I guess Matt that this is where you do not understand the meaning of Team. And we saw no exodus from our team during the past several weeks, in fact we have gained membership, and our daily crunching continues to grow. The reason we were singled out for the Wall Street Journal - well who knows,, maybe the reporter reconized in our team something that is not in other teams... Team work, and goals. Of course we come to the aid of our teammates. This thread was not started to end up negative, but it seems that we have childern in our midst. Matt get a life, no need to act like a child and respond so negative. Remember - you do it for science not credits, btw, if it is for the science and not credits, why do you include your stats on your signature ????? |

[ Because Matt is the "Anti-AzWoody" I don't include my stats, and never bothered to find out how to do it! :) In reality, while this thread was started about seti.usa, I do think that the project director (Dr Dave) was quoted in the article, as "not crunching Seti", I think that's a valid topic here, as it directly relates to the link posted at the start of this thread. As I was named in this thread, long before I posted in this thread, I think it's fair that I respond here, and I'm just happy that Matt is catching some flack. I've seen him for what he is for a long time, and I'm glad that others do too! |

Absolutely amazing how some nice publicity can turn into name calling and vitriol. |

Absolutely amazing how some nice publicity can turn into name calling and vitriol. Ned.. How long have you been here? This is typical, but now you complain because it's Matt? (AKA "the Anti-azwoody") |

I am one of the dreaded cheerleaders. More like the CEO of Firestone driving a Ford. Dr. Anderson's interest is in computer science, if you want to experiment with DC, you need something to distribute. |

The article ends with the following, regarding people still massively crunching for seti and not so much for other projects, even when it's supposed to be "common knowledge" that there's little chance to ever detect an alien signal. And I quote: This columnist, though, knows no such compulsion. I asked Mr. Benoit: With polar ice caps melting, doesn't someone who continues to use their computer for manifestly less timely problems surely have water on their hands? My god, do we really need to run complex computer models to know what we have to do to stop global warming? I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Any intelligent and educated human being knows what things we need to do and what we need to stop doing in order for our planet to stop bleeding to death. And we also know why it doesn't happen. Maybe Lee Gomes should have used Einstein or Rosetta as examples. /Shrug. /Mav We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars. Dogbytes, you're the new AZ Woody: a big loudmouth who revels in spreading discontent and hate. LoL...Surprisingly this doesn't anger me. You have made my day w/ a funny Matt. It's odd because your lack of any insight will cause you one day to breed w/ the likes of Azwoody and create a super Troll. *shivers and chuckles at the possibilites*. Perhaps you and Azwoody should join your wonder twin rings and activate your wonder twin powers. NOW THAT would be amusing. *waits for flash from wonder twin rings* -and laughs-. Heheheheh. I kill me. I guess to draw "negative" attention to the likes of you is absolutely worse than ignoring you...however I hate to ignore the entertainment. People LIKE you are EXCELLENT for a good laugh. Tag..you're it. -dae |

Absolutely amazing how some nice publicity can turn into name calling and vitriol. I don't much care who is getting bashed, or who is doing the bashing. It's the bashing that's wrong. |

Absolutely amazing how some nice publicity can turn into name calling and vitriol. Yeah, right, and you got some swampland in Florida for sale, or a bridge It's Matt, so you're sticking up for him. I've not seen you stick up for others that get bashed! Infact, you've joined in on the bashing, if you don't agree! Just to TRY to keep this on topic, the story posted to start this thread, does seem to indicate that the project director (DR Dave) does seem to indicate that he's no longer crunching Seti, but has moved on to other Boinc projects. That to me, is something that should be considered by anyone crunching for Seti/boinc. It's not a "you or me" level of involvement in the project. It's the "guy in charge"! Let's not make this a "you are all being mean to Matt (the anti-azwoody)" thread, but a thread to address the news story that started this thread! |

Kindly correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Dr. Anderson was the head of the Seti project at Space Sciences Lab, UCB and not connected in any way with the Computer Sciences Department. More like the CEO of Firestone driving a Ford. Dr. Anderson's interest is in computer science, if you want to experiment with DC, you need something to distribute. Is Dr. Andersons degree in computer science or a astronomy related discipline? Just curious. Perhaps he's working on another degree in meteorology? Account frozen... |

It doesn't matter what seti@home was meant to be in the beginning. Maybe it was the "means to" achieve something else. What matters is what is has evolved into, and what it is now. Any intelligent and educated human being knows what things we need to do and what we need to stop doing in order for our planet to stop bleeding to death. How do you feel about nuclear power then? :) |

Any intelligent and educated human being knows what things we need to do and what we need to stop doing in order for our planet to stop bleeding to death. Heh, what about it? As far as I know nuclear power is not the cause of global warming. Or is it? Maybe I'm outdated. :P /Mav We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. Yeah, I really don't see what the big deal is here. Dr. Anderson has worked for BOINC for a couple of years now. Not seti. He seems to only touch seti to deploy BOINC updates. As far as I know, he hasn't been "in charge" of day to day operations in at least 2 years. Him crunching for CPDN doesn't bother me one bit. A member of The Knights Who Say NI! Kindly correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that Dr. Anderson was the head of the Seti project at Space Sciences Lab, UCB and Dr Dave, from anything I've seen, has no formal education in CS. Seti@home (classic), gave him a name in the area of DC, but he then lost his NSF funding. So then came Boinc. Boinc got NSF funding, and Seti was a good test case project. No NSF funding for Seti directly, but Boinc got bucks, Years later, no NSF funding for Seti, but BOINC still has NSF bucks. Dr Dave is incharge of Boinc, but is now crunching for other projects, as that will keep the NSF funding for Boinc alive. Dr Dave was the CEO of GM, but went to work for the the guys that supply tires for the whole industry. His quote in the WSJ seems to indicate that he's now driving a British import on those tires. (BTW, I do crunch for CPDN, and can understand that the future isn't with Seti) |

Dr Dave has ALSO been in charge of Seti for this whole time.... If he's not in charge of Seti, who is? Please provide a name! Dr Dave, quite simply, sees that Seti is dying, and is now putting his funding chips on other boinc projects! If Boinc keeps going, his NSF grant will continue, and since Seti hasn't gotten NSF funding in quite some time, he doesn't really care, and is crunching for other projects. If Dr Dave isn't in charge of Seti/Boinc, provide a name for the person that is! I know, you cant.... |

Dr Dave, from anything I've seen, has no formal education in CS. Seti@home (classic), gave him a name in the area of DC, but he then lost his NSF funding. Then you haven't been looking in the right places as usual. "Dr. Dave" in fact has a BA and an MA in Mathematics and a Masters and PhD in CS. I suspect that this is more education than you have. Google too hard to use? As for who runs the project... well yes I don't know for sure but take a look around. For example the pictures of the seti classic shutdown. Dave wasn't even in the room when they took it down. He stopped by to chat later. Eric, Matt and Jeff seem to be much more involved with seti than Dave is. Dave is VERY active on the boinc_dev mailing list and checks in changes to the BOINC CVS just about every day. He works for BOINC, and even though he does seem to still have the official title as director of seti, it has been very apparent for a while that his primary focus is BOINC. Hence my lack of surprise/concern about him not crunching for seti. A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |

Absolutely amazing how some nice publicity can turn into name calling and vitriol. How is your "you've joined the bashing if you don't agree" statement any different than asking "have you stopped beating your wife?" I stand by my statement. I'm not opposed or in favor of any one individual, I'm opposed to the bashing. I'm not going to single out Matt, or you. |
