Tried running 4.08 based on some of the good reports posted. However, it always locks up when tring to tranfer work. Running Windows 98SE.

Cannot remove the software. Gets an error during uninstall and leaves installed. Will have to get rid of the application directory in order to reload the previous version of SETIATHOME.

Based on this trial, will continue to run the reliable SETIATHOME software until the problems with BOINC are completely resolved.

Just an FYI:

Running 4.07 here... it is the most stable for me.... I hear 4.09 is coming shortly and should fix some/all of the hang problems... but have no confirmation of that. The 'hang' is a known issue.

I am sticking w/ 4.07 for now... it is most reliable I've used and read reports on.

I am about to try and see what happens with Linux 64.

I'm running 4.06 and it seems that applications are exiting early for no reason. At first I thought it was LHC because it only happened with LHC WUs. The first WU I returned was marked invalid so I was thinking that the early exiting might be the cause. I disconnected from the project, which left only SETI. This morning SETI did the exact same thing. So it now looks like a 4.06 issue - hopefully the *** DEVELOPERS *** (just getting their attention) are aware :)

WILL THE DAMN DEVELOPERS PLEASE HAVE THE INSTALL PROGRAM OF BOINC 4.05 DETECT THE OS VERSION OF THE CPU, AND HENCE REFUSE TO INSTALL BOINC 4.05 UNDER WINDOWS98, IN ORDER TO HEED YOUR OWN POSTING ON NEWS ARCHIVE PAGE, AUGUST 30, 2004 (http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/old_news.php)SAYING:
"August 30, 2004
We are investigating the Win98 hang/crashing issues in this Thread Please check it out for any updates.
NOTE: This bug puts your machine in a state that causes you to reset your machine in order to be able to use it, this in turn can cause disk corruption. We recommend that you hold off executing BOINC on Win98 and WinME until this issue is resolved.
"
I RESENT THAT I WAS ABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL A VERSION WHICH YOU KNOW CAUSES PROBLEMS, AND YET YOU ARE ABLE TO WRITE WARNINGS ABOUT IT, BURIED DEEP IN YOUR WEBSITE, YET ARE INCAPABLE OF NOTING IT ON YOUR DOWNLOAD PAGE OF BOINC FOR WINDOWS, AND HAVE NOT MODIFIED YOUR WINDOWS INSTALLER TO REFUSE TO INSTALL UNDER THE 98 OS! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FOR YOUR OR ANY OTHER DEVELOPERS.
FURTHERMORE I EXPECT THAT FOR ALL FUTURE VERSIONS RELEASED, YOU WILL MAKE IT DEVELOPER POLICY TO MODIFY THE INSTALLERS FOR ALL OS RELEASED VERSIONS OF BOINC, TO PREVENT THE INSTALLER FROM RUNNING IF IT DETECTS OPERATING SYTEM VERSIONS OR OTHER CONDITIONS WHICH ARE KNOWN BY YOU TO CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH THAT OPERATING SYSTEM.

Instead of criticising people, why dont you just upgrade your version.

I have had 4.08 working for a few days now on two machines on a coax LAN
and I dont need to critise and expect people to
raise the spoon to my mouth so I can get it working...

Robert,
Take a chill pill dude. :-)
You have been around for 4 years on this project should know that, you get alot more throught positive interaction instead of:

