Message 177703 - Posted: 13 Oct 2005, 19:28:25 UTC - in response to Message 177691.

Boy and I glad for the failure. Yes, that's right, glad. These boards have been getting pretty boring with all that functionality we've been enjoying.

I think some(most) people are posting their problems not so much as complaints, but more to let people know the problem is WIDE spread and not the fault of someones own software or hardware. It might also be that some new posters finally feel they have something to contribute of worth. I mean when it comes to helping others, we regulars jump right on the questions. Newer members may be dying to help. Some of those might be afraid to try to help others because they see the way we jump on eachother and don't feel comfortable about making a mistake. I like to see people correct me, because it means:

1) the end user is sure that he's getting correct answers

2) I get to learn

I haven't seen anyone correct me that didn't have the best of intentions.

tony

There's a corollary here, which is everyone has something to contribute, as well as the only really dumb question or hypothesis is the one that doesn't get asked or put forth (within limits). ;-)

Message 177705 - Posted: 13 Oct 2005, 19:34:34 UTC - in response to Message 177698.

All the servers are running, but ping or tracert doesn't reach. Weird, eh?
Its been 24 hours now since I've uploaded my last result. I can still download though. And I now have 9 results waiting. Is about 350 credits per day good enough for a Pentium M 1.6 GHz on WinXP SP2 512 MB DDR-RAM?
Thanks

Hi. I just wanna say hi to you as you are first Indian I have met here. Also I would like to say how saddened I am at what has happened up in the NW of India with all those poor souls losing their lives in that disater. I wish all those who lost their lives a happy resting place and I hope that the survivors hang on there and come through OK. Regards from Great Britain.

I have just noticed an increase in traffic according to the cricket graghs. This could be a sign that things are about to improve.

Well it looks like I may be right, my transfer tab is now clearing

I too am unable to get a reliable connection, up or down.

I am in the UK, on Tiscali.

A few went up, and some came down. about 50% failed to upload, and about the same % failed to download.

I have given up, and disabled net access. Will try again when I get out of bed 2mora.

One PC has a CPDN WU to do. It won't run out this year.

The other will get E@H when it runs out. E@H already has a LTD that means E@H will not get work any time this decade unless it has no S@H to do.

Bed time. Not worried.

All will work out in the end. Night all.

Sleep well, from the UK.

Foamy is "Lord and Master".
(Oh, + some Classic WUs too.)

Well thats the sign I have been looking for. As the Results Waiting to be sent has DECREASED, the WU's in progress keeps climbing. Which means that people can or are downloading and most people cannot upload. I too have e-mailed Berkley 2 times in the past 12+ hours. Still no response.

So that is what is clogging there email system?

v5 haven't a better chance to get a connection, but when you at last have started a download it does not error-out if download for any reason stops.

v4.45 and v4.7x on the other hand will error-out any started downloads that is stopped for any reason, like server dropping out, you're disabling network or shutting down BOINC/computer, or your dialup-connection craps out...

It seems due to the result of ALL data being transfered from SETI@home classic to BOINC that data is taking a slow, in fact VERY slow time to upload and download HOWEVER, even though you may have 5 or more WU's waiting to upload it is likley it would take quite a few tries and a little bit more time but they seem to upload eventually. Refer to the Technical News area of the site for the latest. It does state they are transferring the Classic data. So unfortunately all we can do is wait until that data gets transferred. They also say its likey nothing is broken. Just possibly overloaded with work. Sorry so much writing guys :)

Since nothing has happened and all people overlook my post for the the main cause, i post my same message again, since the situation hasn't changed a single bit :(((( :

The usual (and often criticised by me) double connection bullsh*t is happening again :P
You can monitor this, if you use a local proxy, that shows a realtime log. First upload attempt is a post with 236 (first time) or 238-239 (every further attempt) bytes. At the moment this first attempt has a chance of about 32% to get a positive response. After the positive response the BOINC manager makes a second connect attempt to actually upload the crunch result. Size varies from unit to unit. If you are lucky enough to get thru on the first, you can be pretty dam'ned sure, that the second will fail. I see absolutely no use in this, except to double the neccessary load. But as usual, noone will be listening and instead i will be bashed and minused for mentioning inconvenient things :/

BTW: This happens only, and really only @Seti, other projects seem not to need this plain BS...

Actually, I think its more do to data transfer. Most of my friends use the SETI Classic and have been getting slower analyzing rates. Berklry has been in the process of shutting classic down for a while now and only recently (past few days) have started to transfer data to BOINC. hence in an earlier thread reply (i forget who) said it was traffic. Well it is, kinda. More like data traffic than computer traffic. Everything everythwere is trying to be transferred, uploaded, downloaded, and saced etc. That slows down everything dramatically.

Yeah.. the upload/download server has been dropping connections since we came back on after the database backup outages yesterday. The servers are actually catching up but at an alarmingly slow rate. Obviously we hit a new bottleneck somewhere. Jeff's looking into it. I'm busy with a grant proposal (hence the lack of feedback lately).
