I keep getting an error when I try to install the latest version of Boinc. The installer keeps asking for Boinc.msi. When I point the installer to the directory, it says the version is incorrect. ???? ![]() ![]() |

Make sure you have the latest Microsoft Installer (download it using Windows Update). Reboot once you've got it installed. Re-download BOINC and try again. That usually solves the problem. |

I went to M$ and downloaded & installed the new installer thing, but still no-go for installing the latest version of Bionc 5.4.9. My system keeps asking that I locate Bionc.MSI and when I do, it says that version is incorrect. Oh well, I'll run this until it becomes obselete, then I'll be done too after 7 years. Bionc has been nothing but a pain in the @#$ anyways. They should have stayed with the old SETI. I just wanted to help in the search, not become a programmer. ![]() ![]() |

Use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to get rid of the old BOINC.msi file. Then install 5.4.9 Are you first uninstalling the old version of BOINC, through Add/Remove programs? If you aren't, try that first. And they couldn't have stayed with the old Seti, for a couple of reasons. |

I just wanted to help in the search, not become a programmer. Well, that's your choice. Personally, I've been using BOINC for a few years now and have not had one single problem on any of the 20+ systems I've installed it on. I've even had non-tech friends install BOINC on their systems without issue as well. Before you think the above is bragging or a putdown, please take note that my intention of divulging this information is to simply let you know that it's usually user error or overclocking/heat issues that have made BOINC a nightmare for most people. BOINC itself, despite what people have claimed, is quite stable and runs well on most systems without needing a computer degree. If you really wanted to help in the search and still wanted them to stick with the old SETI, then you'd no longer be able to help (and if you kept up to date with their information, you'd know that). See Ageless's reply for link to the information about SETI Classic's demise. I certainly hope that Ageless's suggestion to clean up the Windows Installer helps and you can continue with us to find E.T.I. |

I can install/uninstall others programs, just not Boinc. My system isn't overclocked either, besides my problem isn't stability(I love how people DON'T READ): I can't update the client to the latest version. Also I never said it wasn't stable "ONCE you got it running". And here I thought Trolls were reserved for newsgroups. ![]() ![]() |

Bunky, reinstall the original version, then try to install the new version. |

Ahh, that's the first time I've ever been called a troll. Quite funny. Even funnier that I've been trying to help you and you even thanked me initially, and now you're calling me a troll. Usually trolls don't try to help people at all, they usually just like to stir the pot and that's it. Anyway, I never said you had your system overclocked (I did read, perhaps you missed the fact that I was just letting you know when it's caused problems, so perhaps taking your own advice about reading is a good idea here). What I *DID* state was that BOINC works and when it doesn't, it's usually something unique with the user's machine. Otherwise, why does BOINC install on every other Windows system but not yours? (That's rhetorical, to get you thinking. The only way to solve this is to put the person into troubleshooting mode.) How about manually deleting the entire BOINC folder in \\Program Files\\BOINC, deleting the startup to BOINC Manager in the startup group, using that utility that Ageless suggested and rebooting, then re-launching the BOINC installer. Does that help? |

It will not get you better help by calling other people (who you never met before) names that you do not want to be called either. If mmciastro's post doesn't help, then try the following: - For now put the Seti project (and any other project you have) to No New Tasks/No New Work. - Run your cache dry. Report all results. - Exit BOINC. - Navigate to your \\BOINC\\ directory. - Make a copy of your account_*.xml files and write them to another directory for safekeeping. - Delete your whole BOINC folder by hand (make sure it is out of the recycle bin as well). - Use regedit to open the registry and delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley - Delete BOINC.msi in C:\\WINDOWS\\Downloaded Installations (can be more than one, check all subdirectories. - Delete BOINC.scr in C:\\WINDOWS\\ Reboot the computer. Install BOINC to another directory, preferably on another partition or physical harddrive. When installed, exit it. Copy the account_*.xml files back from where you had them for safekeeping. Restart BOINC. |

I ended up manually deleting all references & files to Boinc/Seti on my hard drive & then repeating the process in my register(Very time consuming). Then I was able to install the new version of Boinc. So I guess I'm good until the next version is released and I have to do it all over again. I can only imagine the troubles I'd have if I use this PC for something other then Seti. ![]() ![]() |

Very sorry to hear that it was time consuming. Hopefully, with the clean up that you did, you won't have to do it again next time (a little house cleaning goes along way). |

I think Boinc installed OK, and attached to SETI, but nothing is happening. There's no SETI screen saver, and under Projects, it shows 0.00 work has been done. |

Sorry for the troll thing, heat of the battle you know (me vs computer software). Everytime boinc changes I have to play this game and it gets old. Have a great day! ![]() ![]() |

I think Boinc installed OK, and attached to SETI, but nothing is happening. There's no SETI screen saver, and under Projects, it shows 0.00 work has been done.@MIKE FROM CANMORE It seems to be working because you completed and returned one WU already. See Your account result page. A WU is waiting to compare the result with other users that got the same WU to validate your result and issue credit. A closer examination of the result shows an overflow error for this WU. Unfortunately it looks like you hit on a bad WU (veru noisy) and are not likely to get credit for this one. Please post content of the Message tab so we can check if your system is having problems processing the WUs. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |
