I understand the concept of Seti and have been running it on my pc for a while now. However I would like to know specifically what it's analyzing. Im just curious to know exactly what is going on at any given time. If anyone can explain or even provide a link where i can get this info would be great.

Thanks From B4

Im suprised, ill and give you what information you want but im not sure what your looking for.

Seti@home is scanning the radio signals that are detected by the arecibo telescope(you know that huge one that about 1km in width or something, featured in James Bond-Goldeneye), it is looking at the signals that arecibo is picking up and looking for particular types and sizes of spikes in the data. When you finish the workunit you are doing it will be reported to seti and the main spikes in the data considered for strength and probability of being alien in origin.

i was told that there is no candidate wu with boinc, so for non science people how are we going to know what wu or set of wu's contain et information? since the institute doesn not openly inform what are the breakthroughs and obstacles i guess too many people are crunching in the darkness and praying for holy supreme being the SETI Institute.

i am sure that one day in few months/years/decades the instute will announce the contact, but until then there are many probable sources/wu's might have being noticed...

The only way youll really know if you find an ET signal is by watching the workunits on your computer. I suppose if there are any major interest points, the person who computed it may be announced. Other then that you have to watch. I dont think you have to wait very long. I was just logging onto my computer when there was a massive gaussian appearing 2days ago. Ive only really been working on seti for about 2months and the chance of coming onto my computer just as a big gaussian is being processed just within those 2months is pretty small. If you are working on seti for a year it is pretty much gauranteed that your computer(s) will find multiple large guassians.

can you tell me the url explaining all those frequencies? especially the gaussian.

thank you.

I am certain you ARE correct in that assumption...

(Nellis AirForce base is just another, lol!)

* Imagine the CHANGE that would occur if you let a populace that can't even live with one another worldwide in peace/cooperation, know that there was more than JUST US...

P.S.=> Personally? I think it'd help 'galvanize' humanity into a single unit, rather than divide or panic us, by knowing we had 'company' out here in the cosmos.

(By "galvanizing" us (unification for common good) - Not just for money/profit either, but for the nobility of doing just plain dead-up good things for the accomplishment of it - imo, things like Linux & the OpenSource software movement (though I am WAY more of a 'microsoftie') exemplify the fact that we can do things for free that are marvels).

Anyhow - Logic says there HAS to be other life out there of what WE consider 'intelligence', out of all the millions of planets in each galaxy, & millions of galaxies though - think about it! apk
