The Ongoing History of New Music

The OHNM is a radio show broadcast in Toronto, Canada by 102.1FM The Edge (AKA CFNY). The Host, Alan Cross has been broadcasting weekly shows for the last 10(?) years. He covers the offbeat news, hard to find facts and generally strange stories in new music.

Repeat....NEW MUSIC....no Brittany or Jessica or Justin. I know, BOO HOO! But if you are into alternative, punk, new wave, new rock, emo or other types of "not so main stream music", you will love this show.

Thay have 190 shows available online in streaming audio and if your like me (god help ya if ya are!) you'll want to now facts like...All the worlds recorded music could be digitally stored in less than 1 petabyte!..or..Bono, of U2 Fame, got his nickname from a vacuum cleaner!

Check out OHNM and let me know what ya think.

Ishkur's Guide To Electronic Music

It's mainly the history of Dance and Techno orientated but it has a lot of good info (humourously written at times) and allows you to play several samples of each type/style of music (literally hundreds of samples)

It also links to the Digitally Imported Internet Radio stations.

Well worth checking out.

Bad Career Moves

Rare Ramones, VERY early Nirvana.......and thats just the first segment. The edge's brother quits U2, why Elvis Costello never made it big in North America.

> an old friend, Daniel D. Harris (Musician / Artist / Actor) had a Band called the WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND . . . chECk 'iM ouT

Reviews:

“Few of these late-60s pastiches are more fascinating than those of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band...Long considered one of psychedelia’s most original and mysterious bands, it united an unlikely and contentious group of players with wildly differing agendas...” -Chicago Reader

“Other than the likes of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, few, if any bands could match the unpredictability in sound of the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Sundazed celebrates the legend of this ensemble in high style with the reissue of three original albums from 1967-1968 heyday of the band. Captured from original masters and featuring two bonus tracks per release, Part One, Volume 2, and Vol. 3: A Child’s Guide To Good And Evil showcase this eclectic L.A.-based outfit in all its far-out, folk-rock, granny glasses and Nehru jacket glory.” - Naragansett Times

So I know your wondering......"What's Pawly listen to in the car?"....don't lie, I can always tell when ya lie.

Well currently:

Cake - One of my all time favourite bands.
billy talent - A new favourite.
Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Too much fun!
White Zombie - Great for bombing down the highway....watch out for the cops!!!
Joe Satriani - - A guitar GOD!!! hhhhhhhmmmmmm? Ice might like this song for his website.
Vince Guaraldi - Ever wondered who wrote the music for all those Peanuts/Charlie Brown specails? He's the guy. I listen to this when I'm having a bad day. Makes me smile.

An ecclectic list, I know. I get bored easy. And yes I have an in-dash six cd changer in the car!! NICE!

Edit: Just found this one and had to add it, It's the real burnin'up the highway song!! And yes that's Iggy Pop doing the voice over and making a cameo in the video!Black Sunshine

Don't know if this would be your style Pawly...but one of my favorite bands is Ra. They aren't Alternative or Punk, just good rock music. :-)

Hello music lovers.
Here is an interesting URL you might like. I found the concept quite clever.

http://www.lastfm.fr/listen/

The general idea is that you input the name of your favorite band and the site will create a playlist of similar artists for you to listen to. Click the little tag below the input box to start the stream. Clever. Your own customized radio station. I like.

Being a proghead I am no stranger to obscure bands and 70s music. I tested the system by putting in stuff like Maneige or Maschera di Cera and the system duly offered me some Gryphon, Magma, Saga and the like.

For registered users there are " I really liked " and " Dont ever play this again " buttons to help the system evolve towards your taste.

The site is in french and it seems to be having bandwidth issues from time to time but it is nonetheless a great way to hear new music.

Alrighty then! Lets see what we got.

@ Nobody, THE WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND seem like some pretty angry hippies! ;) Some really good guitar work. Was your friend the guitarist?

@ Knightmare, Any Links? I'm having trouble finding the right Ra! Sun Ra comes up quite a bit as does a rapper named Ra in searches.

@ Francis, Very cool link I've added it to my Favorites!

And here's one that was stuck in my head all day!! Soup Dragons

Dan & 'is Brother wrote mostly - Dan was the Main Guitarist - Rhino just Re-Released the old disks 'bout 3-4 Years ago - big hits on the Charts . . .

Dan also wrote 'didleys' - which many bands that got together - from the UK *Invasion* - took the didleys and Produced their 'Sound' and became pretty well known . . . check the site for the bands names - i am sure you'll recognize most of them from the 60's & 70's - they mostly became Chart Breakers etc . . . ps - Dan IS the Guitarists 'Guitarist' and is infamous for 'is licks and even 'is Father / Grandfather are right up there in History too . . .

Here is the only link I could find to them where you could hear some of their music. Let me know if it works...if not, we can figure out something else.

Link works...Listening......!!!!....nice.....I'd call it (if I had to put a classification on it) New metal, maybe progressive rock, but I hate classes...Cool a hard cover of the Police!!! Works for me, KM! It's 6:20 am as I listen and type, really wakin me up!! Got my head bobbin! Thanks, KM!! Thumbs up!

Speaking of the Police, I heard a rumor that they might be doing a reunion tour!!! I'd love that cuz I never got a chance to see them live! If they could put their egos aside and get it together it would be HUGE!

The Police reunion tour is a go as of right now.

The first time they play together will be ( or was...not sure when the show is on TV ) at the Grammy Awards show.

Glad you like that band, Pawly. They are one of m favorites. They recently released a live album that was recorded at a show I was present at. They are an incredible live band. :-)

The show is on Sunday 11th (this coming Sunday!) and it looks like thay will be opening up the night. This calls for a little music!!

Crank it to 11!!

Well that was anti-climactic. Just saw The Police reunited on the Grammy's. Low energy, low key, Zero production value and a bored looking audience. A pretty crappy way to open the show and kick off a supposed world tour. A didn't think Roxanne could be preformed in such a blah manner. Hopefully someone will post concert footage on youtube IF there is a tour, Cuz if that's the way it's gonna be, I'm keeping my dough in my wallet.

You just stated my opinion of The Police from day one.

The power of youth 25 years earlier they ripped this one up! Watch the crown going ballistic about 1:40 in. Energy, enthusiasm and interesting arrangement make all the difference in the world. If they can rock it this way I'm in!