>>I RESENT THAT I WAS ABLE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL A VERSION WHICH YOU KNOW >CAUSES PROBLEMS, AND YET YOU ARE ABLE TO WRITE WARNINGS ABOUT IT, BURIED DEEP >IN YOUR WEBSITE, YET ARE INCAPABLE OF NOTING IT ON YOUR DOWNLOAD PAGE OF BOINC >FOR WINDOWS, AND HAVE NOT MODIFIED YOUR WINDOWS INSTALLER TO REFUSE TO INSTALL >UNDER THE 98 OS! THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FOR YOUR OR ANY OTHER >DEVELOPERS.
>FURTHERMORE I EXPECT THAT FOR ALL FUTURE VERSIONS RELEASED, YOU WILL MAKE IT >DEVELOPER POLICY TO MODIFY THE INSTALLERS FOR ALL OS RELEASED VERSIONS OF >BOINC, TO PREVENT THE INSTALLER FROM RUNNING IF IT DETECTS OPERATING SYTEM >VERSIONS OR OTHER CONDITIONS WHICH ARE KNOWN BY YOU TO CAUSE PROBLEMS WITH .THAT OPERATING SYSTEM.
:-(

We all are walking hand in hand with the "teething Pains" Seti is going through. I know most people are upset when they write in these boards with problems, and they vent here.
A suggestion to the Developers would go alot further then Demands. You do have a good point, and in the right context I am sure it will be taken aggressively.

Have A Great Day And A Better Tommorrow.!!

Regards,

Sometime problems don't surface untill the public is using it, just look at Microsoft with all there resources, they take years to get OS or applications to the public and still has they aren't without bugs.
how many programers work for MS, How may work on the boinc project?

Small point of order - it is annoying when people dismiss BOINC and SETI's problems are "teething troubles". BOINC was announced on 22nd June this year - almost 3 months ago. Teeth do not take 3 months to come through. The problems should now be referred to as "ongoing" as in "BOINC and SETI have ongoing problems". It's way past the teething stage.

And SP2 for windows indicates, what?

Bottom line is that we have a software system. Software systems have so many degrees of freedom that they are very nearly untestable. I have 6 computers running BOINC now, and the program is not crashing, results are being made and projects are getting the fruits of the labor.

So, I would still class the problems as minor and teething. No one has attempted to do a multi-project distributed computing framework. So this is new terratory for all of us. When I look at the capabilities as demonstrated by cp.net and SETI we have long work unit run times and high data traffic response rates. BOINC is basically handing them both. This is pretty amazing stuff.

I love your sense of humour.A little more of this is needed to DEBUG the tensions out here ! Another Mug of tea would help as well.
I also sympathise with the comments previously made but surely we all have to bear with it and be patient. With a new and complicated project like this, there are bound to be problems. As someone has already said "It is pretty amazing stuff".
Patience is a virtue, as they say.
One thing I would ask of the developers is better communication via the homepage and why not offer 4.07 instead of 4.05.
I am running 4.07 on win ME with no problems, so surely this would be a better alternative for all pre xp users ??

O.K. Long thread, lets see if this was answered.

Win98SE machine, crunches fine. As soon as the boinc tries to access the scheduler, it stops responding. It does nothing until I CAD. Has this been answered?

I'd read on, but after about 40 posts, I got tired of looking. :D

This is a known problem...some claim that if you leave the machine alone it will recover by itself...I got tired of waiting after 40 minutes. I did not see the posts untill after I had detached and reattached the SETI project...so I lost all my WUs. There are rumors that 4.09 will fix this...no official word yet.

I let mine sit all night with no change, the CPU is maxxed out at %100, and it isn't doing anything. This happens only when it tries to connect to the scheduler. It crunches fine however, as long as I make sure it doesn't try to connect.

I've gone ahead and built 4.09 and it is in Alpha right now.

http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/boinc_alpha/download

If everything goes well, we'll be updating the public project on Friday or so.

Copy and paste this link into your browsers address bar then scroll down to
boinc 4.07 windows, and click on this link.
You will see there is also 4.08 windows, and the latest 4.09 windows. I'm still with 4.07 as this is running fine with win me. You could try 4.09 but miss out 4.08 as I see some reports of problems with this version.
I hope this is of help.
Paul.

Thanks Rom, I have downloaded 4.09 and at first I thought oh,oh here we go again...but it responded and seems to be fine. So far I have downloaded 6 WUs. We may have a winner here.
