Message 578927 - Posted: 31 May 2007, 3:28:14 UTC - in response to Message 578924.

Does anyone know how to shut down the email notification?
I know I can do it through 'preferences' but that would stop messages that I might actually want.

btw: yes, Knightmare, I know. I am weak. Very, very weak :)

In the case I am thinking of, I now highly doubt it.

Kenzie, right now there is no other way to shut off the email notification other than changing the preferences to stop all email notifications of anything. I think I put that in the email as well to Rytis, so when I get home, in 4 hours, and if I'm still awake enough, and if he replied to me already, I'll post it, otherwise it will be later tomorrow when I wake up. :-)

Ok, no reply from Rytis yet, so it will be later this afternoon my time when I wake up to see if he wrote back. I'll let you all know.

Hey Jeremy....just another suggestion for Rytis ( in case it hasn't been mentioned and I'm too lazy to look it up )....how about a " Delete All " button for messages that have been read??

Hey folks,

I still haven't heard anything from Rytis, I just re-sent the email along with the last 2 suggestions from KM and cRunchy. Once again, as soon as I hear anything, I'll throw it out to you all.

Ok, so I'm home now. Here's the email, the whole thing, nothing edited. Hope it answers some questions. If theres more, post your questions, I'll forward them on. Rytis has been extremely busy, and as you will read in the email, he just has not been able to reply right off the bat.

Jeremy

Hello,

I don't know if you got my last email, but I am forwarding it again just
in case.

I received it, probably did not find time to respond, though.

Also, some folks on some different boards that have enabled the PM
system, are asking if theres any news on having a Delete All button and
a folder for Sent messages?

I am going to implement that. I created two separate tickets in Trac so that you can track progress:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/235 - outbox
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/236 - deletion

Sorry to bug you, I know your busy. Just trying to help out. Thank you
again for your time.

No problem. At least you approach nicely - I am under heavy attack about PM stuff, where some people don't accept how the feature is done... The same was with the team founder change, but they got used to it... I guess it will be the same with PMs :)

And is there any information posted about how it works, for example, how
many posts can your inbox contain? Will thay auto delete when the box
fills up to a certain number of posts or after a certain date if you do
not manually delete them?

For now it is unlimited. I don't think that PMs take up a lot of server resources, so I think there is no need to lower the functionality. We will see about the usage later. However, if the changes will be done, I believe they will be clearly communicated.

I see the red X got added, along with what KM asked for. But, it'd be
nice to have it list which forums you can go back to.

I guess it will be the forum you where in last. But with more buttons
you could get to any forii.

There's a bit of problem with this one. I added a link to forum index from PM pages, but it's really problematic to carry on the information from which forum page you originally came. I'm not sure if this will ever be done; it is a very low priority task.

And from Longshanks/Ice:
It seems to me that the moderators are keen to ask us to contact
setimod-this and adminmod-that, although amazingly always fail to
include these email addresses in the notices they send out. So how about
a button to PM setimod-whatever and admin-whatever, or just to say what
the email address is. And maybe any buttons for any other addresses they
recommend we should use to communicate our thoughts and wishes.

This should be done by the project staff. Maybe set up an account with name "moderators" which would be accessible to every mod, and add a link somewhere in the web page.

How about it Rytis, can we make communication a little bit easier with
just an extra button or some to add to 'Inbox' and 'Write'? Maybe a
pull-down menu if there is a selection.

Not sure I understand what you want with this one. What should the dropdown contain?

If you respond to this post and have certain questions, please edit out everything other than what you have a question about, it will make it a lot easier to go through. Thanks.

If you are interested in having a separate filter for the board and for your PM's, where you don't mind reading people's posts, but you are not interested in receiving PM's from them, please speak up here and I'll take it to the right people.

Nothing in particular - I was simply thinking that a drop down menu would save the upper page being filled with extra links - a drop down menu with the options might make things tidier.

More specifically, where it says "return to forum index," drag down to see the different forums listed, so that one can select the forum to go to from the drop down menu and go straight to the desired forum. Going back to the forum index, on the other hand, requires going through 2 pages instead of 1.

Longshanks and Sarge,

I forwarded your last 2 posts to Rytis just now, so I'll let you know when I hear further.

Fuzzy,

I didn't know that you wanted to take over the communications with the forum guy, if thats the case, then this will be my last email. I was doing this as a courtesy for people here. So if thats the case, its all yours, and this is the last email I send Rytis regarding this subject.

Oh no, not at all, I think it's great that you have got a response from Rytis and I appreciate your initiative.

I raised the question here, because I remember some have mentioned they would like to have the possibility to have separate filters for postings on the board and for receiving PM's and this thread is the one about PM's so I posted here.

In fact I have been in contact with Rytis before about some other issues with the PM feature, and I have opened a ticket for having separate filter lists myself, which David Anderson has answered to that he doesn't think it's necessary unless others than me request it. So this is the reason I'm asking here.

Can we prioritise. I mean the forum and PM features require work and effort for those who might otherwise already have other duties.

Top of my wish list are:

1. Delete all
2. Outbox

I am sure I could add other ideas but today for me these would be a good place to start.

As to separate filters for boards and PMs? I don't get spam or rubbish in my PM box and rarely see anthing on the forums I truely dislike that I could not cope with or simply ignore.

It would be interesting to hear if other do?

How about check boxes for each post - and a delete checked button.

Please concentrate on possible updates to the Private Message user interface in this thread.

I have started a new thread Use of Private Messages to discuss our use of PMs (both acceptable and unacceptable.) I have moved a few recent posts there.
