Veteran's Day, originally called Armistice Day, was begun just after WWI. I know you are old, Misfit, but you can't be old enough to remember that.

I sometimes forget that there are often cultural differences that may lead people to be confused by my posts. A bird-bath is a shallow dish on a pedestal that people put in their yards to attract birds. The dish is high enough to deter predators. These baths are employed by people who like the sound and sight of birds in their yards.

So, I would not be interested in bathing in such a cold, rather public place. But thanks for the offer.

(And if you already knew what I was talking about, I apologise for assuming otherwise.)

Last weekend I had some cleaning up to do, and it may extend to this weekend too, so even though I like Wednesdays (half-way to the weekend) I am not looking forward to this Saturday. Maybe I can get out of it--the work, not the weekend--I'm pretty sure I'll get out of the weekend. For now, I'm off to bed and a good book.

I will have an extra long weekend. I get Monday off for the Veterans Day holiday (that falls on Sunday this year). And I'm taking Tuesday off too. But I always take an extra day off for this holiday. Maybe there are a few who remember why...

Rocky?

Negative.

I give up, no, I don't remember. Should I? :-P

It was a good online conference today at work. I found out that I know a lot more than some of the others, I knew the answers to some of the questions. :-D It was interesting, also because there was a couple of people from the tax authorities there to tell about all the new stuff and laws. The point of it all is that now the employers will have to report everything electronically, so now, or from 1/1 2008 we truly can say here that Big Brother is watching us. :-O

And today my boss asked us, my coworker and me, to come up with a wish list for Christmas presents, up to a, very nice, price limit. She doesn't want to just buy something we may not want, so she demands a wish list with at least 3 items and information about where to buy it. So after work I went into a shop just to get inspired, and my God, what a lot of junk one can get! :-O I saw some things where I thought, no, this is not true, you just can't buy that! Among others a banana case, so you can bring a banana with you in it. Why one can't just put it in the bag is beyond me, bananas are not easily bruised!

So now I ponder on what I want. Geeeze I am so picky! If I should wish a new coffee grinder, even I have one already, a new one where I can grind more beans at the same time? Or stainless steel cutlery from Georg Jensen, the kind they used in the movie 2001, A Space Odyssey, even I have nice stainless steel cutlery and silverware? Or something from Stelton, even I already have what I want, the Stelton thermo? Or a stick of RAM, even she got a weird look on her face when we joked about that we always can use a stick of RAM?

Ideas, anybody? I don't want things just to have them...

I was born at the depths of the US depression, so I have some memory of Arlington Cemetery before it was filled with War 2 military casualties. There have been so many more since then.

My service time was at the end of Korea, and I went to Germany rather than the far east.

My hat is off to all who served in combat zones!

They are like pancakes, just made in a special pan like this one:

The old recipes say that you can put pieces of apple down in the batter before you turn them around, but it's not that tasty, most people here like them without anything inside and then dip them in the jam, most strawberries or black currant, they are served with. I like them with syrup also.

Recipe

I have just heated some in the oven and I'm eating them now. :-P

In December we have them with Gløgg, spiced Glüh Wein, with raisins and almond splits. And some æbleskiver to go with.

I don't make them myself, I had a pan somewhere, but they are sold deep frozen in bags, where the price is just about what it will cost to go out and buy the ingredients. And it's easy to heat some in the oven, and they are just as good as home made, sometimes even better, depending on who's making them. My mother made them, but she made them more hollow, so when the leftovers were cold, we filled them with sugar and had them that way. Yummy!

Which I've never had. The Archivist, huh? Nah, that's not me, my memory is way too selective, I only remember what's important to me. Right now I can't remember what I had to eat yesterday...

... Oh yes, æbleskiver!!! I had æbleskiver! ;-D

EDIT: I see some new warriors have been added. :-D

And home again. I continued my search for wishes for the company Christmas present, and today I went into a perfume shop, where I tried on the new fragrance from Calvin Klein, Euphoria. Not my taste, too much vanilla in the scent, even my hand smells relatively good after I have washed my hands, so the bottom notes in it is good. But not the middle notes...

Boy, it's hard to come up with some wishes. Not to sound ungrateful but ...

So I'll have a cup of coffee now.
