I don't have win2K. Mcafee works well on all my systems from win98 first edition, second edition, winxpsp1 and 2. On Celeron 500, PIII 500, P4 1.8, Athlonxp 2200, AMD64 2800 Clawhammer, AMD643700 (754 socket), and AMD64 3700 939 socket sandiego. I've used two different versions of Mcafee for the whole time Boinc has been alive. I don't think it's a mcafee issue.

Does it lock up immediately, or just randomly while running?

Never having used Win2K, I can only guess. Is it possible you have more than ONE instance of Boinc running?

You state you've uninstalled and reinstalled. Did you Uninstall, delete the boinc directory (or all boinc directories, do a search after deletion). The boinc directory is NOT removed by uninstall and could contain corrupted files that remain when reinstalling. Then check places like "msconfig" to ensure it and all copies have been removed. go through registry and remove anything with the words boinc or seti. then reinstall/reattach.

Oh yeah, which version of boinc are you using?

There is nothing wrong using Win 2000, I've been using it on at least one computer since it came out. In my opinion, better to use than XP as some of the options you can tweak and play with, where in XP, MS have done it for the mass's and automated things and if you don't want it that way you have a fight on your hands.

ya mouse and all
First of all, I'd try localizing whether it comes from the boinc core client, from the manager, or from the application. Remove boinc from the StartUp menu, disable the service (if used) and then first try starting manually the S@H application in one of the slot subdirectories (or create a separate folder with just the exe file and a WU renamed to work_unit.sah). If it works, stop it, and try launching the boinc.exe. If it works too, try launching the boinc manager.

If you use my core client, make sure you did not set the process priority to the level 5 (Real Time - that will bring most systems close to the point of freezing).

Also check the stderrdae.txt and stdoutdae.txt files in BOINC directory, and events in Event Viewer - it may reveal the culprit too.

In this post the user states he does NOT use any optimization. Atleast that's how I read it. I can be interpretted different ways I suppose.

Well, I prefer telling it anyway, possibly also for the case he uses other means for changing the process prority. Besides it, my later core clients are no optimizations at all. They are simply modified or enhanced (not optimized) clients. Though, that's just a word game, I guess the user understood what was meant when asked for 'optimized application'. On the other hand he answers rather cryptically, always appedning at least two question marks, so it is not quite clear if he really answers the question, or asks what you meant

Heck, I just thought of this:

If the user is using the screensaver, the Video drivers might be causing this. When reinstalling, Uncheck the box "make boinc the default screensaver". You might also go to the control panel, display, screensaver and remove boinc as the screensaver.

does this help? If so you might need updated video drivers.

The account key they're talking about is the one that was given to you when you activated your account, along with the address of the project. You can get it emailed to you from here.
