Message 212530 - Posted: 13 Dec 2005, 5:51:26 UTC - in response to Message 210447.

I currently have 37 completed work units to upload. Iam able to download work units.-- I am getting the following error messages re:uploads (1)"Can't resolve host name {setiboinic data.sslberkeley.edu}valid name,no data record of requested type" (2)URL http://setibonicdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cig/file_upload_handler::error-113 Is anyone else getting the same error? Does anyone know how to solve the problem? Thanks for any help!

David, there is something strange about the URLs. Neither are correct - the first has a blank and a missing '.', the second is not spelled correctly. The right URL is 'setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu'. I am not sure how to fix it since I don't know where this information is kept. A brute force method would be to detach/reattach the project, although that will delete any workunits. It might be better to wait until the servers catchh up and see if the problem goes away.

Norbert, Thank you for your advise. The incorrect spelling was no fault (Ishould use spell check on everything) any how I took your advise and just waited. Now I am getting uploads and new work units. I appreciate your help!

To Whom It May Concern

There are two major gripes, and I think that anyone outside of the USA is being given the bum's rush.

Not only was I stuck on not getting any results uploaded or downloaded for about two weeks, I now find myself with nearly 50 results pending and my time for those results being recognised running out.

I have contact with others in Europe who have a similar problem.

I do not know how many successfully returned results have been dumped in the mean time, but a quick check of the history will show that I return well over 200+ credits per day and I have had bupkis for the past weeks.

I was also shafted for about 400 odd classic SETI results, because I decided that it would be better to continue on the old system, until the load (and the bugs) could be worked out of the new one.

More shafted me.

If you do not want non USA contributors, then please carry on as per the current policy.

Not only do I begrudge the connect time, I also begrudge the cost in electricity for keeping the connection going (my computer) for what was essentially getting screwed around.

Not amused

I will however make a vague guess as to how this disastrous situation has come about.

There are some guys (WHO ARE NO LONGER LISTENED TO) WHO PIONEERED THE ORIGINAL "SETI@hOME" AND THEY ARE BEING SYSTEMATICALLY PISSED OFF, and the prats that "replaced" them are trying now to work out how to not destroy the goodwill of the trust that was originally built up by the original seti@home team.

I have worked in enterprise tech-support, with regard to storage, for far too long, that I do not know what is going on.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum (or rather, the fuckwits have finally found out that they do not have the cerebral competence to find the power -switch).

Seti@home classic could handle over 5 million users - no problem. BOINC has pissed off nearly everyone.

Let the guys that can do the job, just do the job. This is not a bandwagon; it is something that individuals are willing to devote time and energy to. If the current "team" cannot do so, then stand aside and let the team that could sort it out.

My trusting BOINC, at present is ZERO, simply because I have had experience, not once but literally hundreds of times of the incompetence of Yanks at an enterprise level - this includes the CIA (yes the agency - just mention HSM).

People seem to be expressing a lot of frustration about the inability to upload the results. I don't see what the issue is. The guys at SETI are working on it. Once they fix the problem the data units will upload. The only problem for us, the users, would be if disk space was getting critical.

If the SETI admins say be patient then I'll be patient. I'll keep processing and everything will upload whenever the problem is resolved. No worries.

I am not complaining about uploads, but I would like to get some work (downloads). I ended up on BOINC since that is the only way to continue running Seti (which I have run in the classic form and completed over 16,000 WU and 11.3 years of CPU time). I don't particulary have an interest in the "other" projects which run on BOINC - I just want to phone home ;-)

I really really agree with you that after all downloaded units its processed the only thought we have it's download a lot of more seti units to make the same. Upload units no matters than the performance that newest Seti BOINC pretty system can achieve as a "quid pro quo" exchange with our power, money, time, etc...(of course we are volunteers) and by the moment the acumulated experience gained with Classical Seti don't appear,...almost resolving relative known problem.

I agree with you too, that if you join to another BOINC projects,...as LHC, and stay at same situation, by different motivation,.....the result thats it; Really really i matter Seti how old classical user.

Why is this interface so difficult to use? granted my old one... (SETI) ran everytime my screen saver came on. Why is this one so difficult to work with? No uploads, no downloads, etc. I know I'm not a Physicist, but I want to help with this project. Why is it so hard to work with it?

Thank You.

I also can't upload or download and haven't had any work units for a week so I have re-installed the old Seti@Home software and continue with that as long as it lasts!

I am having a lot of trouble communicating with seti site. I use Norton Firewall and have boincmanager and boinc in the site list. At best, I have to turn off the firewall to have any communications at all. Any help on how to set up the firewall to permit seti to work. I am running ---.13.

Ralph, Go to Norton Internet Security, left click Personal Firewall. On the lower right left click Configure. This will bring up the screen with Tabs for Firewall, Programs, Networking etc. Click on the Programs Tab. This will bring up a list of all programs recognized by Norton. Check and see if BOINC Client and BOINC Manager For Windows are listed. if so grant Permit All internet access. If you do not see BOINC listed run Program Scan. This will bring up BOINC Programs. Be sure Internet Access is granted.
I hope this helps you.

Does anyone know a specific time window that has less traffic? I don't mind not being able to upload or get credits for the units I've finished (I'm just happy to help) but not being able to download work units is becoming very agrivating. I can only devote my computer to the unit analysis at night because I use CPU greedy programs all day for both school and work, and now I'm not being able to get units to work on during the night.

So, is there any specific time frame when I could download a few units so that my computer can spend all night processing them?

I have not been able to upload or download work for 2 days. I am on broadband in South Africa.

The servers seem to be up an running but communication simply does not happen. I have not changed settings and my Internet connections are working fine.

Please go to the Messages tab, copy the last 20 or so entries from there and paste them into a reply here. Before you do this, let BOINC run for a while without intervention, don't hit Update or anything so we can see just what BOINC is trying to do on its own. Thanks!

Hello, I had this problem for a few weeks but got it fixed by reading one of the other posts here. My problem seemed to be a "Black Hole Router" somewhere out in the net.

I went to this link... and down a page or so are a few methods to try. I did method #1 on all my 6 computers and it fixed them all. it is a simple regedit solution. takes a minute or so. I would do it even if it is not the solution now, it might prevent the problem from ever happening.

I just go to my "work" tab, highlight the "running" applications, toggle them to suspend, and then reboot BOINC.

Yes, it will download more work but it will also take your "ready to report" files also.

Then I go in and "resume" all the work units I toggled to suspend.

Cheers for the info. I was having the same problem - not uploading. I followed the link to the microsoft support site & used the instructions for 'Fixing or working around a black hole router'.
I'm not particularly a whizz on these things, but I managed it ok.
I did set a system restore point & also exported a full backup of the registry first - just in case I messed it all up.
I'm glad I read your post.
Cheers again.

The project was down for several hours today. They did a reconfiguation of the server closet. After an outage it can take a couple of hours before things calm down. Think of 700K-900K requests simutaneously.

It shows you downloaded a result today and should be crunching on it.

Give it a few, see what happens in another couple hours.
