what do you think the limit is for ocing this processor. i got it up to 2222.2 mhz and my temp sensor says that its running about 106 chipset is at 107 and case is at 76. its verry stable at full load but if i go any higher my pc locks up. im using cpucool and softfsb to oc. cant do it in bios :(

Here is the INTEL SHEET which refers to case temp of 100, but they mention a lot of other information if you click on the "Thermal Specification" link which is all greek to me.

Well,

Thermal spec 100 C.
That's the processor max temp.
Something like 212 F as far as I remember.

If those are F temps then no problem...

Coolbits is for Nvidia video cards, It doesn't do anything for the cpu at all.

well i can only get 2.2 ghz out of it before it becomes too unstable. to you think that i can get anymore out of it. maybe someone has done this with my processor and mobo, and can give me some insight inot this. my mobo is a ns-7005 ver 1.

I have the same mobo but version 2 rather than version 1. I don't know what the difference is but usually a new version is done to correct some design flaw or add some other improvements or extra functionality. I'm also running a Celeron but a 2.4GHz one which easily overclocks to 3.2GHz.

You should find in the BIOS on yours, the ability to change from 2.0GHz to 2.66Ghz. This is effectively changing from 100FSB (20x100=2000) to 133FSB (20x133.3=2666). On mine it's 24x100=2400 to 24x133.3=3200.

If I were you, I'd try it at the 2.66GHz BIOS setting and see if it will post. It has worked on several 2.4's for me so I would think it may well work on 2.0's. It can't hurt to give it a quick try. Just remember that if it does post, that's no guarantee that it will run stable at 100% CPU load :). It should allow you to get into Windows though.

The real benefit of going straight from 100 FSB to 133 FSB is that the PCI/AGP frequencies will be at their proper values of 33/66MHz. If you take it from 100 -> 110 -> 120, etc, the PCI/AGP busses will be progressively more out of spec and so a failure may be more to do with that rather than the inability of the CPU to handle the increase. The other thing to check is what type of memory you have and what it is capable of. If it is SDRAM, it just needs to be PC133 and you will be fine. If it's DDR RAM then DDR266 (PC2100) is what you need as a bare minimum.

EDIT: I just had a quick look on the MSI website. The MS-7005V1 has a marketing name of 651M-L whilst the MS-7005V2 has a marketing name of 651M-V. One of the significant differences is in supported CPUs. It looks like they added support for Celeron D and Prescott and subtracted support for Williamette when they went to V2. The V2 is labelled as Prescott ready. The latest BIOS for each is different so be careful if you intend to flash your BIOS.

well it works and its really stable at 2.667 ghz. and its only at 107 degrees i think that i could get more out of it, but i dunno how much is too much.


EDIT: upon inspection i had a stick of 3200 and a stick of 2100 so i think that was the majority of my problems. but im still looking to go faster. im the type of person that will push it to the limit. ill keep driving even when my gas guage says 0 miles till empty.

You have a socket 478 motherboard that supports hyperthreading and the last bios for ver. 1.0 was made in 2003, This motherboard has an AGP slot or built in graphics and uses DDR ram(2GB max), This motherboard uses an SiS chipset too.

Shouldn't be. PC2100 is rated at 133FSB anyway and you weren't even there when your previous overclocking attempt failed. It's much more likely to be the PCI/AGP frequencies going out of spec. Of course, this will happen again if you push on above 133FSB. In addition you will max out your CPU at some point.

You should curb your enthusiasm and use something like prime95 to make sure you have stability where you are before pushing higher :).

I have two machines with this processor and am interested in overclocking them, however I do not want to spend the money aftermarket cooling options. Will the stock intel heatsink and fan be sufficient at 2.66 ghz. to keep them running stable?

well boinc has been crunching al night long without a problem. the stock heatsink is fine on the cpu make sure its clean and the fan works on it. the only other thing i did was i took a couple of old power supply fans and added them to my case. i put them at the bottom sucking in. the other thing i did was i put a better heat sink and fan on my chipset. so far my processor hasent went passed 110 degrees. the only other thing is can your mobo be overclocked? some mobos are really limited to what you can do.



she made it through the stress test with only one hickup. i swapped out my dimm and it went away. :)

i dont know what else to do to continue the setting in my mobo only goes to 133 fsb.
