Anyhow, I have noticed for the past 4 or 5 days that results usually upload on the first try, reporting units ready to report may take 5 or 10 tries before they go through [keep getting cannot connect/find hostserver] and nothing has been downloaded in that time frame. However, when I look at the "My Computers" page it states that I have 150 units being worked on with one computer and 52 on the other computer [I have 2 hosts]. One has 2 work units and the other 3 work units, NOT 150 units and 52 units. If it says I have 200 units that do not exist on my computer, that is 200 units marked as sent and in use that are neither. Multiply this by all the members, and you have a ton of work units lost in limbo somewhere. It appears that every time I try to connect, it thinks it has sent another workunit or 2 or 3. But they were not sent. I hope that maybe this information helps in resolving the work unit problem. Yes, I have. In fact, I have pasted a page below. They are all listed as new, sent and being worked on. That is why I think this could be a major problem. If the data base thinks these work units are in process, it will not send them out again for some time. Meanwhile, the members keep requesting more work, which gets sent to this limbo, so the clients request more work... etc., etc. so that no progress gets made. I have none of the listed work units on my computer in the list below. But they are listed as if I received them today. Please note the time sent on each, there are clumps seperated by 2 or 3 hours, the times I have tried to get more work. Not sure where you got your information? This is just out: Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the SETI institute, said the Gliese 581 system has in fact been looked at twice before for signs of intelligent life. The first time was in 1995 using the Parks Radio Telescope in Australia; the second time was using the Greenbank Radio Telescope in West Virgina. Both times revealed nothing. “It has been looked at twice, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look at it again,†Shostak said. “And indeed we should because this is the best candidate the solar planet guys have come up with yet.†Shostak said he was “jazzed†by the discovery. “This is pointing to something that in the past has only been an assumption, namely that Earth-sized worlds are not rare,†he said. “We know of only two [planets in the habitable zone]. We know this one and we know our own. But two is better than one.†Shostak said the Gliese 581 system might be looked at again when the new Allen Telescope Array begins operations this summer. “You could say it’s going to the head of the class,†he said. |

Hi Matt, Parkes has not been discussed by a project person so I would prefer to get a response from a project person and not us laymen. They did have plans. I am just wondering whatever happened to those plans and only a project person knows. Any other responses are just speculation. |

Yep. same to me. i finished the last work unit april second, and "My Results" at that time still showed 6 units i was crunching, but these did not show up in boinc manager. so i just did no autostart of boinc at startup and waited till today with loading a new work unit. now i am working on one, but the Results show 4 units i have received (thats not true!!!) so: what happens here??? |

I understand, but Parkes has (if I remember correctly) been mentioned on official project pages. A quick google found this. I didn't search that hard. Note that one issue is funding. I think it's safe to say that the 80-80 rule applies as well. But either way, the current question was "why not give the data recorder a 3 month vacation in Oz while Arecibo is being repainted?" ... and I suspect it is because it'd take too long to ship the recorder and integrate it with a different receiver. Funding too. |

Not sure where you got your information? Interesting article. Note that SETI@Home is not associated with the SETI Institute. |

I wonder was is the real relation between SETI Institute and SETI@home... |

I wonder was is the real relation between SETI Institute and SETI@home... Seti Institute and Seti@home are 2 different entities…but they are very closely associated. Seti Institute and UC Berkeley are building the Allan Telescope Array together. Seti Institute gave UC Berkeley (Seti@home) some of (if not most?) of it’s original “Seed†money to get started. Seti Institute is a major contributor to Seti@home. Seti Institute supports numerous other projects around the world, something like 125+, in the search for ET. |
