What is happening people !
Almost always i press the update button to get new work it says that the project is down !
I only can get 3 to 5 workunits per day at best and sometime i have to wait almost 12 hours to report the results beacose the freaking servers are almost always down !
I am thinking about leaving seti ! I lost so much electricity by leaving my computer on for dooing NOTHING !yeah maibe 2 or 3 hours per day i crunch data but for the rest its idle !

Right now the big Sun Server which holds the Master Science Database has crashed hard, therefore the project is down as far as getting any new work until it gets fixed.

You should still be able to upload and report the work you have onboard, but apparently reports are going slowly, mostly because of the volume of hosts calling in to ask for new work which isn't there to give.

Is it advisable to shut off the auto-request for work? If this helps its no problem from our side.

If you mean setting BOINC to No New Tasks, yes that would probably help to reduce the delays in getting completed work reported. Just don't forget to keep an eye out for when they get the MSD back up and turn it back on. ;-)

Disabling Network Access for BOINC will help as well, but isn't an option if you run other projects.

Pretty much everyone recommends crunching for more than one project.

One thing that is not stated is the fact that Seti@home needs money to upgrade it's equiptment and meet operational costs. They are having failures and are doing everything that they can do to patch things together. It's frustrating I know. But if you really want to be part of the solution, consider making a donation. Yes, you are burning a lot of electricity but consider how much the main servers are too. Currently Seti@home needs about $200,000 to keep running for the current year. There are millions of users. If everyone donated just $1 dollar a year, we would not have these outages. Consider giving something. Don't just complain, be part of the solution.

Carlos---

I haven't seen any updates on where the project is financially as of late...would be nice to see regular updates as we had been seeing before.

alex: you should pay at least a marginal attention to the project you participate in... Anyway, up to the moment MSD crashed, i hadn`t any problem with connecting to SETI or getting work. Maybe your internet connection is the issue?

I'm going to Einstein for a bit till Thumper is fixed in 2 days(That is when the last of My stored WUs will be exhausted)

Just as a warning, don't be surprised if the results there are less than stellar (like 20-26 hours) for your AMD systems. Also, don't be surprised if the units crash. If they do, try reducing the overclocking...

w00t! I got about 100 LHC units!

...of course they only last like 20 minutes each, so that's only about 30-36 hours of work...

They're making some major changes for S5R3, and S5R2 is basically a beta run for that. Also the new app is rather crude at this point to what we became accustomed to in the last few runs.

Einstein WU's never took that long before, so why should they now?

Take a gander at my A64 3700+ overclocked to 2750 with DDR-500, basically making it the same as an FX-57. Roughly 93,000 seconds per WU, which is roughly 26 hours...

As Alinator mentioned, S5R2 is fundamentally a beta test for S5R3. Just giving you warning so that you're not overly surprised...

Blurf

Actually, you are correct and I also do not know when/where the next donation push is... I think the push is in the direction is supposed to be a machine or two capable of Real Time Persistency checking and Operation Costs... But then those for the Internet side have decreased slightly... They still need Big Sata II drives to ship back and forth for the MultiBeam Data that hopefully you all will soon be crunching... But that is Happening in Seti Beta along with Astropulse...

The push also put a Gigabyte Switch in place that would allow better traffic flow... The old hardware, does not do Gigabit... The older machines still have a network bottleneck to get traffic through...

The last push between Hardware and money gave everyone a bit of a respite... The upgrade and putting hardware in place has taken weeks... Overall Everyone that has Helped Has Made a Difference... The loss of Thumper aside...

So my communications with Eric have mostly been connectivity, server issues over the last few weeks... I will have to fix that... No, I can not hold his toes to the fire... I can provide reasonable input to interrupt which ever "Flamming Ducks" he is stomping on currently...

So that you know the servers that are now needed to do the real time persistency checking are of this class of hardware...

Sun Fire X4500 Server

That is the same class as Thumper, which has issues currently...

No, I have not mentioned or am I pushing Donations... I am just acknowledging the efforts of Many that has moved Seti Ahead! Thank You!

Regards

Pappa

Indeed -- with SETI having its problems at the moment, I've shifted cycles over to World Grid and Rosetta for now -- though Einstein and SETI have a long built up lead for me.

LOL....

That much is certain! You could probably take a year or more off from EAH and still have a sizable lead in our EAH class. ;-)

@The Batman:
"If His connection is a problem then so is everyone elses"

I suggest you read again the fragment: "up to the moment MSD crashed," as it contains some importand info.

Anyway, E@H has a new app in place, currently not using any CPU optimizations. WU`s are now like 3-6mb of size minimum, and what`s worse, AMD+Win combo is 20-25% slower than it should be, due to Win Intel compiler`s bug. My barton 1.8ghz krunches for 52-54 hours to get ~430 credits.

Thumper has been assimilated. Its technological distinctiveness has been added to my own.
