I stopped donating. There are certain things I’d like to see, things you had in the past that are just not their anymore, regarding science. Nope, I don’t expect you to cater to what I’d like. But there are many who would like to see the same things as me…science! There are more part-time crunchers than big time crunchers, who produce more results. The number of crunchers has dwindled. Maybe with increase in computer power it’s not that important to have as many people…..I don’t know? All you hear is “please donate†from everyone. It does not matter who says it or who is doing the collecting. There is NO oversight. And I would bet that there is someone who is using these forums to their own advantage! Do you people think that Seti will shut down if there are not donations? You are TOTALLY wrong! Do you think they are building dishes that cost millions of dollars, “ACERES†of dishes…to let it all die or shutdown because they can’t analyze the data? If you do…you need to visit “The SETI INSTITUTE†and look at the “Allen Telescope Arrayâ€Â. If Berkeley can’t handle the analysis they will find someone who can! But, Berkeley can handle the analysis because they are doing this in cooperation with “The Seti Instituteâ€Â. $11.5 million dollars to build the telescopes and they are going to let the data analysis die because of….lets say half a million dollars? In any business there are certain places where the money goes first. Right now the money is going to build the dishes. At some point the money will go to ensuring the data analysis is state-of-the art and ready to keep things going! The signals we are hoping to find have taken possibly millions of years to get here. That is why the analysis is not as important (at this day in time) as the need to start recording the information coming into the telescopes. That is what people don’t understand and why everyone feels SETI “seems†to be under funded. The analysis can wait. As long as the data has been recorded…….the analyzers (YOU) will always be on the back burner~! The data can be analyzed any time. A missed signal…is gone forever! I’m becoming a “Crystalize†fan! http://www.seti.org/site/pp.aspx?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=179290 |

Over the weekend I kicked over a few more dollars ($125). I figured they needed some help, since I went and ordered me a new E6400 Core 2 Duo. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

Evening Everyone As of [26 Jan 2007 1:14:42 UTC] $109570.92 or 20.3% of the goal. I do have to note that over the last couple of days there have been no Donations. A reminder that Operations (including Internet Connectivity) cost roughly $630+/day. So beside Server Issues just keeping the door open is Important. That would buy time to find other resources if they can be found. Many people have asked about what is happening in the background one of the most informative posts was done by Matt in the Blog's So where's the science..?. or in Kevin's Blog The Outsider's Inside View So once again, we all need to look to see what each of "us" can do, that is all we can ask. Pappa Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Hi, I don't think I have ever posted on the forums, but I would just like to say I have an 80GB SATA2 HD I can donate after Feb. 1st. I will mail it out when I recieve the new one I am ordering. I am doing some upgrades so this shouldn't be a problem. I may also have an 80GB ATA133 HD to donate if you take EIDE drives. Let me know about that, my email is davidgrankowski@sbcglobal.net. |

Donate Hardware For most Users that are not Technophiles or Administrators this gets a bit tough in a hurry... It does give you and idea of some of the complexities you avoid when you call you local or major computer dealer and say "I want a computer." For most Users it becomes simplier to spend a few minutes to Donate and let Seti sort it out... In the background I have a "partial" list of items needed (that I can share). I am sure that someone might have one or two used items laying around collecting dust. What is needed is to replace actually three servers. The hardest being kryten and it handles Uploads/Downloads and other processes. The information I have is that it should be at least 2.6Ghz H/T Intel Xeon with 6gig of minimum... and needs to be able to handle a fiberchannel card (PCI or PCI-E existing drives). If a stornger server for klaatu or koloth can be built then some process might be able to migrated that would ease some of the other issues that have recently plauged Seti... Now, It gets tougher as a Server Boards are optimized hardware wise to handle all the stuff that never gets in the way of a User on a Workstation... Silly things Input/Output wise, like network connections, drive mappings, and handing processes to the CPU(s), * klaatu: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 2 GB RAM) * koloth: Sun D220R (2 x 440MHz Sparc, 1 GB RAM) * kryten: Sun E3500 (6 x 400MHz Sparc, 6 GB RAM) One at a time, minimum requirements.. * klaatu - a P4 2 Ghz (H/T) Xeon Processer with 2 gig of RAM... * koloth - a P4 2 Ghz (H/T) Xeon Processer with 2 gig of RAM... * kryten - Dual P4 2.6 (Intel) Xeon Processer with 6 gig of RAM... Or Dual Operton 2.4 (Model 250, 1 meg L2) with 6 gig of RAM expandable. To an extent, newer 64bit Processers and Motherboards are needed (for the future)... 1. We have found an Intel Server board (SE7500WV2) that is a socket 603 that will support up to (2) 2.8 GHZ Xeons. What are need is two CPU's of the same speed. Intel Part Numbers 2.8 Ghz BX80532KC2800DU 1 rack unit size 2.8 Ghz BX80532KC2800D Full height 2.6 Ghz BX80532KC2600D Full height 2.6 Ghz BX80532KC2600DU 1 rack unit size 2. RAM it gets a bit tougher in that most servers run what is call ECC (error correction) and Registered... It has conflicting information about the system board in that it would handle up to 12 gig of RAM... It this is truly the case it could build a machine that could replace kryten and have room to grow a bit. Kingston Value RAM for the board 1 gig sticks... Kingston ECC, Reg 1gig 3. That last things that I will let "slip" is drives to expand for what is need in the not too far near future. These would be Sata II drives to fill where Uploads/Downloads need to happen... The need is for at least 6 to 8 of the same brand and size... If I were to go look at what I would buy on the the open market which gave the best value... I come up with this for an idea. What I would pick at this point would be Western Digital Sata II... Or if you want a specific link... Sata II 8mb buffer 160gig Those are about $51.xx each... or Sata II 8mb buffer 200gig those are about $70.xx each... Please Note: This does not recomend that this Company that sells them only this price... You could go to your local computer store and purchase a new one that will do fine... Or there are many sites that you can get comparible deals. Now how to coordinate all this? Hmmmmmm Many could say would they are not a "Raptor"... For most this is not a concern, in an array activity is spread across many spindles not a single drive thus throughput does not become an issue... IF You can help with Hardware, once again I give my email address to help sort what and where... al.setiboinc (at) gmail.com replace the (at) with the @ symbol or Shift and the number 2 Pappa Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

