You know who you are. You are long-time SETI Classic users who suddenly are faced with SETI BOINC. Yeah, its different Most people hate change, and most people outright fear that what they don't understand. With respect to the latter: establish a connection to your ISP, and then open your browser, launch BOINC Manager, and then press the F1 key. Toggle back to your browser and READ! If you don't know what's on that page, then you have NO right whatsoever to complain whatsoever (and I don't care what the problem is). Now if something doesn't seem to be working the way you see it described on the F1 browser-displayed page, then you have EVERY right to bitch (and I'll second your motion to keel-haul the developers). But not until then. I'm not arguing that there's not room for improvement in BOINC Manager v4.45, but in all actuallity BOINC Manager (v4.45) is so intuitive, that if somebody is famaliar with the F1 browser-page, we'll see more posts about what is really wrong with BOINC (as input for development). The vastness of computer variability (especially with respect to firewalls, proxy, servers, anti-virus, hardware, et ali) is so mind boggglingly complex there's no such thing as a "one size fits all." Maybe a lot of you believe the computer should read your mind to know what you want and just make it so. Excuse me, but I don't want ANY machine to have the ability to read my mind. Thank you VERY much. There's no WAY WHATSOEVER I desire a VCR to tune into a TV show it thinks I should be desiring to watch. Yes we are in a transition period, and people are coming on line. This rant is posted precisely for their benefit. I believe that people need to begin to take responsibility for their own systems, configuration, and what not. Thank you very much for tolerating my rant. Man - I speak in a global sense - has the goal of going to Mars soon. Today it appears we can't can't even get off of the ground because the cause of some balky sensor's readings can't be discerned. I believe it would be of immense help if all parties concerned would just pitch a great big bitch, and quit (throw all their tools off of the gantry and walk away). I'm certain that each and every one of us will feel so much better afterwards. |

So that's how you get the stupid F1 help to function!! I've been in the computer industry for years - BOINC is down-right elusive software. Imagine what regular users are going through trying to figure it out. Lighten up. |
