I feel so unbelievable that in such a professional website I can see "Taiwan" in the list of different countries of the world.I think China and Taiwan should be put together.Since in ancient time,Taiwan was an important part of China,so it is now. What Taiwan to China is what Hawaii to America!Though there is a channel between China and Taiwan, their relationship of mother and son cannot be denied. The feeling that China lose Taiwan is the same as you American lost the United States Department of Defense.I cannot understand why you put China and Taiwan apart, don't you think there is only one China in the world?I suggest that you should take the name of Taiwan and China as a whole. Please remember:TAIWAN IS A PART OF CHINA.IT IS NOT A COUNTRY! |

*yawn* Luckily for the good people of Taiwan, they have the democratic right to disagree with that particularly point of view... Unlike the people of occupied Tibet. |

When the project was started Taiwan was a seperate Country governed by someone else. The fact that it is now part of China has nothing to do with Seti and the search for ET. In point of fact, it is still separate from China... |

If you are just kidding, I think I would forgive you. If you are conscientious, I think you are talking nonsense. Although I am a student, I think I know more history than you. In fact here is a channel between Taiwan and Chinese mainland but as a whole. I have been told that Scot, Welsh and people in other parts of Britain hate British, they want to separate from England, but we Chinese do not especially many Taiwanese hope unity. People in Tibet are live in happy life; we have made the greatest railway in the world for them. And you American said we had nothing to do with Seti and the search for ET. Then you mean you have made a great deal of contribution to this program. If so, I would like to ask you, have you already found ET yet? |

And you American said You are responding to Robert Smith, I presume? If so, he is not American. He is from the U.K. Why is it that you assume if someone disagrees with you, they're automatically American? |

I am sorry that I have made a mistake. The last sentence is to Mr mikey. "If so, I would like to ask you, have you already found ET yet?" I AM from the US and will try and answer that question...we do not think so. In 2002, the last time the actual data was run thru the analysis, we found some signals that were very interesting. Did we find actual PROOF that ET is trying to communicate with the Earth, NO WE DID NOT! Maybe if you put your immense number of computers from the Great Country of China towards the effort we can analyze the data faster. Also maybe if every person in China donated even one single dollar the Project would have enough money to pay for someone to analyze that data today. See part of the problem is that we, you and I, donate our computer crunching power towards a very good idea, Seti. But often we forget that behind the crunching we do, is the infrastructure required to provide those couple hundred thousand workunits per day, the people and computers required to do that. All of those people and computers require money to perform. People need money to buy food and provide for their families, computers require money to pay for upgrades and the day to day internet operations costs etc. It has been reported that Seti requires over $600.00 per day to keep running. Finding ET is not going to be a cheap overnite process. BUT if we all pitch in and work together, thru our crunching and our monetary donations, I believe we can find ET! Will you help? Click on anyones green star to donate money, if you can. |

Um…I think may be I misunderstood you. “The fact that it is now part of China has nothing to do with Seti and the search for ET.†I thought you said we have nothing to do with Seti and the search for ET. If I am wrong, I make an apology to you (my English is not very good!)and I shall invite you to have dinner if you can come to Xinjiang. I am very angry with Robert Smith; we all love our country, aren’t we? So I hope you can take the name of Taiwan and Chinese mainland as a whole, of course Hong Kong, which has already belonged to China for nearly ten years! Answer your question. I am only a senior high school student now, and I have not my own money. After I graduated, I must click on anyones green star to donate money. I have already persuaded some of my classmates join this project. Now I am working hard for the university entrance exam, I only sleep three or fore hours every night because I want to study the astronomy. I believe we can find ET, too! May be we will become good friends! |

Last I saw, China wished that Taiwan was still a part of China, but the people living in taiwan disagree. For those that don't know the history, during the Maoist revolution in China the Nationalists (those opposed to Mao) ended up fleeing to Taiwan. Taiwan has not been governed from China since that time, although China still claims that Taiwan is a state of China. Taiwan insists that it is a separate country. The only reason that Taiwan does not have a seat on the UN is that China won't allow that. There is a disagreement on whether Taiwan is a part of China or not. BOINC WIKI |

There is a disagreement on whether Taiwan is a part of China or not. So the collective "we" have to take this disagreement/argument all over the place, including these boards? What purpose does it serve to bring this to anyone's attention here? Not that I didn't mind the history lesson. |

If China wants Taiwan, then give back Tibet to the Tibetians and remove the Chinese colonizers...never mind they trashed most of the country during Mao's cultural revolution and destroyed much of Tibets cultural heritage in the process. ...and it still continues to this day (Larung Gar, pictured here, was a monastic encampment). The Dahlai Lama will be most pleased to see the backside of the sons of Han. Account frozen... |

Welcome to the Boards Margaret . . . keep working towards your goals, Best of Luck on your Exams . . . and WE shall become good friends . . . ps - try to get a 'little' more sleep ;) (though that's all i've been having since i was very young - and it actually hasn't bothered me - i got an awful lot of work done - simply by 'not' sleeping that much . . .) |

Its a shame that politics get into SETI Look no further than the lead thread post...that door was slammed wide open from the get-go. But this is the Cafe and it is well within bounds...she is more than entitled to her opinion and freedom of expression. However, this thread was originally started over in the Q&A section and was moved by another Mod. Account frozen... |

Hello Margaret, This picture is very famous in North America and Europe, but I am told by many Chinese people that I work with (in Canada) that they have never seen it. I am curious if you have seen this. I mean no disrespect in asking you. Good luck with your studies and get lots of rest! Regards Paul |

Welcome to the SETI boards Margaret from Xinjiang. One of my favorite foods is Chinese. Every time I go to pick it up at my favorite takeaway I don't challenge them about human rights, about the occupation in Tibet, or about their major contribution to Climate Change. I don't often have a chance to debate with a Chinese person. Perhaps it might be worth letting this young lady have her say and then explain to her how wrong a lot of the things are that China are doing, like shooting down that satellite. What was that all about Margaret? flaming balloons |

I don’t know what to say…I did not know so many people disagree with me. I cannot persuade you; but I have a request: why not take the name of Hong Kong and China as a whole? It has already belonged to China for nearly ten years! To nobody, John, Pawly and all who care for me: thank you very much! To Pawly: to tell you the truth, I have never seen it too. To Doqbytes: there is something wrong with the picture and I cannot see it. |

The Taiwan question is very tricky indeed. I'm an Australian and I'm not exactly an expert in the area, but a Taiwanese friend of mine who I respect very much says it's almost too difficult for anyone to work out. He says it depends on who you ask and how you phrase the question determines what the "correct" answer will be. To paraphrase Otto von Bismarck, who was talking about the German province of Schleswig-Holstein which was in a similar position two centuries ago, "Only three people have ever understood this. One is dead, another's insane and I have forgotten." I do think, though, that the people of Taiwan ought to decide this issue. They're the ones who will have to live with it. Anyway, welcome to the boards Margaret. Don't let that fact that your viewpoint is a little unpopular discourage you. Healthy debate is the lifeblood of both democracy and science. |
