Ned et al I find it interesting in, a small percentage of the impending flood of incoming WU's has been slightly bled off.. So there appears to be a cyclic throttling of processes to the point the major filesystem issue is being controlled, to prevent a new issue... While no one has said, I should almost expect the scheduler to allow a group of the 900,xxx+ completed waiting WU's come in and then cycle through... Process, then allow the next group in... Yes this could be manpower intensive (or cyclic cron jobs)... Yup -- I consider 'recovery is complete' when 'everything is back to normal'. You don't. No big deal, just a matter of doing some translation. The only other thing would be the discrepency of "granted credit" as the scheduler/validater grants/files credit and the time delay... BOINCStats is showing fairly large descrepncies... Thanks to Matt and others that are monitoring... R/ Al Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

I would like to see folks thinking in terms of a bigger picture. I'm not IT, but work closely with IT on frequent occasions (investigations) and know that there is a lot more complexity then is apparent to the average user. I appreciate intelligent discussion around possible solutions, but grow weary of "do it now" statements, or assumptions from people who have not considered the variables involved. Please bear in mind that quite a few people who frequent these forums are not only highly IT literate but many, like myself, actually work in the real world designing, maintaining and analysing servers with heavy usage and file loadings. Whilst we may not actually work in the distributed computing environment, a lot of the server side variables apply equally to other systems that perform the same functions all be it as part of a different application. Many systems engineers work on systems that require uploads and downloads of user files, the generation of more files in these areas by other process and have valid experience and knowledge to pass opinion based on sound reasoning rather than just saying no do not do this. However I agree that the devteam do not look to the forums for advice, however that does not mean that people with knowledge, experience and the ability to see all the variables should never say anything. Sarah, Have you not seen Rom Walton, JM7, or Matt L post on these boards? They are all on the dev team in one capacity or another. Rom used to work for Microsoft (and if I remember right he helped develop some of the OS's that MS has or had on the market). So, the Dev team does read these forums, at least on occasion. |

Ned et al Ok.. I wanna know what was wrong with this post that he had a -5 rating. I know Pappa isn't always one of the most popular nor one of the most positive people on these boards, but this post in particular seemed to me to be very factual and positive. He offered a forecast of what he thought might happen. The forcast was neither positive nor negative towards seti / boinc but to me seemed to be a very fair forecast based upon the trends of the past few hours / days. Anyway, Pappa, I gave you a + for your post. |

Ned et al Who knows Jim, who knows. People responding to others post's on these boards, either via the rating system or just by passing comment is an entire mystery to me. I am slowly coming to the view that there are a lot of people out there with low self esteem that don't get out much, who use these boards to abuse and belittle others in an attempt to inflate their own ego. |

Sounds like a good reason for removing post ratings. A good idea at one time, but the rating system has since lost its usefulness and probably does more harm than good these days.
