What is whith this guy?

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=1060607

Is he running a optimized client? His numbers look all very low.

No he don´t use an optimized client.

He is running the old Boinc 4.45 core client.
It dont uses fpops whats needed with enhanced.
Some machines has higher claimed and some lower.

He is running BOINC cc 4.45. To get proper credits, the minimum ver is 5.2.6 which utilises FLOPs counting. The previous versions still rely on benchmark reporting.

Seti is aware of this and in the near future, will probably stop sending work to people running older clients.

The reason it still hasn't been done is that the only client available for Solaris/SPARC is 4.43. So till someone ports and tests a client for Solaris/SPARC this won't happen.

I believe that Dotsch has built such a client but he still needs to test it before releasing it.

I'm curious about why 4.45 is still being offered on the download page. Anybody know?

Hi Digger.

It was discuessed many times here, but nobody knows for sure.
This is one point so many crunchers stoped running Seti.
With normal seti i got around 250-300 credits a day per machine.
With enhanced is less than half.
For me personally its on low priority but for some credits junkys its important.
4.45 claimes a lot less than 5.2.6 and later.

regards Mike

4.45 is still offered because of a few reasons. The 5.2.x versions there have some slight issues that they still need to fix. Proxy being one of them. Plus they need the full port to Solaris before they can force the upgrade.

LOL, yep, proxy issues aside, I most likely wouldn't be too inclined to cut off the machines of one of my major corporate sponsors either! ;-)

Okay, thanks. I do understand they can't force the upgrade to fpops clients yet, especially because of the Solaris/SPARC porting. But since 4.45 is a Windows-only client, I thought at least it would have been removed from the download page by now and discouraged from use. I hadn't realized there were still bugs in the latest Windows clients as well. Thanks for clarifying.

All software has undocumented features (although in this case they are documented).

Thanks Grant,

I noted the message about proxy users not upgrading to 5.4.9 yet, but since 5.2.13 does not carry that warning I guess I was still wondering why 4.45 is offered for download. I will just assume that there are 'unknown' forces at work here with valid reasons for doing so. I was more curious than anything else. Not complaining at all :)

Hey Digger, All versions of major V5 Boinc software have NTLM proxy issues that they are attempting to fix with 5.5.4 and future forward versions. V5 is when Libcurl first made the scene. This doesn't affect many as I hear it. I'm guessing the few users that are affected are contained in the "larger corp network" users and have many systems to attach. This last part is just a guess.

Thanks Tony,

I appreciate the information.

I had initially thought maybe it was just an oversight, and that if we pulled 4.45 from the shelves we could at least stop new users from downloading it even if we can't force existing users to upgrade. If the proxy issue for 5.4.9 had also been mentioned in the 5.2.13 version info, I would never have questioned why 4.45 was still being offered. Perhaps the upgrade warning should be added to that client as well so folks don't mistakenly download it.

Thanks again,

Dig

Actually, it is possible to force users to upgrade. Each RPC (Remote Proceedure Call) to the server contains the version of the client - if the client reports a version number too low, the server will not send work. The value of "too low" is a project setting. However, as has been stated, the admins are waiting for a few bugs to be fixed as well as for a couple of platforms to be supported.

... hopefully with some sort of message appearing in the Messages tab (along the lines of "This client has been deemed too out-of-date, you will need to upgrade before being able to receive more work units"). That might hopefully reduce the volume of "Why has S@H stopped sending me WUs" type postings.

Only the science application is updated automatically. It's up to you to update the manager manually.

Any Special install instructions or can I just install the 5.4.9 over top of the older 5.2.13?

There should be no problems.
To be safe back up the BOINC folder first.
And remember that on the first starting of 5.4.9 it will do a benchmark test.
