Today's Afternoon Chess Problem is called "Fighting Back" because White, though furiously attacked, fights back to secure a draw.

Enjoy!

The Mid-Afternoon Chess Problem is called "Trappist Monk" because White's task here is to capture the elusive Bishop for the win.

Enjoy!

Are you sure you've drawn that right? There seem to be an unusual number of knights and I think I can see a white to win in 2.

Heh. Yeah, I thought for a second that there was a win in 2 also, but I don't think so anymore. Yep, it's drawn correctly, and there is still a Draw in this for White.

Post your win in 2 solution in fine print Es, and I'll have a look at it.

This is more complicated..I'll put down what I've got so far and then go back and check:

vers 1: Ke3-d4
Bc4 - a2
Rb1 - b2
Bishop doomed

Vers 2: Ke3-d4
Bc4-e2
Rb1-e1
Bishop doomed

Ver 3: Ke3-d4
If the Bishop silly enough Bc4-a6
Rb1-b6+
Bishop doomed

I think Es99's version 1 is correct (fortunately I hit refresh before replying!)
1. Ke4-d4 Bc4-a2 (forced)
2. Rb1-b2 Ba2-d5 (forced)
3. Rb2-b6+
The black king cannot now defend the bishop no matter what black does.

I go for mate in two too:

1. Bg1xNf2+ Nh1xBf2 (forced, king can't move, other knights pinned)
2. Qf1xNF2++ (king still can't move, other knights still pinned)

Damn! The white king is in check! Back to the drawing board...

1. Bg1Xf2+ is not a legal move because White is in check at the begining of the problem (Ne1).

=> Black moves Ne1xg2 and kills White King... Game over...

Edit - I'm apparently a slow typer... :)

Correct Octagon, and a very quick reply before I could update my post!

I'm still trying to figure out what kind of an evil genius could get all eight pawns to the far side of the board and promote them all to Knights while losing both Rooks, both Bishops and the Queen :-)

1; Qf1xe1 Stalemate.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

We have a winner!

Congratulations, Ingleside!

Well done!

1. QxNe1 removes the check and causes a stalemate. Black's King cannot move, nor can his Knights, which are all pinned (or blocked as the h1 Knight is). The stalemate results, of course, in a draw.

An Honorable Mention goes to Es for nearly solving first. When you consolidate her versions you have the solution except for Black's Ba2-d5 followed by Rb2-b6+.

The Evening Chess Problem is called "Pitfall" because that's exactly what White must avoid in solving this puzzler.

Enjoy!

ok, this was a tough one, and I'm not altogether sure if my solution is a draw...but for what it's worth here it is:

Kd2-e1
Rb5xb6
Rc2xe2
Any available black move
Ke2-f1
