The power of youth 25 years earlier they ripped this one up! Watch the crown going ballistic about 1:40 in. Energy, enthusiasm and interesting arrangement make all the difference in the world. If they can rock it this way I'm in!

So 80s ! Love the hair :)

I totally agree that energy is a large part of what makes or breaks a live performance.

Roxanne had that great reggae/dub edge that made The Police sound so characteristic.
If any of you feel like seeing someone pour copious amounts of energy in his reggae performace have a look at what Toots and the Maytals pull off.
Toots & The Maytals 54-46 Was My Number

As a sidenote : Toots is 60 years old in that clip :)

Yep, Toots is still going strong.
Some friends of mine saw him last summer in the Vancouver area and from what they told me he was exactly like in the vid.

Glad you liked the links.

Pharoah Sanders---->2006 Performance

More info on this show would be welcome. First half is Pharoah and others then about half way thru Buckethead takes over with a ......... talented multi discipline display, is the best way to describe it I think. Very odd but extremely cool!! I'm still kind of stunned! lol

Shawn Phillips---->Discoveries 1988

John Cale---->I love a good Cover ;o)

Area Code 615---->This one doesn't really agree with my musical tastes Nobody! LMAO

I'm not a really big fan but I think they are pretty brave to be willing to alienate a signifigant portion of their fan base. Although their stance will probably gain them a few that wouldn't normally listen to Country/New Country. Which is a good thing I think. I think that more people need to step out of the comfort box and experience all of lifes flavours.

And they looked kinda hot at the Grammy's.

Hello music lovers.
Here is an interesting URL you might like. I found the concept quite clever.

http://www.lastfm.fr/listen/

The general idea is that you input the name of your favorite band and the site will create a playlist of similar artists for you to listen to. Click the little tag below the input box to start the stream. Clever. Your own customized radio station. I like.

Being a proghead I am no stranger to obscure bands and 70s music. I tested the system by putting in stuff like Maneige or Maschera di Cera and the system duly offered me some Gryphon, Magma, Saga and the like.

For registered users there are " I really liked " and " Dont ever play this again " buttons to help the system evolve towards your taste.

The site is in french and it seems to be having bandwidth issues from time to time but it is nonetheless a great way to hear new music.

What a great site!! Sony got something right! Much more mainstream than a lot of what's posted here but it's too good a find not to slap a link up!

Musicbox.Sonybmg

Quality videos and organized by artist and genre. And the sound is fantastic!!

As always, crank it to 11!

Merci bien Francis for posting that site - it does provide a excellent selection orbiting whoever you specify - I deliberately started off with someone I thought might catch them out and she didn't!

Got something ya think I should see or here? Don't be shy POST IT! I love all kinds of music and am always looking for new stuff that I haven't heard.

Hi there Michael!
First of all THANK YOU for restoring the balance between mainstream and off the beaten path. I feel better already!

What can I say about that in the confines of one post? It probably deserves it's own thread! The tag on it says, " Those last 2 minutes are freaking awesome.". That should be ammended to include the FIRST two. An amazing talent for sure! One could make the argument that it was a live precursor to todays Mixing and Mash Ups. I wonder if that Moog(?) was crunching SETI?

Finally had a real good look around Last.FM (here's the english site BTW) and I see that lots of languages are represented there. So in the interest of SETI crunchers/Music lovers around the globe, here goes.

Hablamos Español

Wir Sprechen Deutsch

Parliamo l'italiano

Falamos Português

They also have Group Communities and, yes, SETI and BOINC are represented!

Thanks again Francis Noel!

Sorry for a late reply - I was busy for a while. I'm glad you liked the Curved Air clip - they have been one of my favourites ever since I saw them live twice at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge. Darryl Way studied classical violin before deciding he preferred a slightly less constrained musical career.

Ha ha. The synthesiser was analog and (I gather from elsewhere) a pig to keep in tune.

I saw Sonja Kristina (their lead singer) a few years ago performing in a London pub, with a mixture of old favourites and new material. A very enjoyable evening.
