I just have one thing to say about all of this. Intel better be VERY careful that they don't put AMD out of business. Competition spurs innovation. Having AMD around is (of course) good for the AMD employees and shareholders, it is good for the public (ever faster and more capable CPUs is a good thing), and (bizarrely enough) it is good for the Intel employees and shareholders. If AMD tanks, Intel won't need as much R&D, plus they would be likely to get the Govt. snooping around because of a lack of effective competition. It is a good thing for BOTH companies (and the rest of us as well) to trade 'the lead' back and forth periodically. And no, I am not a fan boy of either company. I buy what is the best deal at the moment that I need a new computer. Of the 5 computers that my wife and I have at the moment, 3 are Intel, 2 are AMD. Who?: Perhaps, since it is known that you are an Intel employee, it might be best if you spent a little less time crowing about how Intel is currently in the lead, and a little bit more time watching your rear-view mirror. If AMD wrecks, Intel just might declare you redundant. :P Remember, it is in your best interests for them to catch up and pass Intel again. Myself, I am interested in BOTH companies' new (and soon to be released) offerings. |

That is precisely what I tried to state, but totally messed up. If it ends up with no competition, somebody will have to pay for increased costs, redundancies etc & at the end of the day, it will be the consumer. |

Nah, the above is well intentioned but not good advice. Whether or not AMD survives (the fear stated above) is not relevant. There are plenty of companies capable of beating a complacent Intel. For example, the folks behind Cell. It makes no sense for them to do so today perhaps, because Intel has not fallen back to complacency. But as the application space evolves and holes are poked through Intel's business plan imaginative competitors can burst into the limelight. Consider GPU's, game consoles, and advanced mobile computing as realistic examples today. What WOULD be bad is for people to prop up a dead horse just because it once was a good option to Intel. I'm not saying that AMD is dead horse, but they seem to be relying on the liberal courts and anachronistic 19th century monopoly laws, and the perverted capitalism extant in Europe, soon to be ushered into dominance in the US by the Donkey/BigBrother party, to 'grow' the company. And, I agree, who? should really restrain his enthusiasm; it doesn't look good for the company nor is it professional; its kind of like locker room talk- not to be made public. But the part of Intel he represents has frequently been an embarassment over the years. This is why his management doesn't pay any attention; they don't know any better. |

I'm just gonna sit back and watch what happens as a few more Barcelona rigs hit the Seti circuit and see how they do. They few that have started up are probably not up to speed yet, give 'em a chance. And I eagerly await the arrival of a few Penryn rigs as well, to see if they live up to the hype surrounding them. You don't seriously think that the PowerPc could replace Intel? They couldn't even supply Apple with enough chips. |

scince barcelona is a spanish city, maybe the cpu thinks it should be on siesta all the time lol May haps we should suggest a new name for the AMD quad. Let's call it the Siesta. Better sounding and more discriptive. :) |

You don't seriously think that the PowerPc could replace Intel? They couldn't even supply Apple with enough chips. Motorola couldn’t, but that was a long time ago. I doubt IBM’s problem was with production volume; they just couldn’t make a PowerPC that would run as efficiently (in terms of power requirements and operating temperature) as the competition’s offerings. |

Yes it is.
Now i'll leave that conclusion to yourself... if it's slower at the same clockspeed then it must be ... P.S. HINT ... it's C*A* Join BOINC United now! |

It's a well known fact that the Core 2 architecture excells at floating point. That's why they do so well here on Seti. I am still open to the fact that AMDs may fair much better on other real world applications. But here on Seti........ And the kitties say.........'Show me the Beef...' Who Wants To Be A Millionaire My wife and I are watching "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" while we are in bed. I turned to her and said,Do you want to have sex?" "No." She answered. I then said, "Is that your final answer?" Yes." She replied. Then I said, " I'd like to phone a friend." That's the last thing I remember. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." If No one else will say It, Crunch3r was saying It's a bunch of hockey pucks, buffalo chips, etc, at that speed, So much for a native quad core, Intel wins. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |
