To take up an idea from the "Illegal Immigration - right or wrong" thread: I wonder if it's always right to strictly obey the laws, or is it better to take laws as a guideline as long as they are morally and ethically right? Account frozen... |

Hmmmm.... This is a pretty good question I think. My thought is....is it right for someone to take a Stop sign as a guidleine?? Or is it right that they simply stop?? There are some VERY silly laws from many years ago that are still on the books. This subject has the potential to be rather slippery. To take up an idea from the "Illegal Immigration - right or wrong" thread: OK.. Let me be me.. I know the 'Immigrant..' (and 'Gun') thread were American ONLY things but let me just stop you for a moment... Do you want my ideas? Can I join In? Will you SETI crunchers hear me or are we billions of people outside of the USA's 120 or so million not to be listened to? I know if you are American you need to talk about your own things but SETI is a world wide community..?? I fall apart being alive... but I so want to join in... Is this a US only thread.... yet again :( Or can I talk to my friends regardless of their birth or blood.. Sorry for being me.. again.. |

To take up an idea from the "Illegal Immigration - right or wrong" thread: Actually, Crunchy...Thorin is from Germany so I don't think the " American Issues Only " tag would apply to this thread... Morals and ethics, eh? I'm afraid that these days it depends on who's morals and ethics you subscribe to, as it seems that very few are emparted to the young. There seems to be little dicipline given to youngsters these days. Instead of 'you do this, you don't do that, and here is why', they get more of 'hey, your parents can't treat you like that, you have rights'. What a bunch of hogwash. Laws can be obeyed or ignored. Doesn't matter much until you get caught. The important thing is morals. Why did you do what you did, and how do you ratiinalize it or excuse it. Or do you even give a rat's petoot? I have by the Grace of God to have been given by MY elders a good sense of right from wrong, a great German work ethic, and a good dose of 'common sense', something that cannot be taught exept by example. Darn.. I was trying to make a statement even if I did it in a cRappy pathetic way.. I tried.. Sorry :( "Is to follow the laws always right?" NO! I think our laws (mine in the UK) should be our best hopes and our protection.. They should never be something to be followed but things to be achieved or mark the borders of our falling. But then I am mad.. You sure this isn't a US thread? <Big gRin> |

Ever hear of "jury nullification"...? You might have told everyone else but I'm happily rather ignorant of everything... I hope you have a big whacking stick! When in England do as the English do! |

For some of us this could be a dangerous question to answer. (Innocent...with an explanation) Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

Aw shucks, anybody's 2 bits is always welcome, as long as they are civil about it. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

... and a UK thread and a Germany thread and an Australia thread and and and... It's a thread for all people all over the world who are expected to obey their laws. But I could narrow the question a bit: Is to follow the laws always right even if they are morally or ethically (due to your common sense, or due to your belief/conviction) just wrong? I was one of the people in the UK's 'Poll Tax' riots.. Actually I didn't riot I just marched with my friends and I never saw a police officer hit any one. If the law said I should kill anyone that had green skin I would rather die myself. I think it is a matter of degrees. Some people would happily report someone for being 'something' others couldn't care less.. Are you asking the question because you have just broken the law Thorin.. HeHehe.. Tell us :o) |

I supppose one could consider it 'right' to disobey the laws when they don't coincide with your morals or beliefs. But would that extend to the bombing of Oklahoma City? "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I won't go there but if Oklahoma City was full of bubonic plague and every single citizen there wanted to kill me and all the children in my town I would seriously consider bombing them big time... Back in the real world I challenge anyone here on these SETI board to come forwards and say they have never ever downloaded or used some piece of software that they should have paid for but did not... |
