Message 225671 - Posted: 4 Jan 2006, 7:37:30 UTC

I have wasted several working days worth of time trying to get Seti@home to upload and download WUs over the last month and trolling through the Q&As, etc. looking for answers.

I have detached from seti@home.

1) Trolling is never a good idea when want people to help you.
2) Which messages does BOINC give you? In order to diagnose and identify the problem, we need some info to work with.

Hope to see you back, crunching and being happy :-)

Here is a link to the technical news: link

The database was down on Monday for a while.. And will be again tomorrow. And if I understood things correctly, maybe even some on thursday. Basically, everyone just has to be patient.. I haven't run out of work yet. I am also running a few other projects so that I don't ever run out of work. but, boinc is designed that if you just leave it alone and let it do it's thing, it will sort its self out..

On another note, you told us absolutly nothing about your problem. Answer these questions please:

What OS are you running?
What Version of boinc are you running
Is it optimized?
What errors are you getting?

These are all good things that will help people be able to help you.

I too have had many troubles with S@H. But, that is something to be expected when working with something on the forefront of an experiment. The servers and programing on Berkeley's side of things are undergoing something that may have been planned at some point, but never completely thought out and tested. That's the problem with experimenting is you can't test a test. So, I would ask if the problems occured during server problems or if you can't get anything anymore? I've checked your stats and it seems you've gotten work, so I wonder where the problem is at. If you could be more specific on any problems including message tab excerpts, that would be very helpful.

Also, it's none of my business, but I would consider reattaching to S@H, and also other BOINC based projects. SETI may be having problems, but they are coming around bit by bit and should smooth out soon. Attaching to other projects will give your box something to do while waiting for SETI to work.

As you have not asked any questions here, I will not provide you with any answers. If you have questions, change your attitude and come back and ask them. Otherwise... bye!

I guess what is going on is Brant Goose gave up before asking a question.

Brant, you have made all of two posts, one of which was the one below. And, as others have said, without some idea of what you are experiencing it is impossible for my SETI enhanced, NSA approved spy glasses to see exactly what happened (good thing he is Canadian, it is legal to spy on him :)).

What? You did not know the purpose of the "V" chip was to enable the cable company to use the TV set to watch you in your house?

("V" is an abbreviation for "Violation of Privacy, but only in the interests of prosecuting the war on terror and those we don't like; and, if you are being watched you must be guilty or else we would not be opening your mail, looking at the books you get from the library, tapping your phone, scanning your e-mail, and in general making sure that a lab rat has more privacy than you do ... brought you you by the same ''compassionate' conservatives who also think that cutting benefits to people will stop them from being frivolous and wasting the cash on luxuries like food and shelter.")

If you look at his stats you can see he was not able to do much in the way of uploading until Dec. 15 and that was also his last Download. In fact, that was the last recorded contact his machine had with the servers. So unless he gave up three weeks ago and just got around to telling the message board about it, he has a bad Internet connection problem.

Of course Dec. 15 is when BOINC/Seti recovered from its long outage and he could have wasted two days during that outage trying to get it to upload all his finished work and get something to do. He might not have been able to get new work during the recovery and just gave up.

I think the confusion is in the spelling of "trolling"--I think he meant "trawling" as in searching :) , not as in being a troll. If that is indeed his usage, unfortunately, doesn't look like he tried very hard because there LOADS of posts with answers to his unasked question and LOADS of helpful people here.
Hope he realizes he was hasty and decides to come back to the fold. :)

Tin hat on.

Trolling in English (England and Canada) means walking or strolling or secondly searching or seeking. So I think he meant searching by perusing (strolling) through Q&A in search of an answer to his unasked questions.

I hope he comes back so we can help him.

Here's EVERY post he made here or Q&A:

1) Questions and answers : Platform-specific problems : Windows : Why can't I find my questions?

I've tried posting to this place several times. It looks like my post is made and then when I look for it immediately after I am done, nada.

What is happening?

Actually if he's in Canada, it is legal for the CIA and NSA to spy on him.

In the U.S. if he's to be spied upon, the CIA (et. al.) are not allowed to do so.

It's up to the FBI to do the spying.

Either way, the truth shall set you free.

Well, then we have the law according to President Bush ... which in his opinion seems to be that he can do anything he wants.

Stalin and Hitler used the same arguments. Not sure if that really should be the company he wants to keep ...

Oh, and Posses Comitus is no longer relevant in todays modern world ... (an interesting article arguing this point). Though a casual study of history, and current events I might add, shows that the use of military troups in law enforcement is not a wise thing to do ...

My success rate is well under 5%. Probably the same server problems that are plaguing seti@home are plaguing the message boards and Q&A.

And yes, I did mean "trolling" in the sense of diligently searching back and forth. Well spotted!

Some trolls are not very talkative but I've been talking to a brick walk for several weeks.
