Ageless, so what do I do with that 500mhz machine? In regard to the enhanced app i may need to d/l? I also have a laptop but think i read somewhere it may up the heat on laptop's cpu if I enhance the app?

anyway, if I should d/l enhanced seti apps can u post me a link? Also, please see my original questions/concerns a few posts up as they haven't been addressed yet.

Andy, you also seemed like you would know the answers to these.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Robert, they'll be sending regular seti the Enhanced app. You either fall into one of two catagories. Either you use the standard seti application 4.18, or you don't (meaning you're running an optimized application). If you're running the standard app, you need to do NOTHING. It will automatically download onto your system. If you use an optimized app, then you'll need to delete the "Appinfo.xml" file to get it to download. Which are you?

Well, I'm not running an optimized app. This is kind of the thrust of what I've been trying to ask here. I'm really ignorant here of what/how to crank up my crunching ability. Am I supposed to not do anything until seti enhanced comes out THEN go and d/l an optimized app somewhere? I'm totally confused. The laptop i have is athlon 3k with just 256 RAM. The other machine that runs SETI is that 500mhz celeron with 256 ram as well. I don't know what optimized stuff to d/l or even if I should. Thanks for your patience.

If you're not using an optimized app now, then you need do NOTHING. Optimization has already occurred in the official enhanced app, but other are working on optimizing it even further, but currently there is NO optimized app available for download (outside of a small testing group). So, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

For your deadline question, look at the list in Ingleside's post here.

Some people are busy with an optimised version of Seti Enhanced. That one will come out in due time, after the release of Seti Enhanced.

Seti Enhanced should be able to run in 32MB of memory, less than the current Seti application (which needs 64MB at minimum). It'll take more memory when it finds more memory, but only up to 64MB at present tests, per result being crunched.

Alright, what about the optimized BOINC thing? Should I get that?

Since you're not running an optimized application now, and you're running BOINC v5.2.13, you don't need to do anything at all. Seti_Enhanced will be automatically downloaded when needed.

As for optimized BOINC-client, this is a waste of download-time when it comes to Seti_Enhanced, since Seti_Enhanced doesn't rely on the artificially inflated benchmarks (or too high calibration) of any of "optimized" BOINC-clients.

Well, atleast one of them also includes some new functionality, so can still be worth a download...

Alright, what about the optimized BOINC thing? Should I get that?

No.

What most optimized BOINC clients do is "optimize" the benchmarks.

Where Seti calculates the credit at this moment according to the time it takes to crunch the result times the benchmarks of your CPU, Seti Enhanced throws that out of the window and calculates the credit according to the actual floating point operations per second (FLOPs) that your CPU can do.

This means that a fast CPU will claim about the same credit as a slow CPU will do, no matter if the fast one took 2 hours and the slow one 24 hours on the same result.

5.2.7 now, WOW, that was fast. Feels like yesterday I downloaded and installed the 5.2.6. ;-D

Fuzzy,

What dream world are you living in now, on the official BOINC board you have been able to download 5.2.13 for ages. And on the Dev's site you can get 5.4.7.

Or maybe your spectacle's need cleaning;-)

It will use roughly 70MB if you uses the screensaver.

Oh, and congrats on becoming new "sheriff". :)

Sorry for the confusion regarding the release of enhanced. The release of enhanced will happen slowly and in a random fashion so as not to use up too much of our bandwidth at once. It will probably take a month or more for this initial release to get out to all the machines out there.

The enhanced application uses different workunits and generates different results than the standard application. If you run the enhanced client on a workunit built for the standard application (or vice vera) you will get a result that will not validate, and therefore you probably won't get credit.

If you are running with the anonymous platform mechanism you will need to add a separate element for the enhanced application.

Work will continue to be distributed fpr the normal SETI@home application, with the ratio of enhanced vs normal work slowly being increased over time until the normal application is phased out.

Eric, will you please let us know when you start sending out WU's?

I'll ditch my optimized client then. But not before. ;-)

If I did it correctly, it should.. if you had the SE app downloaded in the first place. ;)

When the BOINC core client sends a request to the scheduler it asks for xxx seconds of work and lists the set of applications you have. The scheduler reply says where to get the work and which application it is for. Without app_info.xml the scheduler might also say where to get new application files. It will never send a setiathome_enhanced WU to a host unless the host already has the setiathome_enhanced application or can be told to download it.

Not quite correct...

Scheduler-request only lists the available application(s) if you're using app_info.xml, not in "normal" mode.

The scheduler reply says where to get the work and which application it is for. Without app_info.xml the scheduler might also say where to get new application files.

Without app_info.xml the scheduler always says where to download neccessary application-file(s).

It will never send a setiathome_enhanced WU to a host unless the host already has the setiathome_enhanced application or can be told to download it.

Correct...

The important to remember is, in "normal" mode client automatically downloads all neccessary files including application-files, to crunch whatever work you've assigned.

If using app_info.xml on the other hand, you'll never automatically download application-files, and you can only get work for application(s) listed in the app_info.xml-file. All application-file(s) must be manually downloaded & installed.
