if".

I'm just glad he took the time to know me, even if I was sometimes nonchalant about it. Thanks for being there.

RIP Dennis. You helped me out years ago, and we exchanged a few emails.

I'm very saddened to come back after being away from Seti to find that you've gone.

Won't forget you.

I'll miss you DB,

But we'll see each other again in a time.

Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you.
Whatever we were to each other,
that we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way
which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed
at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word
that it always was.
Let it be spoken without affect,
without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same that it ever was.
There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind
because I am out of sight?

I am waiting for you,
for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just around the corner.

All is well.

~ Henry Scott Holland
