Message 648942 - Posted: 26 Sep 2007, 11:18:58 UTC

This afternoon, I will be working on a project plan for the following:-

upgrading, building, rebuilding & reconfiguring network.

The affected machines are:- all except AMD3200.

Until I start, I have all machines on NNT & once project commences, will have to abort the others as ALL hard drives will be wiped (switching from PATA to SATA 2 on my systems).

My apologies to my wingmen.

No need to apologise, as long as you abort them and don't just disappear!
Aborting jobs is considerate.

Back up the boinc directories, and then copy them back after reinstallation.

Why wipe the disks? Just copy everything from the pata to sata drives, then wipe the pata if you won't be using them again.
Andy.

Sirius, I don't think apologies are necessary as long as you do the right thing, i.e., aborting the remaining WUs as you say you will do.

I had to do the same thing 2 days ago. I thought I had turned on the NNT, but apparently didn't. When you abort the WUs are automatically put back into the queue, ready for assignment to another cruncher.

Just make sure you update after you abort.

Hi guys. All systems are NNT.

Andy, I have to wipe all drives as I am swapping them around, I am legally bound to wipe as XP are OEM disks & are only for the m/b's on those systems.

Also as I am building new systems for my network, & I have 2 customers urgently requiring systems, I have to take stock of all kit to make sure that I do not inadvertently give away kit I purchased for network & also ensure that I install correct copies of o/s.

At this moment, I have 2 wu's on amd3800 with only 15 mins to completion, once finished, wil abort as this will be the first to upgrade (new m/b & drives), then amd3200a, then XP3200.

When finished, will be adding amd3700 & OMG!, an Intel (Shock Horror! - eventually sold to customer -(What a relief)).

No wingmen or project will suffer. I've read enough posts with regards to this matter to prevent myself becoming a moron!

Regards

AMD3800 & AMD3200A working wu's completed & all others aborted, systems shut down.

XP2000 has 45 mins remaining & will shut down when completed.

Hope to have network back up & running before the weekend, but if not, have a pleasant weekend, & Sirius B will be back next week for definite (with a slighter larger "farm").

Regards to all.

Forgive me if I'm having a blonde moment, but what is NNT? networked NT?

Wiping XP gives a kind of Zen-like satisfaction, but the boinc project data is yours, and can be transplanted easily to another machine while keeping the same ID and not unnecessarily adding to the million dead heroes!

Thanks, glad to be back. Would have had all 3 back online by now, but had constant interruptions all evening.

That is the major problem with working from home! No 2 should be ready in approx 30 mins.

Sorry guys. No 1 kept shutting down. (See "Heat" Thread)

Problem now resolved regarding system, but unfortunately, Hard Drives were unaccessible & the only choice remaining was to reformat & reinstall.

This meant losing all wu's on amd3800. I did have backup images, but they returning file corrupt errors, so have no choice but to reinstall everything.

On completed, will NOT install bionc for at least 72 hours. This should be sufficient time for system to either settle down or throw up any errors.

My apologies to wingmen.

Regards

Sirius B, it was discussed in your "Detaching from Project" thread, I think.
I had to switch between two laptops very quickly (not my choice) and had a large cache. Some folks walked me through moving the stuff off the one laptop to the other so I could finish crunching what was in the cache.

Thanks Sarge, problem was that I could not find the thread, went through the threads again, & still can't find it.

I wanted to save it for future reference.

Yes, that's the one, Richard. Sirius B, he beat me to tracking down the thread (or explaining how tracking down can be accomplished).

(or explaining how tracking down can be accomplished).

I wrote it, so I looked back through my own posting history for one that seemed relevant!

(pssssst - there's a search function, too)
