I just noticed some strange errors in my messages area. Yes, I am running Chicken's enhanced app on this machine.

Nothing on the front page or the "Tech news" either. I checked before writing this....

Hello!

Seti Beta use now V5.17

"normal" Seti use V5.15

(Windows)

Maybe you must check your app_info.xml ?

Greetings!

Hello!

Seti Beta use now V5.17

"normal" Seti use V5.15

(Windows)

Maybe you must check your app_info.xml ?

Greetings!

Notice the messages I posted. They are NOT for Beta.

Messages in the log file for Beta would look more like this:

8/4/2006 1:50:32 PM|SETI@home Beta Test|Resuming task 02ap05aa.12805.896.634652.3.235_1 using setiathome_enhanced version 517

app_info.xml is the "standard" version from the distribution, and does not mention the 5.17 anywhere that I can see.

In the app_info file it would look like this.....

<version_num>517</version_num>

I seem to remember that Crunch3r released some app_info files that covered every possible version number from 5.00 to 5.19 which may cause problems in this case. At the time I thought it was not wise but he didn't change it.

On second thought it should not matter unless Seti Beta is using the exact same directory as the normal Seti project. The two projects SHOULD be in different directory's and thus not use the same app_info file.

Something is screwed up... after getting 5.17 from Seti Beta I've gotten nothing but errors on Seti.

I'm using Chicken's optimized app as well. But each project is in a separate folder so it shouldn't matter, right?

I may be wrong but it's beginning to look like the two projects Seti Enhanced and Seti Beta do not play well together.

Both ai5000 and nick, exit BOINC completely, then restart it.
Now post the messages from your Messages tab in BOINC Manager. All of them, please.

Still not sure what is going on here....I finished the workunit that machine was working on, then reset the project. Same behavior. I detached from [main] SETI and reattached. It downloaded the [stock] 5.15 app and another workunit. I reinstalled Chicken's optimized version [in the regular SETI directory only]. It is currently crunching on the one it got. I have about 5 "ghost" units on that machine too...

Only time will tell how that will work.....

Here is my logfile...it starts when I restarted BOINC after [re]installing Chicken's app.....

Thats really odd. With running Beta and here, I also run Chickens app on main SETI. I've downloaded 3 Beta WU's, 5.17, and they are happily crunching along, as well as my main SETI.

Well, I just wound up getting a 5.17 enhanced wu here. I modified the app_info.xml of Chickens just to see if in fact it would download one, and it did. This WU here is the 5.17. Will have to see if it will crunch ok with Chickens app and report ok.

I believe what you are seeing is just BOINC reporting the highest version in the app-info file. This was noticed with Crunch3r's appinfo which listed versions up to 5.19 and all wu's claimed they were 5.19. There is no such thing as a 5.15 or 5.17 work unit. They are all the same work units. It's just that boinc reads the app info file to get the version that it should report. If you have correctly listed Chicken's app in the app info file and marked it as 5.17 then that is what will be used to crunch it but it will report as 5.17. The info printed in the actual result returned will contain the correct version number in the stderr section but the version in the listing will be wrong.

Well, just to see what happens, I deleted the 5.17 in the app_info.xml, and got this:

8/4/2006 7:07:29 PM|SETI@home|State file error: no application version setiathome_enhanced 517
8/4/2006 7:07:29 PM|SETI@home|Can't handle workunit in state file

[edit]
I'm sure it deleted the WU simply because there was no app for it any longer. I'm still playin around with it just to see what happens.

And yet another edit:

Now that I erased the 5.17 info from the app file, this is what I get when I request more work:

What's happened is you downloaded the work units and they've been keyed to run with that version. Edit the app-info and add the 5.17 back in and finish crunching the work you have but tell it no new tasks until you get those crunched. then edit the file again to put it back to normal. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's just tagged the work units to use that specific version (whether it's a real version or not. The app-info file is telling it what to do right now.)

Funny thing tho, is the other 5 WU's I got are tagged 5.15, and still happily crunching along. I never seen it do this before. I'm still kinda dumb founded. LOL

I have set Seti to No new work to finish the 5.15 I have and then I'll remove Chicken's app and see what happens.

And I think Chicken soon will have an app for those.

You probably still have 5.15 listed in your app-info. If so it will still crunch the ones it downloaded and tagged for that version, but it won't crunch the others until you put 5.17 back into the file. If it's not got an application listed in the file it can't crunch the wu's.

The reason for this is due to the fact that the servers can send out different versions of work units and the app-info file can be used to specify a specific application to crunch each type of work unit. This was done during the conversion from normal SETI to SETI Inhanced. While there were still regular work units available they would be crunched with version 4.11 or an optimized app for that version. If the server had Enhanced wu's then it would download them. But now that all old work units are gone, there's only "Enhanced" work units and any version of the Enhanced application can crunch them. However the enhanced app could not handle pre-enhanced wu's nor could the 4.11 app handle an Enhanced wu.

Hmm. Well, As fuzzy said, I'm gonna run my WU's dry, Im gonna remove Chickens app, do a reset, and go from there and see. Just kinda odd that all of a sudden this starts happening out of the blue.

Ok, one other explanation...
I've read in some posts in Beta about BOINC getting confused with normal SETI and BETA. Seems that it doesn't like the two different versions running simultaneously. T think there's a fix for it by using app-info files for both projects, but I'm not sure. I notice both of you are beta testers and that could be the explanation.

I am running Linux so I'm still running 5.12 for Linux. Seems like the only version that had problems and needed upgeading was the Windows versions.
