Message 223297 - Posted: 30 Dec 2005, 14:36:26 UTC

It appears that my efforts to open the "cliff" account are fruitless. I'd just like to get this thing up and running under my "cliff yuill, Sr" account if that's possible. I know I would lose the WU's under "cliff" but it would seem less hassle if I could do it that way. I did retrieve the BOINC acct number, however I don't know how to log in under the "cliff" account. In fact .. where the heck do I log in?? Too many details. All said and done, if I could get BOINC up and running under CYsr.. I'd be happy. Then I can proceed to find out how to get enough WU's downloaded to last more than a few hours.Kinda, sorta .. like starting from scratch I guess.

You logged in here in the forum successfully so you can attach to SETI@home too with the same login data.

Have a look:

  • move to your personal profile here and change your password if not yet done
  • alter the cache size in your general preferences under Network usage first setting.
  • Open BOINC Manager, select menuitem Attach to Project
  • then enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
  • then press Next
  • then select "login to existing account"
  • two input fields appear
  • enter the email address you used to login here in the forum (the one with the address behind "Cliff Yuill, Sr")
  • enter the password (you've set in first item above)
  • then press Next
  • You should now be attached to SaH (check Projects list in BOINC Manager)
  • downloading new WUs will then start and everything runs automatically

If you want to move over, since this is the account that is with your Classic credit do the following:

Set SETI to NO NEW WORK on the Projects tab. Allow the work to finish (keeping in mind the science is important to do). Once all WU are finished and report (nothing left in the WORK tab), then DETATCH from the project. Then ATTACH TO A NEW PROJECT, and use this accounts credentials.

You really do not lose the other stuff, it will be there, and you will have two accounts. Just not all merged into one. Not a big deal.

As for Logging In, you go to the Home Page and click the Login option under the heading of Your Account.

Good luck, Cliff. Glad to see you have not given up with all these little issues. You are a dedicated person, and it's awesome to see.

Not sure if I'm o.k. or not. I selected attach to project after changing my PW and gen preferences cache to 10 days. I entered the URL and was told I was already attached so had no "log in to existing account" option. Went to BOINC manager and asked for new work. Says "communication deferred". "Messages" show 2 finished? uploads ...14fe05ab 25600,etc and 10fe05aa 27202 etc. Last message is "request reschedule_cpus: project OP. "work" shows 3 applications.... progress 100% with report dates of 1/11 and 1/12 2006. Status says "ready to report.

I'm totally in the dark about whether I'm processing WU's or not or if I'm connected properly .. finally. Don't know where or what to check to see if all is correct. \\

Glad to see that a solution is under way. I couldn't log on too often in the last days.

Yes, it really easies things if you abandon 'Cliff' and stick to 'Cliff Yuill, Sr'. I was under the false impression that you wanted to crunch on with the same account you once began to. But as Pooh says: No stats lost, just one part of it being in another account.

Everything you've described tells me: BOINC is working properly! Ready to report means that you can (but don't have to since it is made automatically) select the SETI@home project in the projects tab and then click the "Update" button. The "Ready to report" WUs should now disappear and maybe new WUs could be downloaded.
To find out if BOINC is crunching, simply check the task list (press Ctrl-Shift-ESC) and check for the performance graph: it should display 100%.

when you say "task list" are you referring to the "task manager"? I get an indication that it is running using CSE, but no 100% indication. "performance" indicates up to 5% CPU usage. BOINC is set to run when my system is idle. Under the Projects tab, when I click on the SETI@home, I get the SETI home page and nowhere do I find and "update" button. ????

Aah, found it. It's on the main BOINC manager page . Clicked the update and it seems to be downloaded. NOt sure how I'll determine if it's successful or if it's processing, but I will monitor and see if I can interpret.
I tried to copy/paste the page shown but can't seem to get print screen to work in that fashion. Pasted it to "word" o.k. but can't get it in here. Under "work' it's showing 9% progress with a completion time of just over 2 hours and "running". so .. guess that part is o.k. However, MY ACCOUNT is still showing it under "cliff" not cliff yuill, sr. Can't seem to get that part changed.