OK - I heard back and no one claimed the Servers from this Bankrupt Company. My contact is finding out when I will be allowed to go in and: 1.) Check out the hardware and software on the three available servers. 2.) Best match up which one will work as a replacement for Kryten. 3.) Change passwords to logout safely and shut down servers. 4.) Grab servers 5.) Grab Rack Mount Battery Backup 6.) Meet with Eric and deliver replacement for Kryten and the APC Rackmount. 7.) Go home... (Wife is scheduled for Carpal Tunnel Surgery on the 5Th.) Eric, Please contact Knightmare and get my Phone and e-Mail info. so we can talk... Thanks. Later, TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Eric / Pappa, Can one of you send me an email at work today before 3:30PM EST or so with the shipping address for the server board / RAM? I've got it boxed and ready to ship, but I dutifully left the printout of the shipping address you sent to my home account... at home. Doh! If not, it's alright... I'll just staple the printout to my forehead and ship it tomorrow. Yes, that was a joke. :) Thanks, Adam Computer nut, Distributed Computing freak, Jeeper and Dodge Ram driver. Pappa, Eric, & Matt, Latest news. I heard back from my contact about an hour and a half ago. He said that while no one claimed the servers, (nor any other equipment in the server room), of this Bankrupt company; the attorney's in charge have not yet given him the go ahead to have me come up. It will be another couple of weeks. Not to worry; there's no backing out, I have my claim on the equipment and no one else can take the servers nor the backup battery. I just have to wait for the all clear to get up there and appropriate the battery, etc. Once I have the final go ahead I will post here that I am on my way up. Once I'm up there I will coordinate with Eric or Pappa. From that point I will take said equipment to Berkeley to meet with either Eric or Matt, or both to deliver the goods. I just hope that Matt can keep Kryten together until I can appropriate the equipment. Eric, if you have any questions please call me at home. Pappa has my information and can get you my home phone number and e-Mail. Thank you for your continued patience. I will make this work, and look forward to coordinating all of this with you. Take Care, TimeLord04 Have TARDIS, will travel... Come along K-9! Join Calm Chaos |

Matt & All, With all due respect I would pose this concern...below is a posting where a significant piece of equipment was offered. At the end of it there is a mention that your closet doesn't even have the power needed to run the equipment that would help the situation with Kryten. I **'ed the critical part down below... My question is how is new hardware going to help when you can't support it with the power needed??? I think the "HP enterprise xlr 8500 8 cpu xeon 700 mhz" is a heck of a gracious offer of hardware. If people are offering $/Hardware and are being rebuffed with "We don't have the power to run it"--that's going to turn a lot of donators off-it would turn me off pretty quickly. What can YOU do to fix this power issue so that the donations of hardware people offer would even work??? Hi Matt, I have noticed that your kryten computer has had some issues. I would be willing to donate an HP enterprise xlr 8500 8 cpu xeon 700 mhz computer to replace kryten. I have had this unit for six months without any problems what so ever. If you are interested please let me know. The only thing that I require is that the computer be named seti.usa. P.S. the unit has 4 geg memory and twin 16 geg 10,000 scsi drives, and needs 220 vac to run. Dr. Dan. ---- Hi Dr. Dan, I will make sure that this gets brought up at the systems meeting. Eric --- But then the folowing message... *****Um, I just noticed the 220 VAC. We don't have 220 in the server closet, and I doubt the building manager would run it there for us. (This building was very poorly designed when it comes to the requirements of research or computer equipment.) Eric ***** |

Blurf As you said all... I will add a bit, as I went to lookup the HP xlr 8500 came up with a HP Lxr 8500 that could be the Server in question. After having dealt with servers over the years and replacement power supplies know that finding a 110/120 used/swapable power supply could be an issue... As I recall the last power issue took about three months and a couple of unplanned outages (they had to power down the whole building)... Now for memory to get it to just 6 gig if it can do that, many machine of the era are very limited in the in "how much" RAM and type that can be placed in the system, have not found the spec sheet that would say what the Max is or type of Server Memory. So at a point in time was asked If a Dell 6350 (4 proc Xeon) could be upgraded to support an email gateway... By the time RAM and new drives were priced it came to $15.00 less to purchase a new dual Xeon Server... So if everyone read the Donate Hardware II threads there were some basic guidelines... As I mentioned this could become replacing obsolete computers with slightly less obsolete computers... Wait until the specs for the server can be determined, that will tell the story... Regards Pappa Matt & All, Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |
