A case of "if I can't get WUs, no one can?" Or just the usual dweebs happened to hit SAH this time.

Well I just got 2 work units! yay! But from the news posting it looks to me as if there are a few script kiddiez at work. Does everyone have the latest security patches installed? If not, YOUR computer could be participating in such attacks without your knowlege!

Locked up as tight as Ft. Knox here (I hope anyway). I do it mostly for privacy issues, but since I'm paranoid about my financial info it assures that the rest stays out as mine stays in.

You know they are expecting a big worm or other such attack to show it's ugly face August 13. I don't have the link to the articles I read about this, but it's supposed to be worse than MyDoom.

What type of logic would prompt an attack on SAH?
If they find E.T. then that proves God doesn’t exist so I'll prevent them from doing work instead of relying on my beliefs?
SAH is SO high profile, and their network so stable, (cough, cough) I can brag about bringing them down with a DoS attack?
Or is it just somthing as petty as D. Drake theorized..
One can only wonder at the lunacy that abounds.

I'm not religious, but finding ETI would not prove that God does or doesn't exist. I don't know why people have to boil so much down to religion. There is no way (nor will there ever be) a way to prove or disprove the existance. You either believe, or you don't.

That aside, I agree. Who would attack SAH? Especially when it's down anyway. That's pretty lame.

The kind of kids who would vandalize their own school in their own neighborhood.
Their actions apparently do not take logic into account.

I would have to agree with drinking12many. I suspect it was thousands of WU hungy workstations looking for work. Just my 2 cents.

I had the same thought, the so-called DOS might have been me and a few thousand other participants trying to download work. It makes no sense that a hacker would launch a DOS attack on a site that says on it's homepage that it is down.

Indeed. I went further than that and put my network behind a Cisco PIX firewall appliance. Lesson #1: Trust NO ONE!!!

From the main page:

******
The bad news is that the transitioner is still way behind and so the project will probably run out of send-able work as early as 04:00 UT tomorrow.
******

I think it took a lot less time than that....

The world wasn't coming to an end. The attack was noted and a tweak to the server firewall by one of the Devs did the trick. Probably some script kiddie getting his jollies. Much ado about nothing, this time.

I think that those 400k prepared went out already. It is producing new WU but not so fast as demand is.
