Lately BOING-blah is relatively generous in saying things are not up. Of course we noticed allready, somehow. And than things that are down don't go up, which we all notice. What the comunity lacks is information. At 4:45PM local time just tell us you didn't make it, admit some hardware screwed (It's the hardware, not you) but don't let the project down without any notice. This sticky habbit of 'we're down but you expected that, didn't you' is getting a tad old. Sort it out, give us feedback, with some regards, me. |

>WHY!! Maybe your on-line all the time and/or retired where you have a lot of time, but people that work and/or are on dial-up care. Connecting and trying to upload/download/report takes time. When the system is down and we know it, we don't have to waste out time. That's why the news is important. |

I know these folks are busy, have a life, are struggling with seemingly a rash of hardware failures, however, it would seem that there is a growing perception that the overall project is starting to fall apart. I have a few suggestions that would likely help everyone. Create a web page right off the main page that displays a simple view of the status of the back-end services. To the extent this can be automated would reduce maintenance time. However, an accurate status page should reduce the amount of posts asking whether the back-end services are up. The only place I’ve located release notes to the software is on the message boards on the alpha site. This should be bundled with the applications and/or made available as a link on the download page. |

> Maybe it is just me, but doesn't this say that? > > Home Page It does, but too often it's not updated until well after the back-end is down. If they had a web page that provided just the status of the back-end (e.g. by component) processes that was updated by an automated process we wouldn't have to wait for someone to update the news page. The benefit should be obvious in that people would not need to ask if there is a problem with the back-end servers, they could just look at the status page. An example of something similar that existed in the original s@h can be found here http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/sstatus.html. |

I'm not sure I see your point. Connecting to read news from the front page would take approx. the same amount of time. If they gave an estimate as too when things should be normal again, people don't take it as an estimate - they take it as a final deadline and when that "deadline" is crossed people just mock the staff. It's happened so many times... S@h Berkeley's Staff Friends Club © member |

I'm sorry, but the typical participant in this forum is clearly the proverbial "loose cannon on the deck." ... and I don't understand it. There isn't any money involved. There is no fancy trophy. Processing work-units isn't a path to fame and fortune. But, give 'em an estimate and they'll turn it into a deadline and complain that it's taking too long, or that the management is incompetent, or some equal foolishness. If you don't tell them, they'll complain that they don't know how long it's going to take, that the management is incompetent, or some equal foolishness. Let the Berkeley team enjoy the holiday. |

If just by some very small chance ET shows up in one of the WU's fortune and glory will be dealt out big time. Oh of course fame for 15 minutes to the crunchers. Big money and after dinner speeches for those controlling Seti. I'm not saying they should be working on a holiday and I know money is tight however there is a goldmine at the end of the rainbow. The question is does the rainbow exist. Neil |

I’m no supporter of “No news is good news†but I like “If nobody complaints, nothing gets done†We live in the information age, but Seti@home does not always reflect that. (Since this month pah seems to share that sah vision) And yes ,they can have a holiday, they can take the weekend, a whole week or month, I only wish they would tell us before they do so. :) It can be as simple as "Didn't find the problem, I'll try again tomorrow" "No solution from the Snap , we’re waiting just like you" "Data transfer is taking way long then expected, but we hope to compete it in 2 days", … Some simple word every 3, 4, 5 hours during work hours, correct me if I’m wrong, but that can’t be impossible, can it? |

Norman Hi Norman, I have started a mailing list to try and get news around to people quicker. While it'd be nice, I don't think we __need__ a note that says "not yet" every few hours. We can see that in the BOINC client. Right now, the home page says "we're working on it a bit, but it's a holiday." I also suspect that they're really tired of saying "as soon as we fix 'x' we'll be up" only to find that fixing 'x' made the next problem visible. |

I very much would like everybody to stop complaining. If BOINC is not on the air - so what - in a couple of days they will,... the sun will not stop shining... All this whining and complaining is filling up TOTALY USELESS SPACE. For heavens sake when will most people become really grown up??? The boys in the team I know for sure are doing their utmost... They deserve and have the right to join their families... I trust them in the fact THAT THEY ARE REALLY TRYING TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT. So stop complaining and if you have so much time to spare (or to waste) get yourself a real job. Patience in the end is rewarding. In a scientific project like this, often with limited means or practically no manpower or real governmental support, ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM SHOULD GET OUR FULL RESPECT AND SUPPORT... Be positive, a tap on the shoulder really helps, By all means GET OFF THEIR BACKS !!! Greetings from Belgium ;-)))) |

I can't Wait for this to be all back up. I have 40 Units on this machine, 20 on 2 others and 80 on yet another. Seti will feel my uploading fury when it's all back online. ~Kirby |
