I recently downloaded and installed Boinc. When the screensaver is activited, the graphic icon bounces around the screen with the message "BOINC is currently inactive". Is there a setting that I need to adjust before Boinc starts grinding the data? Willows |

I can only connect to upload at a wooping speed of .14kps! Totaly useless. Downloads are okay. And I also noticed that when I suspend an upload the work unit dissapears from the transfers list. Does that mean the results have been trashed? After years of using SETI BOINC is wasting far to much of my time getting it to work |

Does that mean the results have been trashed? After years of using SETI BOINC is wasting far to much of my time getting it to work you should not click on "abort transfer" in the transfers tab or, yes, your result will be trashed! You're more lucky than me: I can't even download any WU... |

This is so frustrating. Anything used to be so smooth with old Seti@Home. I am seriously considering to uninstall BOINC and go back to some useless screen saver. |

I recently downloaded and installed Boinc. When the screensaver is activited, the graphic icon bounces around the screen with the message "BOINC is currently inactive". Is there a setting that I need to adjust before Boinc starts grinding the data? Hi, I see boinc has given you two results to work on. If you look at the "work" tab, you should see them both. My quesion is what's in the "Status" column of each? If you go to the "projects" tab, and look at the setiathome text, the column to the right of that is "status" what does it say the status of seti is? tony |

Everyone is in the same boat, there are steps seti needs to take to be able to handle everyone, and one of them is to get the hardware from classic. Well to get the hardware you have to shut it down. We're all classic and boinc users going to have to tough it out for the next several weeks until all the hardware is reconfigured and moved. This particular outage should be over in few days. thanks for any support you can offer tony |

I have had nothing but trouble since I installed BOINC and attempted to continue with seti. Right now I have 2 units that have been uploading for about 15 hours and another that has been downloading for about the same amount of time. What is happening? |

I have had nothing but trouble since I installed BOINC and attempted to continue with seti. Right now I have 2 units that have been uploading for about 15 hours and another that has been downloading for about the same amount of time. A server went Down Sunday, Matt came in (ON Sunday) and thought he fixed it, then overniite it went down again. Monday they worked on it, and decided to take the back end services down to help speed up the recovery. On 15 november they had it scheduled to merge the classic data with boinc data (master science data base), it got pushed back due to software issues. Now since they were down anyway, they started the merge to kill two birds with one stone. THe upload/download servers are slowly catching up, but not in any significant way, the merge is still happening. Within a week they'll be changing the science app for a new more sensitive one that doubles the sensitivity of the search for ET. This new app takes 4 or more times that of the current app. This will reduce the load on the servers by a factor of 4 so if we double in numbers we'll still be at 1/2 the load we are. Make sense? see the front page news, and tech news, you have credit now, why not visit the "Number crunching fora" where much discussion and boinc bashing is going on. tony |

Was classic user, never any pr4oblems. Now can't seem to download or upload. If you really believe this, then either your memory is short, or your memory is selective, or you weren't paying attention. From SETI@Home Technical News Reports: May 13, 1999 The Windows and Mac versions of the client were put online today. This happened to coincide with a national TV news story, and immediately our FTP server was overwhelmed. We hastily borrowed several old Sparc IPCs and set them up as FTP servers, but this didn't solve the problem. May 22, 1999 Because of the unexpectedly large number of users, our server has become overloaded. Clients are unable to connect and get error messages. We're getting thousands of email messages every day about this. To reduce the CPU load on WS3 we have temporarily stopped running the Splitter. We have 31,415 work units on disk right now, and we'll issue these until we can start generating new ones. September 17, 1999 We've had server performance problems in the past week. Some of these have involved the UCB network, which is beyond our control. However, the continued increase in usage seems to be once again pushing the limits of our servers. There are two bottlenecks: the data server and the Informix server for the user database. The data server runs many (256 to 512) instances of our server program. It's on a machine that originally had 256 MB of RAM. This machine was thrashing (excessive paging); it took us a while to figure this out. We increased the RAM to 512 MB, and are ordering another 512 MB. Thrashing, however, is still a problem, and we eventually plan to upgrade this host to one with a memory capacity of 4 GB or more. September 25, 2000 Last night (Sunday, September 24th) and a few nights ago (Thursday, September 21st) we experienced two sudden server outages, both due to running out of swap space. Users were getting "Unknown Error #1" messages during these times. We are re-tuning the server now. March 5, 2001 Around 11:00 GMT (3:00am PST) on Tuesday, February 27, 2001, network fibers were broken, cutting off the entire Space Sciences Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley Labs from the internet. It turns out this was the work of vandals who cut the fiber in the process of gathering a bunch of expensive copper wire. Due to the difficulty in finding the break, and then repairing in the rain and mud (on a steep slope no less), the outage lasted over five days. The SETI@home website and data server were unaccessible for several days during the entire length of the outage. During this time we took the opportunity to take care of a few offline items, such as split our server equipment into two separate "data closets" - when put in one single closet, the equipment was heating up beyond spec. We came back on line on Saturday, March 3rd, and rather quickly recovered from the back log of clients trying to send results and get new workunits. We are operating normally now, though we are currently dropping a few connections a second, and are trying to determine why (possibly a disk mounting issue). Just a sample... MJ |

Does it not bother you that a good portion of results being returned to Classic Seti were total junk and useless? But hey, I guess it was running 'smoothly'. Founder of BOINC team Objectivists. Hi Tony: I have noticed I seem to have less of a problem in the early evening, CST, with uploads and downloads. Right now, I have 5 items in the SETI upload queue. I will let you know how things go this evening. I would encourage everyone whom believes in this project to exercise a Mother Teresa level of patience as there always will be unforseen bugs/problems when shifting from one system to another. And I thank you for your patience with those of us, including myself, that are somewhat less so in this. It truly is frustrating, for all variables in the equation, I am sure. |

Hi Tony: You're most welcome, If there's anything else I can do, let me know. Patience is tough to maintain. I have to step back, get away, and then return. I know the other volunteers feel the stress too. We are volunteers doing this because we care. If we didn't care we couldn't be here. I don't know of any of us who weren't Classic participants. It's most frustrating when you know you can help someone and they refuse the help, or can't be bothered to do things to help themselves...Oh well, we do what we can. tony |

We are all unfortunately in the same position, see Technical news. To which most of us aren;t wasting any more breath or typing moments and ask why you wanted to type such a message anyway when you could've disappeared quietly into the night? Or didn't you? Do you want help but are you too afraid to ask by yourself? |

I recently downloaded and installed Boinc. When the screensaver is activited, the graphic icon bounces around the screen with the message "BOINC is currently inactive". Is there a setting that I need to adjust before Boinc starts grinding the data? Maybe I was caught up in server problems because it is now working and is 42% complete. I do have another question, under the classic I had credit for over 115 units. It appears that the counter under Boinc is restarting at zero. Is this normal? My user name, Willows, appears on the screen so I believe I have linked properly with the classic history file. Thanks for your comments. Willows |

I leave SETI running all of the time - I now have a HUGE backlog of files to be uploaded - Is classic still available? Beginning to wonder what the point is - I have a loud voice and I am pretty sure that the little grey/green dudes could hear me if I shout out of my window (SAETI?). To be fair, this is truly a GREAT project. I will however be shutting down for a while... could someone email me once things improve? Thanks Andrew Signatures are a huge waste of bandwidth |
