Somehow Jeffrey I suspect there are some people that pray you fulfill your dream of leaving us and residing on some far away place like Pluto.

Only some? Maybe I should turn up the intensity a bit... ;)

A question rarely asked these days is:

"How has 'religion' and 'spirituality' enriched our everyday lives?"

(... and no I'm not inviting quotes from the bible or other tracts... nor non-religious quotes or tracts..)

For the most part our written and discovered history has told us religious or spiritual values have influenced our cultures for 99% of human history to one level or another.

It's only in the past few hundred years that we have developed cultures in the 'Western World' that have seperated themselves from 'religious / spiritual' ways of dealing with the world.

I've seen lots of arguements against religion but it would be nice to see what positive legacies religion has given us and how it has made us better!

I mean after thousands of years of religion it must have left us a core legacy even in our popular and scientific thought or direction.

We must have gained something of value?

As people?

God gave us a perfect ethical system... The farther we get from that, the worse our ethics become... ;)

(Methinks you're asking this question a few hundred years too late. The damage has already been done.)

With the greatest of respect Jeffrey that is a statement of your belief.

But how does your answer express how religion or spirituality has enriched 'our' lives?

(Methinks you're asking this question a few hundred years too late. The damage has already been done.)

Well a few hundred years ago I'd of probably died from some horrid ailement or from poverty before having the chance to know enough to ask such questions.

In fact I'd of probably been flogged or killed for even presuming to ask such questions either 'religious' or 'scientific'.

I don't think I'm too late asking the question. Now is my only time!

Nor do I think any "damage has already been done" - Can 'truth' really be damaged?

I wasn't asking for a godly or scientific answer.

I just wondered if people could look into their cultures or lives and find things of value that religion has given them without the need to quote anything much....

Nothing more...

I acknowledge that religion has been responsible for most of the significant technological advances in the field of dungeon torture equipment. The industry would be primitive today without religion's contribution.

edit: Just heard this reported. There was a failed assassination attempt of former Prime Minister Bhutto in Pakistan. A bomb was strapped to a baby and the plan was to hand the baby to Bhutto when she passed by. Fortunately for Bhutto and unfortunately for the baby the bomb exploded prematurely. Baby bits everywhere.

So I credit religion with advancing baby bomb technology too.

To try and score arguement points using the death of a baby in a bombing is truely the sadest thing I have seen you do SC.

I'm so sorry :o(

Just let it be.

I am not religious but I would have liked to have posted more in this thread.

Even if I do not believe in a religion I do feel life is something so profound and spiritual that every oppourtunity to learn and grow is valuable.

I just wish people who are more able to make this thread something special would come back and join in.

I am 'learning and growing...' , Crunchy.

You , I'm sad to say *does best Samuel L. Jackson voice--are not free to dictate what I learn*.

I AM MORE ABLE. You may not like what I am 'more able' at....but it's the truth.

You cannot expect to get automatic agreement from people that fundamentally disagree with you when you ask a question. Furthermore, if you wish to express 'disappointments' or whatever else at said answers you need to refrain from asking such questions.

I suggest , however, that you do not refrain from asking them as many rational people such as myself enjoy replying to them.

Tis the season!. Don't take it personally...or take it personally if you must. It's your mind after all. You're not 'entitled' to receive answers that suit you. You get what you ask for. That is the nature of freedom of expression and is within the historical sympathy of liberalism that free ideas flow from.

By the way, Jeffrey. Since we (mostly me) have continuously requested of you to speak to the point as to whether or not you denounce suicide bombers of this type and you have continously responded either with scripture or with heckling do you think it is proper that the UC Berkeley staff allow you to post here?

I'd like to post a current events type question where news stories of religious abuses are reported. Please post your events here.

These are occurring on a daily basis. And I'm fully within the rights of the rules of this board to ask that you people report them.

No understanding of what benefits that are claimed for 'society' by religion are complete or honest without also understanding some of the negatives.

Thanks.

Jeffrey, you said the other day that the matters of this world are to be left to science and the other religious matters are to be left to the afterlife.

Which is it?

If, by the way, you regard your 10 commandments to be an exception, may someone else not issue commandments to be accepted upon faith? Blind faith?

What's the difference between your 'holy' books and mine?

By the way....we are all still waiting for you to renounce suicide bombers. You never do so.....so in the meantime we do not wish to be converted to your 'holy' religion. This is perhaps the 10th time you've been asked to speak out against murder done in the name of your 'peaceful religion of islam'. (I won't capitalize your religion's name anymore)

The only 'inch and a half' here is yours...and it's even unused.

Just as an aside point will anyone be doing something positive for others this Xmas?

Anyone going to go out and serve food on a table in their city centre? Give out clothes? Donate some time or effort to others?
