What was the main reason for the strike? Who/What is Crunch3r?

Crunch3r was a much admired member of the Seti community who optimised the Seti applications. His work on the old version 4.18 enabled the work to be done about 3 times faster.

The enhanced version was tested on the Beta site and Crunch3r had his own small group testing his optimised version of the enhanced application within the beta site.

Five days before the launch of the enhanced version on the main site the chief Developer Eric Korpela, said the enhanced version was ready for release but that the fpops credit calculation needed revising downwards.

When the official version 5.12 was released, Crunch3r also released an optimised version but based on the previous Beta version 5.11 in which the credit calculation was over claiming.

Crunch3r shortly after produced optimised versions for 5.12, but did not withdraw the 5.11 version. He was asked about this, and the outcome was he has withdrawn all optimised applications and left Seti.

He will be missed.

He was asked about this, and....

My, my... that's painting a blissfully politically correct face on what really transpired....

SSl's lack of offical information didn't help matters much. When some of the developers did weigh in, the forum was in a virtual state of civil war already, with various groups taking sides against one another. Maybe, there is a lesson in this? Project Rosetta has been the info flagship of all the projects and gets an A-, while Seti on the other hand gets an C- at best.

Good upfront information is the poison of rumours and speculation.
