Message 589615 - Posted: 20 Jun 2007, 19:59:59 UTC

I like the slight difference in the look.
I found out about this by looking at the messages tab, something I rarely do.
Looking at the main page, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/, I do not see an announcement of the update.
I still wish for an automated notice when a newer version of the BOINC manager is available.

Adds memory and disk usage in the messages file, also you can fine tune settings without doing it over the web and save them locally. No big deal really.

Also allows you to sort by columns.

And also allows the project to abort WUs that are deemed unnecessary. See this thread for more info.

My screen saver on the Macintosh works again... Yea!

Oh, wait... I don't use that feature... ;)

What's the snooze feature?

What's the snooze feature?

I think it does the same thing as 'suspend' under the activity tab in the Boinc manager. Hit the snooze and then open the Boinc manager and see what it says on the tasks page.

It suspends BOINC, but AFAIK only for an hour. Like the snooze button on your alarm clock will tell it to go off again in a short while (usually 5 - 15 min.).

Any reason it's not recommended version anymore???

The recommended version has gone back to 5.8.16

Probably because of the Explorer fault which leads to the desktop blanking out it's causing on some systems. FWIW, it's run fine on my Win2K guinea pig.

There have been numerous reports of 5.10 versions crashing EXPLORER.EXE, an important windows process. It probably won't be back as the recommended version until the developers are sure they've removed the problem.

OzzFan!!!
Hey, I sent you about 3 PMs, after you PMd me, but you never responded?!?
Wassup with that?

Anywho ...

I would like to again raise the issue that when BOINC crunches SETI WUs for me on my laptop, the laptop will eventually spontaneously shut itself down. I have no such difficulties on my desktop, nor difficulties with other projects I have running except possibly 1 or 2.

Jason Safoutin (sp?) mentioned something about how his fan sounds like a jet taking off. I used to have the same issue, until I stopped using the screensaver. (Yes, I had already cleaned out the fan.)

I think he and I have similar laptops, as I seem to recall he also has an HP.

Please, folks, let me know what info from my preferences page you need me to cut and paste and what specs about my laptop you need to know, so that you can help me sort through this problem.

Thanks ever so much! :)

Sarge, I've seen the spontaneous shutdown on 2 laptops. Each time it's been due to heat build up. You could try checking the temp, and maybe using threadmaster to lower the cpu useage. (not good news I know)

The threadmaster is under the performance tab of the Task Manager, correct?

BOINC has the option in Advanced Prefs, Processor Usage to limit CPU usage, use at most n% of CPU time.
