That reaction could indicate the employer had other agendas with their staff, despite what the local employment laws and employment conditions state or dictate.

You may well have had a narrow escape from internal things to that employer?

Well, it is one of the many "modern slave companies", and they searched a chemical worker with several extra qualifications, so I was the optimal man for the offered job and they were really glad that I had applied for it (though with a non-ignorable "only day-shift if possible!" note on the application).

If they were so angry, you may have been able to ask for more money. Remember to not sell yourself short. I'm in the chemical business myself and in all honest, good help is very hard to find and companies are willing to pay for it.
