Message 170374 - Posted: 21 Sep 2005, 14:08:16 UTC

For several weeks, no work units have uploaded or downloaded. What is the problem? I get messages "defering communication with project for..." and "temporatily filed upload of ..." and "backing off ...". What is the problem? I'm on BOINC 4.25. How do I fix it? I have a Dell 4300 series running Windows XP home version 2002 service pack 2.

First, you should
- download v4.45
- uninstall the current version (and do NOT delete the remaining files)
- install v4.45 into the existing directory
- start again

Secondly there was a problem with the Seti@home scheduler, but has been (partially?) fixed yesterday. Just test it out.

How do I uninstall 4.25, my current version?

How do I uninstall 4.25, my current version?

Move to menu Start > Settings > Control center > Software, then select BOINC in the list and finally click on uninstall.

Partially fixed. It uploaded the 3 tasks that were waiting. But it still won't download new work units. I'm getting the message "Remote control not allowed, using loopback address" then "insufficient work, requesting more" then "Defering communication with project 1 week, 6 days, 11 hours, 15 minutes, and 32 seconds". How do I fix this, or is there a problem with the server?

You didn't mention seeing a message like this one:
9/25/2005 7:18:13 PM|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
Which leads me to think that BOINC is still deferring your communication. To override this, go to the Project tab, select SETI@Home and click on the update button. This should initiate the contact with the server.

Now, I get messages "request_reschedule_cpus: project op" then "Master file fetch failed" then "Defering communication with project for 1 day 0 hours 41 minutes and 49 seconds". It's still defering, but for a much shorter time period.

- You did allow both Boinc.exe and Boinc,gr.exe passage through your firewall, when it asked?
- The computer is online when Boinc tries to communicate with home base?
- If you look in the Projects tab in Boinc Manager and you select the Seti@Home project, which buttons do you see on the left under Tasks?

I don't have a firewall.

Yes, I'm online

on Boinc Mngr, Projects tba, under tasks, there are 6 buttons, none gray'ed out: undate, suspend, no new work, reset project, detatch , attach to new project.

Unless you disabled it, Windows XP Home SP2, installed a firewall. Make sure BOINC.EXE and BOINCMGR.EXE can pass thru it.

You will find the 'Windows Firewall' in the 'control panel'

When I say "I'm online", I mean that I have dial-up. When I first power up my PC, it's not online; I haveto dial in. That usually takes a minute or so. I notice that the first error messages about not connection with the host occur before I connect up. Is there some option for not starting BOINC until I'm ready?

Well, yes. Either you rightclick on the Boinc icon and choose Network activity suspended. This means it will not try to contact home base, but still run your work units even while you aren't online. Do make sure you set it back to Network connection always available/by preferences, when you have a connection and want to upload/download/report work.

Or you make sure Boinc doesn't start up when Windows starts up by taking the Boinc manager shortcut out of your Start->Programs->Startup folder;
You then just start up Boinc when you are ready. Make a shortcut on your desktop.

I waited until the previous "defering for. . . ." had expired. Then I dialed up my internet connection and brought up BONIC. It STILL said "Insufficient work. . ." then "master file fetch failed. . ." then "defering communication with project for. . . ." What is the problem?

Could you copy and paste the actual entries from the messages tab? There are codes in those lines that may help us figure this out.

Ok, try this process:

  • Go online
  • In BOINC Manager, the Projects tab, select SETI@Home and click on the Reset Project button.
  • Check the entries on the Messages tab. If it doesn't download work after resetting, copy and paste the messages after the reset and paste them here.

I don't see anything that indicated that it even tried to get to the server...
Under the File menu, is there a check mark next to "Disable BOINC Network Access"? If there is, make sure you're on line, clear the check mark, and if it doesn't start to do anything on its own, on the Projects tab select SETI@Home and click on the Update button. Let us see what entries go on the Messages tab after those actions.

It wasn't checked. I did the UPDATE and it said it was defering a couple of days. I did a reset and then it said it was defering over a week.