The problem is: If you have set BOINC to run only when idle, then you can't see it processing actively. As you move around the mouse and open things, your computer is active and then BOINC of course stops processing.

So you will have to find out indirectly:
Open in BOINC manager the work window, see which WU is maked as 'running' and note the CPU time and/or the progress percentage.
Then, after a while (longer than the time it takes for BOINC to activate) look up the same again and compare the figures.

Now to the changing of the account:

Do exactly what Pooh and RRipley have told:

First (to detach from the other account):

Set SETI to NO NEW WORK on the Projects tab. Allow the work to finish (keeping in mind the science is important to do). Once all WU are finished and report (nothing left in the WORK tab), then DETATCH from the project.

Second (to attach to your present account):

  • move to your personal profile here and change your password if not yet done
  • alter the cache size in your general preferences under Network usage first setting.
  • Open BOINC Manager, select menuitem Attach to Project
  • then enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
  • then press Next
  • then select "login to existing account"
  • two input fields appear
  • enter the email address you used to login here in the forum (the one with the address behind "Cliff Yuill, Sr")
  • enter the password (you've set in first item above)
  • then press Next

BTW: I wouldn't hesitate to give you my mail address, but it may be helpful for other volunteers to read about the progress in here.

Well, when clicking on your computer's list, there's no machine listed. Since you're crunching a WU currently, there MUST be one listed.
Conclusion: You are still attached with the "cliff" account.

If you want to run under the "Cliff Yuill, Sr" account, do this:

  • select the project in the projects tab (as mmciastro described) and click "no new work" (now "allow new work" must be visible)
  • wait until all WUs have been crunched (maybe a few days). All current WU's in the work tab must have the status "ready to report".
  • then select the project setiathome again, click "update". After that the work tab must be empty.
  • now select the project setiathome and click "detach" (confirm the upcoming request)
  • now select menuitem Attach to Project
  • then enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
  • then press Next

Thanks much. I will try this when the current processing is finished. I'd really like to get this up and running as I want it, and continue processing WU's. I've actually been processing under the old Classic since about 1996, altho I'm shown as joining in 2001. Somehow guess I lost all the old credits. No matter. Concern is to get it working now. Thanks you again. Will post when I've made the adjustments.

Whoopee!! Got it .. finally ... Now, to download new WU's, do I just click on the "update" button?? And when the WU's are complete, do I use "transmit" or the "update". Not sure how to proceed in this ... Or .. is there an "automatic" setting that .. after asking permission ... does the up and download?

Generally all the network actions are done automatically. You can micro manage it by using the update button, but this isn't really needed.
These days getting new WUs is a bit delayed due to the big demand plus the migration of the old and the new science database into one. Just be patient and let BOINC do its job silently.

Once agan, thank your (all of you) for your help in my project. It appears 3 new WU's downloaded this a.m. and are now crunching. I'll monitor and see if my Scotland's SETI get's the credit when they're finished. It was a struggle, but appears it's up and running. Hope your New Year is all you want.

Cliff,

It looks good from this end! I looked at your Cliff Yuill, Sr account, and your machine is attached as of today, and has 9 results downloaded. Glad you were able to get it running. I am sorry I was less than optimal on help, but you had a lot of good people helping you here.

Greybeard, RRipley and Tony seemed to help it make sense for you. Good job guys and keep up the great work on these boards.

[quote]Once agan, thank your (all of you) for your help in my project. It appears 3 new WU's downloaded this a.m. and are now crunching. I'll monitor and see if my Scotland's SETI get's the credit when they're finished. It was a struggle, but appears it's up and running. Hope your New Year is all you want.
Cliff

Thanks for the reply, PoohBear .. There's nothing like experience to call on to help with problems. Yay for the forum and Q&A board.
