You don't Download by the Type of CPU you have but by the Operating System you have ... Looks like you need the Windows Version of what Version Client you want ...

Like I confessed....I'm cluless today.

Alright there are about 80 versions in there. Which 5.x version do i need ?

This link may help better.

Thanks all. I found it.

5.2.1 up and running. No problems. It pasted right over m other work also without a problem.

Now I get to go and play with all of these new bells and whistles. Let's see what kind of new stuff is in there....

Looks like they incorporated some features similar to boincview...

I wish LHC@home would hurry up and patch their servers as they're about the only project still demanding V4 clients for new work.

Woo Hoo! v5.2.1 ROCKS!!!! I love the "New and Improved" Transfers tab. Got a list to up/download? Click the first one, click "Retry now" and it automatically does the whole list. That is a BITCHIN' improvement.... Gotta see what else is improved.... Oh, and it retained my WUs from v4.45, working on them as I type. >:-) (-:<

This link should help explain the manager function.

[edit] the manager will let you put your password in instead of your account key. Make it alittle easier.. Dont forget to go to your account and create passwords...

Robert asked about it and I decided to give it the guinea pig test. That's how I found out what it is. There's a link in my reply to Robert and then a link on that page with more info. >:-) (-:<

I agree there's a number of improvements in the 5.x series. I'm running a v5.3.1 based on the 2005-10-14 cvs source snapshot. The estimated time to completion adjustments seem to be working pretty well. The account wizards work pretty well. I can compile the boincmgr and it looks pretty good. The only major problem I've observed is the drop in benchmark results for linux users. I posted in another thread where the problem is but so far it has't been addressed.

I'm currently running 5.2.1 on 7 systems and it's working great. No bugs noticed so far. But it's some of the less-noticable things that make the biggest difference. For example, it adjusts your "estimated time to completion" based on past work. My 2.4ghz P4 averages about 4.5 hours per Seti WU (unoptimized), yet it benchmarks at 6.5 hours per WU. Boinc v5 has been gradually reducing the ETC to more closely match the real WU time. It's down to 5 hours ETC and still dropping. This is nice!

i've noticed a change in ETC numbers too...running on a 2.93 ghz celeron D...mine used to read 5.5 hours...when the actual time of completion was 3.5 hours...now the ETC reads 4 hours 11 minutes.

This is nice, but how will it deal with the new client that Seti is going to put out which will cause the wu's to be much, much longer to process. Will it think that it still takes only 4 hours to complete? This could cause 7 times more work to be downloaded than can be accomplished till it readjusts upward.

tekwyzrd, in another thread you mentioned this on Oct. 11:
boincmgr still loses text when switching between menus and selecting menu actions.

...is that fixed in the latest builds? I haven't seen it in action, so I don't know how it looks like or or what causes it. Is it only cosmetic?

No, that's still present with the boincmgr provided by berkeley (official v5.2.1). Additionally, a second click doesn't close a menu created when clicking on Files, Commands, Options, etc. This is the same as the behavior I observed with v4.43. The loss of text is annoying but the text is there again if you select another tab then go back to the tab you had selected or if you minimize then select boincmgr again.
I'll make my locally compiled versions available for linux users once the final version is released. The menus close on a second click as they should and there's no loss of text on the versions I've compiled.
I couldn't get the boincmgr to compile until I installed wxGTK-compat. It seems that boincmgr is dependent on the wxGTK-compat package for compiling here but the result is a major improvment over the standard version. The scroll bars, tabs, menus, etc. are all consistent with the appearance of other programs in KDE (including gnome apps thanks to gtk-qt). The only inconsistency is that some tabs don't have the white background (I still have to figure out how to fix this).

[edit] As to the web related buttons, KDE stores the browser selection info in /home/username/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals (BrowserApplication=). If boinc could be told to look here for the browser info the buttons would probably work for KDE users. [/edit]

What about the benchmark with dual core and/or HT enabled systems?
Until 4.72 (which I'm currently running) the benchmark is way too low.
If HT is idsabled it gets much more.

Is this fixed?

Andy

No,

But I am finalizing a proposal that i think FINALLY addresses everyones issues with regard to the benchmarks. And if I cannot get help, well, I will take the time off from Wiki-ing and do it myself ... if nothing else to prove that it will work ...

Of course, like all I do, it is as complete as I can make it ... so the last time I printed it for editing it was 9 pages long ... but, for all of that, I don't think that the programming effort will be all that large. It is really a pretty simple extension of the existing mechinisms we already have ...

Paul,

Go "Open Source" and post a link to it, warts 'n' all and get some feedback.

You never know, there may be a group of people out on the ether eager to help.

Martin
