spending is now under relative control with the Republicans. Spending is so far out of control that it has become totally independent of human intervention: Cost of Iraq War... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Wow, that calculator looks interesting. Yes, I do . The costs are really minimal. You need to adjust in your figures the general given costs of the standing army and then add that to the cost in Iraq. Regardless, Dogbytes...we are there now and that is water under the bridge. All of the hindsight in the world will not change that. Perhaps you are an expert monday morning quarterback and these are prognosticator skills you have neglected to share with the rest of the class? We're THERE now.....and if you wish us to withdraw all troops in January 2009 upon some newly elected president's inauguration then explain how we should then handle that? Explain it please when ALL of even the DEMOCRATS now say no pulling out until 2013. Even The Republicans will get us out faster than that. Marginal costs is what's germane to your question in regard to simple dollars. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Oh the humanity! Rational people crunching data! Back to Hilary, the US economy doesn't seem to be doing terribly badly at the moment, and maybe Bush is hoping that's enough to get the Republican base back out to vote. I'm not so sure, trade deficits and continuing imbalances in the Federal budget surely can't continue without some detrimental effect on the US economy and, perhaps, the US public may realize this and vote in somebody who lived in the White House while the Federal budget showed a surplus ... They can't. It would be nearly impossible to rein in spending enough to do so. Even then, that would only balance the budget; the debt would still remain, for years. They can't rein in spending because there are too many people clamoring for never ending more spending. They believe that "somebody else" pays for this crap. They think that "the gov't, the rich, the corporations," et cetera pays for this stuff. They don't understand that they pay for it, though not directly to the entity involved, but directly out of their pockets. I've used this example before: but take the NHS in the UK. It has a budget of 80 billion or so, and there are 60 million or so of you. So that's 1350 pounds per month, or about 2700 dollars per month. Who do they think pays that? Madonna? Nope. Vauxhall? Nope. Rolls Royce? Nope. British Airways? Nope. To those companies, that cost it just another cost like steel or rubber, added directly to the cost of their products. So the consumer pays every single dime in higher prices. The point being, that no politician can rein in the spending. One, they don't have the political will as has been evidenced since day one. Two, even if they did get close, as soon as they were out of office, everything they did would go out the window. Three, the electorate actually enjoys their standard of living, never really understanding that it is financed on the backs of the rest of the world, and they're tiring of it. Perhaps not when she wants to Nationalize one of the largest segments of the US economy in the history of the nation. And especially not so when spending is now under relative control with the Republicans. That's insane. "Relative control with the Republicans?" They've just continued the Democrat's (gov't's) time honored tradition of running around spending money like drunken sailors on shore leave. Perhaps not when she wants to Nationalize one of the largest segments of the US economy in the history of the nation. And especially not so when spending is now under relative control with the Republicans. I know. But if you factor in the post 9/11 spending necessary for Afghanikickassistan and Iraq the defict spending isn't extraordinary in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The Republicans are always afraid to do what it is they promise to do and the democrats scare rational people because we're afraid they'll actually follow through on their promises. Financially, the GWBush administration hasn't overspent terribly compared to the numbers that matter. That's not to say that I support the spending they've incurred. But facts are facts. Presage 8 At a distance, near Aquarius, Saturn turns back, That year great Mars will give a fire opposition, Towards Russia and to the south the great proud female, Florida in contemplation will hold the port. Quatrain 8.15 Towards Russia great efforts by a masculine woman, Nearly all of Europe and the universe vexed, The two eclipses (US and Russia) will put all to such pursuit, And for the Pannonians (Yugoslavs, and Hungarians) life and death will be reinforced. William Branham (1933) There arose up in America a most beautiful, but cruel woman. She held the people in her complete power. I believed that this was the rise of the Roman Catholic Church, though I knew it could possibly be a vision of some woman rising in great power in America due to a popular vote by women. I heard a most terrible explosion. As I turned to look I saw nothing but debris, craters, and smoke all over the land of America. Biblical and Quranic prophesies omitted... ;) It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . . |

