Message 192832 - Posted: 24 Nov 2005, 0:55:47 UTC

I'm trying to move over to BOINC from the SETI client but find I cannot attach to the project. I enter the project URL (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu), hit "Use existing account", enter my email and password and hit next. After the "Communicating with project Please wait..." screen, I get "Failed to attach to project" with no messages from the server.
If I use my browser to get to the SETI home page and click on the special instructions for classic users, I enter my email address for the account and hit ok to get my account key. It says an email is sent but it never arrives (and yes, I've checked my spam folders).
The only thing I can think of is that when BOINC first came out I switched to it, found it too buggy (on Windows) so I uninstalled it. (My original subscription email was destroyed during an Exchange server crash.) Maybe previously switching is causing a problem?
Anyway, I would hate to lose my stats, having been a member since 1999. Anyone got any ideas?

The password in the attach wizard in Boinc Manager is set here. You set it yourself. It's not any old password.

You can get your original 32 character authenticator key from this link.

Using BOINC Manager 5.2.6, I enter the project URL (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu), hit "Use existing account", enter my email and password and hit next. After the "Communicating with project Please wait..." screen, I get "Failed to attach to project" with no messages from the server. This has happened over 1 week on different Windows XP computers. Is it beacuse the computers are all networked sharing 1 internet consection? I am able to attach to einsteina and predictor at home, why not seti at home?

It's possible, though I'm not convinced it's your local network that's the problem. Recently I've seen some folk from New Zealand have connection problems similar to this that were solved by using a public proxy to connect. Here is that thread. It may be worth a try to see if that's your problem.

Thanks for these links. I can't understand why it wasn't easier to find these links from the home or my account pages, but there you go.

Still, after receiving my email I still can't connect. Using my email and password, or the account key in the password field itself produces the same "Can't attach" error.

However, putting my email as well as the account key in the password gives me an "Account not found - Check the email and password and try again" error.

I'm going to try tracing to see if it's a problem with our corporate firewall. Does BOINC use any specific ports that need to be unblocked?

I'm getting ping times of about 238 so that seems fine.

Here's what appears in the messages list after the attach attempt fails.

I'd guess that you can't attach because it's timing out due to the high traffic loads still happening. If so, patience is the best way to go.

BOINC uses ports 1043 and 31416 to communicate.

Set your password to something you can remember - this web site - your account. Then try attaching using that password. Some users do not get their authenticator set as their default password.
