It does appear that this is BOINC bug on Leopard because of the possibility of Leopard enforcing an higher security standard. I have BOINC 5.10.28 running other Macs here that running Tiger or even Panther I don't have this issue with them about BOINC using nearly 100% of CPU or preventing shutdown/reboot.

Actually, it's a Leopard bug on BOINC... Leopard is amazing, but it has a lot more bugs than previous releases... ;)

Anyone got a fix for the liquid cooled G5 Macs? In Tiger with BOINC running the pumps and fans never really kicked up any (maybe a just slightly when the room got warm) but in Leopard they cut on nearly full blast just after a few seconds of running the App. I did a full format from Tiger -> Leopard, just FYI. The CPUs don't seem to be getting any warmer than that used to, in fact once the fans kick up they get a lot cooler. Maybe Apple just changed the target temp under load?

I have installed BOINC 5.10.28 on a PowerBook G4 running Leopard. I observed the following behaviors which sometimes lead to real problems:

* BOINC is configured to start at the opening of the session. It is launched, but sometimes the command Òopen BOINC ManagerÓ does not work. The BOINC Manager window does not appear. Killing BOINC and starting it again it, solves the problem. This problem is a little awkward, but not crippling
* When listening to music with iTunes while BOINC is activated, the sound is sometimes cut-off for a few fractions of seconds or more. This problem too it is awkward, but not crippling
* I also observed a temporary blocking of the machine, the fan having suddenly a strong activity. The computer is totally blocked. Keyboard and mouse do not respond any more. This situation can last a few seconds, even a few tens of seconds, and then all goes back to normal behavior. This problem is a little more awkward, but not really blocking
* Sometimes, the machine is completely blocked, the fan enters in action, the machine heats and nothing seems to have effect on it. The keyboard and the mouse are dead. After a while, as nothing seems to be changing, the only solution is to turn the computer off (on/off button). Afterwards, it starts again normally and all seems to be back to normal... until the next incident...

But it seems that work units are processed normally.

I just updated to 5.10.29, I will see if these problems are solved.

Any guesstimate from the volunteer testers/developers on how long it will be until we see an update for Leopard?

Leopard 10.5.1 is currently being beta tested and should be released within a couple of weeks... All 250mb of it! ;)

Holy smokes, BOINC nearly smoked my PowerBook! I had it running for a few days... picked it up to go somewhere, and smelled the burning of electronics emanating from the insides @o@ ! Luckily it appears that nothing's fried, but it brought me to bring down the processor usage to 85%. Youch, that was a close one >< . Now really looking forward to a nice version of BOINC soon :E ...

Maybe.....

Since upgrading to Leopard, my MacBook is running hotter and the battery life is getting shorter... ;)

(Methinks that the new software is overworking the hardware. On the plus side, I now know what the cooling fans sound like.)

Haven't noticed much difference between Tiger and Leopard on my old PowerBook G4. The only time I found it in this condition, since I have processor performance set at automatic, was during the BOINC run. My fans hardly ever turn on, but they sure were then :p ! Used it for the rest of the day and it was fine. But I did notice that Leopard can be a little bit processor intensive at times, though, like when Spotlight's doing it's thing after a fresh OS install/upgrade >< .....

I think probably that my PowerBook (1.0GHz) is near enough to the 800MHz threshold with Leopard that it doesn't make much difference in speed... just slow :p ^_~ heh~

I installed Leopard & can't launch SETI. I downloaded fresh version of BOINC and the installer freezes at the select install drive window. What do I do ? Is SETI going to be updated soon to deal with Leopard ?

Same thing happened to me... Just go to System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall. Click "Set access for specific services and applications" then click the + button. Add "BOINCManager" from your Applications folder AND also add "boinc" which is in Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/Resources. It works after that. I am not sure however how nicely it plays with Leopard. I have odd slowdowns and temporary freezes which I have attributed to BOINC in the end.

Regards
Mark

Just got my copy of Leopard in the mail today (one day early :D ! -go figure :p ~), installed, and it seems that the screensaver doesn't like to work with the new version of the OS. If the BOINC client is open & set to "always run", then the screensaver'll come on, but otherwise all by itself, no (also, the SETI app icon likes to sit in the Dock).

Tried the newest development version, but same effect. Something to look out for as more people install in the coming days ahead.

Regards,
Eric

I've just returned to Seti@Home after several year's absence with an iMac 24 - 2.4GHz. I hope to make up for lost time! However, I am a bit concerned about the app. occupying 100% of both cores. I've seen references to limiting the % occup. that Seti@Home can take. Problem is I haven't been able to find out how to do that. Some "commands for a recent Windows bailer?!! :-)

In the menu bar, go to Advanced -> Preferences... You may have to make the window a little longer vertically because it likes to hide, but it's below "other options" (the third/last value box)... you can find it there ^_^ . Good luck, and welcome back to the Mac :D !

FWIW both the Core2 iMacs on my account run full-time at 100% (under “Tiger”) with no problems.

Hi. I just bought a MacBook 2.2Ghz, with Leopard, and have installed Boinc 5.10.29. Trouble is, I am suspending Boinc most of the time because of the fan noise created by it hogging the cpu, at mostly 100%. Of course, that doesn't help other apps, either.

Is there a solution? If not, I will very sadly have to abandon running Seti (& Einstein), which I have been doing for a long time.
