White to move and mate in five. Again, not sure if it's already been solved, if so :oops: 1; Qd1-a4+ 1a; Qd8-d7 => 2; Nc4xd6+, Ke8-d8; 3; Bd4-b6+, Qd7-c7; 4; Qa4-e8 mate. 1b; Bb7-c6 2; Qa4xc6+ Qd8-d7 3; Nc4xd6+ Ke8-d8 4; Bd4-b6+ Qd7-c7 5; Qc6-e8 mate. Or, take the Queen with your Queen or Bishop. Enough chess for me today. :zzz: |

dang how can you guys do these in your head, I need to find a chess board and actually DO IT. I'm sure some people are using chessboard, Mike. :-) But you do get better at "picturing" positions/moves with practice. It's mainly a practice thing, is all. Remembering little things like: that Knights always move to a square that's the other color from the square they started, also help to "lock" a part of a board in the mind's eye. I think that picturing a 4 x 4 board isn't all that hard, but to picture an 8 x 8 full chessboard is plenty hard. I can't do it: I haven't practiced it enough. |

dang how can you guys do these in your head, I need to find a chess board and actually DO IT. Since I'm at work, I save the picture of the chessboard and use block-cut-and-paste to move the pieces around in MS Paint. Very hi-tech :-) No animals were harmed in the making of the above post... much. |

My Goodness you're good at these! Continuing on the blonde-theme... (no offence intended to anyone) :concentratec hard: 1 finger... 2... finger... ... 3... ... finger? ... 4... finger... :uhm, hey, there is the nail-polish... :vacant look: More seriously, if remembers correctly, it was 7 in the old thread, and 5? in this. As for being good to solve these, if hadn't known there was a forced mate in N moves, would likely happily used 10+ moves on many of the problems and overlooked 1 or 2 mates on the way... Oh, and no, is not using nail-polish, and has the beard to prove is not female atleast. :) Anyway, it's late, so goodnight. :zzz: |

The CPOTD is Robert James "Bobby" Fischer, born March 9, 1943, a Grandmaster and former Undisputed World Chess Champion, who on September 1, 1972, became the first American chess player to win the FIDE World Chess Championship. In 1975, he officially lost the title when FIDE, the international chess federation, refused to accept his conditions for a title defense. Garry Kasparov wrote that of all world champions of chess, the skill gap between Fischer and his contemporaries was the largest in history. Fischer is also well known for his eccentricity, unconventional and irrational behavior, rabid anti-Semitism and outspoken political views. Despite his prolonged absence from competitive play, or perhaps because of it, Fischer is still among the best known of all chess players. Fischer's victory over the Soviet champion Boris Spassky to win the undisputed world championship in the "Match of the Century" was seen as a symbolic victory for the West that catalyzed interest in the game internationally. His opponent (Boris Spassky - see the CPOTD from two days ago) was portrayed, in the United States in particular, as the product of an impersonal, mechanical, and oppressive system of state control, while Fischer was the solitary genius overcoming the Soviets' claim to dominance. As he was a national hero, Americans were willing to forgive his behavior and views as eccentricities, and in popular culture he became a symbol of the genius whose brilliance is so great that he is destroyed by it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Fischer Here's a couple of pics of Bobby Fischer, then and now. |