Cow Economics Redux (including the now obligatory reference to California Happy Cows. Skip to the end, if you are from Wisconsin, or can't wait.) DEMOCRAT You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. You feel guilty for being successful. Barbara Streisand sings for you. REPUBLICAN You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So? SOCIALIST You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor. You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow. COMMUNIST You have two cows. The government seizes both and provides you with milk. You wait in line for hours to get it. It is expensive and sour. CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE You have two cows. You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows. DEMOCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE You have two cows. The government taxes you to the point you have to sell both to support a man in a foreign country who has only one cow, which was a gift from your government. BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE You have two cows. The government takes them both, shoots one, milks the other, pays you for the milk, and then pours the milk down the drain. AMERICAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one. You force the two cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses. Your stock goes up. FRENCH CORPORATION You have two cows. You go on strike because you want three cows. You go to lunch and drink wine. Life is good. JAPANESE CORPORATION You have two cows. You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains. Most are at the top of their class at cow school. GERMAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour. Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year. ITALIAN CORPORATION You have two cows but you don't know where they are. While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman. You break for lunch. Life is good. RUSSIAN CORPORATION You have two cows. You have some vodka. You count them and learn you have five cows. You have some more vodka. You count them again and learn you have 42 cows. The Russian Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have. TALIBAN CORPORATION You have all the cows in Afghanistan, which are two. You don't milk them because you cannot touch any creature's private parts. Then you kill them and claim a US bomb blew them up while they were in the hospital. IRAQI CORPORATION You have two cows. They go into hiding. They send out tapes of their mooing. POLISH CORPORATION You have two bulls. Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them. FLORIDA CORPORATION You have a black cow and a brown cow. Everyone votes for the best looking one. Some of the people who like the brown one best, vote for the black one. Some people vote for both. Some people vote for neither. Some people can't figure out how to vote at all. Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which is the best-looking cow. NEW YORK CORPORATION You have fifteen million cows. You have to choose which one will be the leader of the herd, so you pick some fat cow from Arkansas. CALIFORNIA HAPPY COWS Crowd a herd of happy fun loving cows into a small dirt lot. Feed cows weeds. Hire Hollywood to show commercial of HAPPY COWS in green pastures. Smoke weed left over from cow feeding. Make millions selling "HAPPY CHEESE." |

Wake me up when the real campaign starts. This is kind off like watching a year of preseason exhibition games. Nothing counts and players get injured for nothing. Hopefully the cosmos is not trying to reverse the charges. Moderation in all things. |

[quote]You mean other than being a Dumbocrat, remaining married to an adulterer and only the 3rd man in US history to face impeachment and trying to push a health care plan that will be paid for by the working man and utilized by those without real jobs? While I disagree with his morals while president, he certainly was not the first to do what he did. Kennedy would have been impeached in the "modern day" for his flings with Marilyn Monroe. Clinton made a lot of mistakes, but none of those mistakes cost American lives. We did not enter any unnecessary wars (and before you jump on that, I'm talking Iraq, not Afghanistan). We had a more vibrant economy. In my view, if Hillary wins, we'll get Bill also. We certainly need someone who can repair our country. I've been a Republican all my life but after 8 years of "Dubya", I'm nearly a Democrat. |

While I disagree with his morals while president, he certainly was not the first to do what he did. Kennedy would have been impeached in the "modern day" for his flings with Marilyn Monroe. How so? Adultery isn't an impeachable offense. It never has been. Clinton wasn't impeached for Monica Lewinsky, Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, The other 6 or 8, the woman that insists he raped her and so on. He was impeached for lying under oath. Clinton made a lot of mistakes, but none of those mistakes cost American lives. We did not enter any unnecessary wars (and before you jump on that, I'm talking Iraq, not Afghanistan). We had a more vibrant economy. Clinton's war record: the highest number of foreign military engagements than any president in history. Unnecessary? Kosovo? Bosnia? Somalia? As for a more vibrant economy I never give much credit for that to ANY president. But you may want to thank the Republican revolutionary congress in 1994. In my view, if Hillary wins, we'll get Bill also. We certainly need someone who can repair our country. I've been a Republican all my life but after 8 years of "Dubya", I'm nearly a Democrat. There's a great difference in faulting 'Dubya' for not being conservative or libertarian enough vs siding with outright socialists/statists that dislike 'Dubya' for not expanding government power, control, and spending more than he has.
