Message 211213 - Posted: 12 Dec 2005, 6:46:17 UTC

I am having NO FUN with BIONIC so far...Seti was easy to set up this is being a nightmare. (For those that find logs easier I have attached it at the bottom)

Info about me: Using Windows XP Home, MS Firewall off, Sygate Firewall allowing BIONIC through bothways.

I downloaded BIONIC, enter the seti URL from my email I recieved and it came to the next screen.

Selected exisiting member and

Entered my email and password.

I was informed that either my email or password was incorrect.

Entered my email and the SETI classic password

I was informed that either my email or password was incorrect.

Entered my email and acc. Key.

It took a lot longer in working this out but came back with failed to connect to project. RE-booted the machine and it did exactly the same thing.

Please Please help me I have been using Seti for years and want to continue using it

Things you may like to add

Instead of cutting and pasting the url at the beginning of the project why not a drop down list.

ok, from the logs...

12/12/2005 06:14:48||Couldn't connect to hostname [setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu]
12/12/2005 06:14:48|http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of -106

...it looks like your computer is having trouble talking to the seti servers, it seems that you're unable to contact the scheduler (setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu) which may be the reasons boinc is stating that something is "incorrect" which is actually wrong, when it's not, and it's a matter of not being able to check, this should rightly be changed, but keeping on track here, boinc on your computer needs to be able to talk to the scheduler (setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu) as this is the "main" "controlling" server, so we need to sort that out first

on a side note; your classic account info won't work with boinc, they're seperate databases, you have to set you email and password in your account to use with boinc

if you know how could you ping setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu and setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu and post the results here
if not then please say so, and i or someone else can provide step by step instructions to do this

seeing the results of a ping should help determine if it's a communication problem on your end, or something server related (there are currently bandwidth/load issues with the servers)

adding a drop-down list feature has been suggested, and i think it's in the works to be in a future version, please make sure you're running the latest recommended version of boinc

I double checked that I had changed my password by changing it again, I never got the failed email/password message but I did recieve unable to connect to project message.

thanks for this comment, not many people would agree lol, but understandably the servers and general system is more of a priority for the seti staff than the website content (but that'll be looked at in the future, to include all the science content from the classic site, also are you aware that most people here are just users like yourself? unless it says so on the left under their name (something like project developer, scientist, or administrator) they're just a normal user, but that's how things go here, experienced users helping new commers, and it works quite well, as the UCB team can get on with sorting the servers :)

i think this is a new problem i wasn't aware of (been checking the past few minutes) and i'm not able to connect as well as others in the number crunching forum, so i think this is a server problem (think the web server on the scheduler has died) so the only thing you can do is be patient and keep trying, maybe once a day or so, unfortunetly you can't automate the "attach" process, and it won't work till the problem is fixed, but everyone's in the same boat here

Thanks for looking into this bit (via another method) I shall give it another go in a few hours, this could be due to the deadline of SETI I wonder.

you're welcome. glad to hear that you're one of the "i want to keep trying" users and not in the "this is crap" camp. keep trying and be patient, things will be resolved, for more info on seti's situation and the big picture have a read of matt's "facts of life" post

this could be due to the deadline of SETI I wonder.
well, pretty much all the classic users moved to boinc shortly after the "we're moving" email was sent out, and i think this is the cause of the current server load issues (but nothing could have been done before this, because to test the system, you need a load to test with, the classic users provide the load)
to see the stampede of classic users have a look at the graphs on www.boincstats.com - thousands of users joining each day has gotta take it's toll, all "adding" to the issue

yes, it's only a seti problem, (but then seti does have more users than all the other projects added together)
other projects will be unnaffected, as each project is completely seperate, each running on their own server(s)
