Windows XP. Deleted old version of SETI completely. Downloaded BOINC. Looked OK. Tried to run it. Message: "BOINC manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client." Tried "projects", "attach to projects" (per suggestion) -- same message. Tried using both "localhost" (with no password) and blank in host name and password to connect -- same message. Per suggestion, tried to look at Port 1043 -- does not appear on list as being used by anything else. I am so very stuck! Any other ideas would be very helpful. Thanks.

What kind of firewall do you have?

I had Norton Internet security a while back and I think I had to have the "boincmgr.exe" and "boinc.exe" on the list of stuff that was allowed Internet access.

I never really messed with the XP firewall. If you go into the "control panel" and click on the "Windows firewall" it has some way to set permissions for different programs.

You might also go to the BOINC folder and look for this file "gui rpc auth.cfg" open with word pad and change the password to one you like make sure you enter a return at the end and then save and reboot computer then try the local host entry in select computer popup.....
And the beat goes on

I think there is a problem with the windows installer of BOINC. The installer doesn't install the executable of the boinc client with its right name, so the BOINC manager cannot execute the client. Open the BOINC directory and look for the boinc_cli.exe. If there is none, make a copy of the boinc.exe and give the copy the name boinc_cli.exe. After a restart of the BOINC manager the manager should be able to start the client and to connect to it.
This fixed the same problem on my computer. Maybe it helps you, too.

There was a boinc_cli.exe (before v4.19 I guess). The boinc client is boinc.exe, the GUI manager is boincmgr.exe, the CLI manager is boinccmd.exe.

Hello, Everyone! Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried them all except mucking with the Windows Firewall. I got a bit further (in that my Password for 'localhost' now seems to be recognized), but it's all still failing the same way. I will see what I can do with the firewall, and then...I'm not sure. I appreciate your time and help. Thanks.

As a last thing, I tried this also (yes, there's a place to allow permission for specific s/w). No change. Once again, thanks for all your suggestions...appreciate it.

Perhaps a silly question, but sometimes it's simple things... have you rebooted since tweaking your firewall?

I hate to suggest this and only do it as a last resort.

Remove BOINC in your add or remove programs.

Go into your file directory and manually delete any BOINC folder that may still be there.

Shut down your machine and turn it back on.

Install BOINC.

Attach to SETI using the e-mail that they sent you by copy and paste. Make sure that you have no extra blank spaces at the beginning or the end of the SETI address or your ID number.

If you see any pop-up that is wondering if you want to allow permission for BOINC to access the Internet say yes.

I can't think of anything I am missing. Please feel free to ignore this idea. I would keep trying up to a point and if it didn't want to work, yoink.

Time to start over.

So what's your beef jimjo? It looks like you had both of your machines running okay but now have no new work units to process. Did you switch you preferences to no new work somewhere?
