Message 382498 - Posted: 30 Jul 2006, 19:00:00 UTC

I just upgraded to the new McAfee SecurityCenter on two machines amd now on one machine the BOINC Manager cannot connect to the BOINC Client (localhost) machine.

This machine is running Boinc as a user task (starts on login). However, another machine has just been updated with the same McAfee SecurityCenter and it connects to the Boinc Clinet with no problem. This 2nd machine runs Boinc as a service instead of a login process.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Make sure you allow Boinc.exe, Boincmgr.exe and Boinc.scr to use TCP port 31416 on the localhost computer. Else set these numbers up in your firewall software.

I have the same problem. When I select computer, it always responds that the connection failed and that the BOINC Manager cannot connect to a client. I have disabled all the McAfee protections and the windows firewall with no better results. I spent 2 hours on 2 online chats with McAfee Support. They insist it's nothing to do with their products. But it began after I installed Internet Security 8. When it checked my computer or did an automatic update it reset the POP 3 server to a 127... number which prevented me from getting emails. So I think Mcafee changed something somewhere. I've been doing SETI for about 6 years, have thousands of WUs and 36,000 hours in the old SETI. Been doing the BOINC version since they turned off the old one. Only had a problem one other time. I think it was a similar problem, but it somehow miraculously corrected itself after I increased the reporting interval
I'd better re-install McAfee or stay offline.

Any ideas?

It still didn't work even after I disabled the McAfee and Windows firewalls.

I have the very same probleem, but I don't have McAfee. I have disabled all firewall activity and anti-virus and still cannot connect to Localhost. I suspect it is possibly a Microsoft malicious software update that I downloaded before I noticed the connection failing.

I would roll back to the version I had before. Is that an option for you?

I've exhausted my limited knowledge on the subject, tried all McAfee's suggestions but still can't get the local host to connect or the BOINC Manager to connect to a BOINC client.

I'm almost ready to give up on SETI after about 7 years of participation.

Can't revert to the McAfee version I had earlier. They deleted my account on that issue.

I tried downloading the BOINC software again, but that didn't work either.

What if you uninstall BOINC through Add/Remove programs, then reboot the computer and then reinstall BOINC to the same directory you had it before. Does it on startup provoke any messages from your firewall?

You can also try it the other way around, by uninstalling McAfee, rebooting, reinstalling McAfee, rebooting etc.

But I would only do the later if I had a hardware firewall built in in my router for internet.

Steven,

I can't figure out exactly what you have done so far and what are you trying to do.
It sounds like you have downloaded and installed BOINC Manager successfully.
This by itself is not enough to start crunching SETI@Home immediately.

Are you trying to attach BOINC Manager to SETI@Home?

If so, please describe step-by-step how you are attempting to connect BOINC Manager to the SETI@Home project, for example, "I click on the Tools menu, and select Attach to Project"

Yup - similar problem here. Just upgraded to the new McAfee SecurityCenter and now my computer cannot connect. Firewall is set to allow full access for Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe (I don't use the screensaver as it is incompatible with my ATI video). Added TCP open port 31416 in firewall settings. Still can't connect.

Thanks fo the reply.

If I uninstalled BOINC would I lose all my work units and credits? No,of course not. That was a stupid question.

I'm still trying to find out how to "allow Boinc.exe, Boincmgr.exe and Boinc.scr to use TCP Port 3146 on the local host computer," as I was advised to do by, I think, you? Where do I gain access to that port setting and how can I change them to allow those connections and keep them out of the firewall?

You're talkin to a non-computer person here. I only know how to use Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Illustrator, Publisher, Photoshop, Picasa, etc..

Getting into the Advanced settings makes me nervous, since I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm afraid I'll unwiitingly change something I'd never be able to find again to fix it.

Sincerely,
Steve Gaber

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the time youve taken to assist me.

The message says "Boinc Manager is not curretnly connected to a Boinc client." Yesterday I was able to click on File/ Select Computer, which I did, then clicked on Local Host and OK. But now the files tab only has "exit, nothing else. The "Select Computer" function is located in the Advanced tab. When I select the Computer/Local Host, it tries weakly to connect, but then sends a message that "Boinc Manager is not able to connect to a client, do you want to try again?" Trying again is no help. Clicking on the Tools tab gives me the Attach to Project. The other choice in tools is Account Manager, but that gives me the ame error box. Chosing Select Computer gets me back to the same windows as before, telling me BOINC cannot casking me to select Local Host.

This is makin me feel stupid.

But I do appreciate you tryin to help.
Sincerely,
Steve Gaber

Yesterday I upgraded to the new McAfee Security Center. As soon as I rebooted I got the message "BOINC manager can not connect to BOINC client".

I have reinstalled BOINC, but it did not fix the problem.

I turned off the firewall, but it did not fix the problem.

I turned on the firewall and added BOINC as an exception, bit it did not fix the problem.

All other programs on my PC see to connect to the internet just fine.

I will keep checking back to see if anyone figures this out.

Ports for V5.4.9
boinc.exe needs internet access on ports 80 and 443 and local access (127.0.0.1) on ports 31416.
boincmgr.exe, boinccmd.exe and boinc.scr need local access on ports 31416.

JoeSam and Phreakin:

I'm sorry you're having the same connection problems I'm having. However, I'm glad I ain't the only one. I'll bet there are LOTS of people who give up on SETI because of such problems.

Steve

I just joined yesterday and I am having the exact problem. I cannot even run the computer test on the initial start up of the program. I also upgraded to the new McAfee Security Center three days ago. Hopefully someone will figure this out.

Hi Steve,
It sounds like you have BOINC running, but haven't actually attached to the SETI@Home project yet.
BOINC Manager is a program that can schedule science apps on a workstation, but you need to connect to each project separately.

Try this to attach the BOINC Manager to the SETI@Home project:
Your computer will need to be connected to the internet in order for this to work.

1) Start BOINC Manager
2) Pull down the Tools Menu
3) Highlight and click on the "Attach to Project" menu item
4) The "Attach to Project" dialog will appear
5) Click on the "Next >" button
6) In the Project URL text box, paste the SETI@Home's project's URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
7) BOINC will attempt to contact the SETI@Home project
8) Enter your SETI@Home userid (i.e. your email address), and your password (the same one you used to log into this forum) and press "Next >"
9) BOINC will begin downloading the SETI@Home science application and start running some benchmarks on your workstation. Later on, it will begin downloading Work Units and start crunching them.

At this point, SETI@Home is running on BOINC.
The default settings work best for users who have a continuous internet connection, i.e. broadband, DSL, Cable modem, ISDN, etc.

I've never played with a system on dialup modem, so I can't help if you have that.

Oh yeah, one more thing: Today is Tuesday, so the server that sends out the WU's is down for maintenance.

If BOINC is able to download the SETI@Home science app, but can't connect to the server right away, that's fine.

Just leave it running, and eventually when the databases come back up, it will start downloading and crunching away.

Hi guys,

I found this solution on another thread, and it works for me (sorry, for some reason I can't find that thread again - boo me).

Go to Start . . . Run . . . "C:\\Program Files\\BOINC\\boinc.exe"

The command window will then need to be closed manually, but otherwise this solves my connection problem.

I don't know if it's related, but I used to be able to start boinc.exe using a shortcut to BOINC manager (boincmgr.exe would start boinc.exe as well). If I try to start this way now, it won't connect to localhost. If I run boinc.exe first, I can then run boincmgr.exe, and everything seems to be fine.

I hope this helps.
