I'm a big fan of SETI, and while I get the beauty of the BOINC infrastructure is that one can run fifteen different projects at once, I'd prefer to stick with SETI whenever possible.

That said, I know there's times when there's no work available for SETI, at which point I don't mind working for other projects. Is there any way to set a different BOINC project to only work when it can't get work from SETI?

Thanks!

Not exactly, but try with a workaround.

Go to your account, then edit your seti@home preferences. Set the resource share to a high number, let's say 23.
Then go to the homepage of the other project and do the same there, but with a low resource share of, say 1.

BOINC will now crunch Seti 23 hrs a day and the other project 1 hr a day.

If ever there will be a longer outage of Seti (as was in Aug/Sep) BOINC will crunch the other project. This will have the consequence that its long term debt increases to an amount that it will not download WUs of the other project any more for a long time once Seti is back.

Don't bother about a very small resource share of the other project. BOINC will see if one time or another the share is too low for finishing within the deadline with the given share. It will then go into panic mode until the WU is finished in time.

I did the above on one of my machines in August and ATM it is crunching Seti exclusively. Eventually it will download and crunch one WU of the other project and then return to Seti.

Like Barbarossa I adjust the Resource Share for the different projects to create backup projects. Seti, my primary project is set at 100%, the other two projects are set to 0.0000001%. Set like this the backup projects will only run when there is no work from Seti so you are not wasting any crunch time when Seti is up and running. I have had it set up like this for some time and it works fine.

I had not yet studied this Wiki page. The more I'm happy that I came to the somewhat same conclusions as Paul.
