If you haven't read the front page news, Sun is coming through with a replacement science database server (yay!) which will be arriving Monday afternoon.

More on this later (or read previous threads to find out more information about the outage).

Matt,

This is good news.

BarryAZ asked a question about deadline extensions. Could you address this in this thread?

Thanks...

Brian

I just downloaded and installed the Boinc software, but I assume that with the server situation nothing will happen until next week, correct? Sorry if this is the wrong thread, SETI@HOME newby.

You are partially correct. There is nothing that will be happening with SETI; however, there are other projects to which you could attach until SETI comes back online or in addition to SETI.

BarryAZ asked a question about deadline extensions.

Matt previously addressed this issue. He said that no extensions are expected to be made because there is no reason not to upload and report your completed results now. That part of SETI and BOINC is still and has been working. The only outage is the ability to download new work units, although the reporting part can at times be difficult and may require multiple retries. You are urged to upload and report all your completed work units now.

When all SETI systems are restored, obviously there will be a gigantic crush to grab new work units. Some people will be greedy and try to download a week's worth of work right away, but I would urge everyone to reset your cache size to half a day, or no more that one day, to try to spread the few available work units around equitably. When the work units available to download reaches around 100,000, then boost your requested cache size to normal. I myself only carry a 2-day cache normally, anyway.

Thanks to SUN for their help, and thanks to all of the Berkeley people, and especially to Matt for keeping us informed with his well-written and sometimes humourous commentary. It is appreciated.

As a hardware geek, I'm very curious too. This is great news that Sun is coming through with another donation. Whenever you have time to get around to it Matt, I'd be interested to know what's under the hood. 8-)

Just had a thought. As a way of thanks to Sun Microsystems for their genorous donation may I humbly suggest naming the new server Helios.

In case you don't know (as unlikely as that seems) Helios is the Greek sun deity.
