I just switch over to the Space channel, here in Canada, and found that they were running the movie Contact. I just can't help but wonder, "What would Carl Sagan think of all the foolishness going on this board".

It's a complex question. Carl Sagan was himself often ruthlessly competitive, as many (or perhaps most?) scientists are. Competition is one of the means by which good science gets done. Science is rarely moved forward simply for the pure motive of doing science.

Having said that, Carl Sagan was often able to put his competitive nature aside. He endured many slights with grace, many setbacks with steady continuance. [EDIT] And that is another means by which good science gets done. [/EDIT]

Hi Aurora Borealis

Hi Lance

thanks , Aurora Borealis for that info , I didn't know that ... I'm going to watch the the rest of the Movie now __ :-)

I like what Lance said in one of his posts

Lance wrote the following

Carl Sagan is responsible for my interest in science (and particularly astronomy, physics and cosmology), to a large degree for my independence of mind, and to some degree for my decision to discard the rather narrow religious worldview I was born into.

Mostly, Carl Sagan is responsible for my sense of wonder. Watching Cosmos as a boy planted a seed of wonder within me that has stood the test of time. In fact it's hard for me to really describe how pivotal Carl Sagan has been in helping me to see wonder in Nature.

thanks ... Lance ... I agree with you 100 % ..... I couldn't of said it better my self!

for me it was in 1980 ...... PBS ... 13 hour long Cosmos ... series .... that took my breath away ...... !

thanks Aurora Borealis
thanks Lance
